E. Edgar Allan Poe: A Study of the Short Fiction. Boston: Twayne, 1991. Print. This book is all about the short stories that Edgar Allan Poe wrote in the span of his lifetime. It provides an analysis and overview of the story and the main points surrounding it. May looks at the stories from an unorthodox perspective and reflects on the thoughts conveyed through Poes stories. The entirety of the book covers a multitude of Poes stories but only the section on The Cask will be used. This source is the only full book used for this research paper. The source is credible, as it is published by a well-known publisher. This same publisher also produced critical analyses of multiple different types of literature. This source is objective and it will provide a great, new perspective on Poes short story and give fresh ideas on how to approach the analysis of stories from Poe. This book is a great source for people, like me, that are new to Poes style of writing and the dark themes within his stories. Moss, Joyce, and George Wilson. It discusses why Poe chose the carnival season to set the short story in and the significance surrounding this choice. It also goes into great detail about the story and keys in on major events in the plot and significant phrases and lines spoken within the plot. The article discusses why the story is set up so perfectly and what makes the story so intriguing and appealing to the reader in regards to the themes covered within the story. This source can be counted as credible because it is considered to be a scholarly source, because of its publication in an academic journal. The article appears to be completely objective and aims to break down the setting and plot of the short story so that the reader can better understand them. It also analyzes the time period in history that this story was written and gives the reader a basis to build off of when considering the world that Poe lived in while he wrote this story. In comparison to the other sources, this source stands out because of its accurate historical information. Mullen, Jean S. The Cask of Amontillado. It provides multiple different in-depth ways to consider all aspects of the story. It also provides historical information about the time period in which The Cask of Amontillado was written and published. Furthermore, it gives different possibilities for what the thoughts of Poe could have been when he first considered this story and then when he actually decided to write the story. This excerpt from Outsiders is very credible and wholly unbiased. This source stands out as the best of all the sources for this essay because of its over and above nature in relaying the

It is very simple in its explanation of the short story because it is written at a level where an immigrant could understand exactly what is happening within the short story. The story comes from an anthology of many different stories and poems that includes different ways to analyze those works of literature, as well. In regards to The Cask of Amontillado, it gives little information on Edgar Allan Poe himself but does give different ways to approach the analysis of the story and provides ways for the reader to go about using those analyses in relation to the story. The anthology also gives the reader questions to ponder as he rereads the story to gather more in-depth information to provide a more fluent analysis of the short story. Without this source, the analysis of Poes short story would become increasingly difficult because this source provides such great angles of approach to the reading and interpreting of the short story itself. In comparison to the other sources, this one is the one with the least amount of depth into the author himself because of the nature of this book. Because it is an anthology and includes many other works by many other authors, it lacks depth into the insight of those authors but covers a widespread variety of authors. This source is completely objective as it only aims to give information to the reader and not sway the readers opinion of the story or the authors within it. It is published by a company who is fully credible as they produce college level textbooks. The

It breaks down some symbolism used within the story and relates those symbols back to historical information about the time period in which Edgar Allan Poe lived. These details can be used to help with the characterization analysis of the story and how to properly view the way that those characters within the story are portrayed. Even though this is the shortest of all the sources listed, it will potentially be one of the most helpful. This article is somewhat credible as it comes from being published in an online database. With this kind of source, one must be very careful to discern fact from opinion in these articles. The goal of this source is to simply decode some of the symbolism with Poes short story. This source is going to be useful for, specifically, the characterization portion of this essay as it explains some of the objects and traits linked to each character.
