LT CAPACITORS

LOW TENSION (FIXED) SHUNT CAPACITORS INTENDED FOR POWER FACTOR IMPROVEMENT

1. SCOPE This specification covers design manufacture, testing and supply of 440V, 3 phase delta connected 50 cycles, outdoor, self healing type LT fixed shunt capacitor unit intended for power factor improvement to be installed on LT side of distribution transformers of ratings 63 & 100 KVA 2. LT FIXED CAPACITORS Capacitor units shall comply with ISS:2834/1986 & ISS:13340/1993 (with latest version/amendments). The material shall be ISI marked. The capacitor elements used in units shall have mixed dielectric and impregnated with a impregnate which has been completely refinished & degasified so as not to have any deterioration of the dielectric material. The impregnate used shall have high dielectric constant, low viscosity & high chemical stability. The impregnate should be NPCB(Nonpolychlorinated biphenyl) and should be non oxidizing and specially suitable for capacitor or alternatively capacitor elements used in the units shall be MPP thoroughly dried casted in high quality epoxy resin of very high dielectric constant. 3. RATED VOLTAGE The rated voltage shall be 440 V with fluctuation in supply voltage as specified in ISS 585/1962 & IS:12360/19851 (with latest amendment) shall not effect the normal working of the equipment with the provision that rated output of the capacitor unit at 415 V will remain 3 KVAR. 4. PERMISSIBLE OVER LOADS The permissible overloads shall not exceed any one the limits given in 4(i) & (ii) below confirming to ISS:2834/1986 & Clause-6 of ISS:13340/1993. i) VOLTAGE: Capacitor shall be suitable for prolonged operation at r.m.s. voltage between terminals not exceeding 1.10 times the rated voltage. ii) CURRENT: Capacitors shall be suitable for continuous operation at r.m.s. line current of 1.30 times the current that occurs at rated sinusoidal voltage & rated frequency, excluding transients.

5. CONSTRUCTION These capacitors should be single-phase 3 KVAR individual unit for 9 KVAR and 18 KVAR banks delta connected to form three phase bank. These individual units should be clamped and housed in metal container made of 1mm thick CRCA sheet with proper ventilation and with front-hinged door to enable their easy maintenance and replacement in case of damage of any unit. Only 3 terminals shall be brought out to the individual kit Kat fuse of suitable ratings, which are clamped under the container on the back sheet of the box with provision for cable entry. Joints shall be suitably welded. The out side of the container should have smooth and tidy look and should be coated with weather proof and corrosion resistant paint of dark admiral grey shade. There should be proper provision for clamping the container (housing the capacitor) on to the transformer pole. Proper glands where ever necessary should be provided. The above said arrangement shall be as per drawings (enclosed) for each rating of capacitors. 6. RATING PLATES A rating plate shall be provided on each unit in accordance with ISS:2834/1986 & ISS: 13340/1993 (with latest amendments) 7. SAFETY REQUIREMENT

i. ii. iii.

Capacitor units shall be provided with directly connected discharge device as per ISS: 13340/1993 (with latest amendments) The discharge device shall reduce the residual voltage from the crest value of the rated voltage to 50 V or less within one minute after the capacitor is disconnected from the source of supply. Earth connection. The capacitor container shall be provided with a suitable earth terminal clearly marked as _|_. It should be 2 suitable to take up a lug suitable for 10 mm conductor with a bolt hole dia of 10 mm.

iv.

Other safety requirements Capacitor shall comply with the general safety regulations for power installation as per IE Rules 1956.

8. FUSES Each individual capacitor within the capacitor unit should be protected with an individual tinned copper fuse. Kit kats of suitable rated shall also be provided at proper place conforming to ISS: 2086/1993 (with latest amendments) 9. TESTS AND INSPECTION i) Type test: The tests indicated in clause 10.1 of IS 2834/1986 & clause 12.2 of ISS:13340/1993 with latest amendments shall constitute the type test. The certificates of type tests already not carried out (not more than two years old) by the tenderer in their lab or from any Govt. recognized test house on a capacitor unit identical in all respects being quoted against this specification must be furnished by the manufacturer along with this quotation as an evidence of compliance of this specification. In case the tender is not accompanied by the type test certificate, board/power utility reserves the right of cancel/reject the tender. Note : The purchaser reserves the right to get these tests carried out from recognized test house/or in the lab of tenderer. However capacitor loss / tan delta or any type test can be got checked on one sample per 100 unit of capacitors of each rating of offered lot at the cost of supplier from any recognized laboratory/government test house. In

such case inspecting officer will seal the selected samples taken out of the lot & witness the type tests. ii) Routine test All capacitor units shall be subjected to the routine test at the manufacturers works in accordance with IS:2834/1986 and IS:13340/1993 with latest amendments. The routine test certificate shall be submitted along with the call for inspection material by the manufacturer/supplier. Alternatively these shall be handed over to the inspecting officer during inspection. iii) Acceptance tests The inspecting officer will carry out the acceptance tests as per clause 10.3 of IS:2834/1986 and clause 12.3 of IS:13340/1993 with latest amendments. All the tests and inspection shall made at the place of manufacturer unless other wise especially agreed upon of by the manufacturer and the purchaser at the time of purchases. The manufacturer shall offer this inspector representing the purchaser all reasonable facilities, without charge, to satisfy him that material is being supplied in accordance with the specification. The purchaser has the right to get the test carried out (at suppliers cost) by an independent agency whenever there is dispute regarding the quality of supply.
