Regroup Tens

2.NBT.7 Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds. How can I subtract three digit numbers? 1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4 Model with mathematics. 5 Use appropriate tools strategically. 6 Attend to precision. 8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Introduction: When subtracting with three-digit numbers, subtract the ones, the tens, and then the hundreds. If there are not enough ones to subtract from, regroup 1 ten as 10 ones. You can use base-ten blocks to help you regroup and find the difference. This investigation emphasizes mathematical reasoning and mathematical processes. Materials: base-ten blocks Have 12 students come to the front of the class. Separate them into a line of 10 and a line of 2. Point out that the number 12 is composed of 1 ten and 2 ones. Students may model this formation at their desks with base-ten blocks. Tell students you want to subtract 4 students from the front. Point out that there are only 2 students in the ones line. Say that you will regroup the 12 students so you can subtract 4. Move the students in the tens line into line behind the 2 in the ones line. Then have 4 students sit down. How many are left? 8 Have the students left in front count off to show that there are 8 students left. Conclusion: Assign homework after successful completion of the lesson. Students who understand the concepts may skip the Homework Helper section. Place Value Models, Base ten blocks, reteach worksheet, enrich worksheet 1. Smartboard 2. Netbooks: For small group and center time, students will use netbooks to find different subtraction and addition games on the classroom Symbaloo Page. The students will also use scootpad and mobymax on the netbooks to practice addition and subtraction facts during small group and center time. With these apps the teacher will be able to monitor the student process through the teacher account for each app. The teacher will also send students assessments electronically through the app. Approaching Level: Hands-On Activity Materials: base-ten blocks, Work Mat 7 Tell students they have 2 tens and 4 ones. Have students use base-ten blocks and Work Mat 7 to regroup 1 ten and make more ones. How many tens do you have? 1 ten How many ones do you have? 14 ones Tell students they have 8 tens and 0 ones. Regroup 1 ten to make more ones. How many tens do you have? 7 tens How many ones do you have? 10 ones Repeat using different groups of 10s and 1s. On Level: Hands-On Activity Materials: (19) spinners, base-ten blocks Have students work in groups of four. Have one student spin the spinner to generate and

record six numbers. Tell the second student to use the numbers to show a subtraction problem that requires regrouping of tens using base-ten blocks. Have the third student solve the problem. Tell the fourth student to check the work. Have students switch roles and repeat the activity several times. Beyond Level: Hands-On Activity Materials: number cards (09) Have students work in pairs. Have one student draw 3 cards to create a three-digit difference. Have that student write a subtraction problem with that number as the difference. Students score points by: no regrouping-1 point and regrouping tens-2 points. Have students keep track of their own points. Then have students switch roles and repeat the activity until one student scores 10 points.
