3/7/2014

After supervising Kyle Houston and closely reviewing his performance evaluations, I would recommend that Kyle spent more time and effort building leadership skills at the Atlanta headquarters before becoming a Team Leader here in Dallas. Kyle does well at contributing and facilitating group problem solving, but one area that he did struggle at was listening to the others on the team. Due to this concern I do not believe Kyle is ready to become a team leader at this time. I compiled a rating system which evaluated all 15 team members using a 0-3 scale in which each team member submitted an evaluation of all other members using three main criteria: contributing, listening, and facilitating group problem solving. Mr. Houston does very well at contributing to the group. Measuring using the 0-3 scale that I mentioned above he graded out at a 2.83/3 in this area and nobody graded him below a 2. He has met every deadline throughout the RPG project. Attending all meetings was vital in completing this project and I believe Kyle was at every one of them. Also, he offered several ideas and suggestions that were appreciated and effective to the team. Out of the three categories, this was easily his strongest. The second category I evaluated was listening. While Kyle did show listening skills by resisting to tell others what to think and by summarizing other members ideas, he did struggle in the areas of limiting discussions to the main point of meeting and letting other members talk. There were several times where other members and I included were frustrated with his inability to stay on topic and not allowing the others to speak. Overall Kyle earned a 1.96/3 in this area, with a couple other members giving him a 0. Facilitating group problem solving was the third and final area I evaluated. Kyle demonstrated problem solving skills by discarding all but the best solution, encouraging suggestions of alternative solutions, and selecting criteria for evaluating suggested ideas. But, two areas he could use improvement were defining questions to stay on topic and letting other members talk. Like I said above, Kyle didnt do well at listening to what the other members had to say and this led to him not excelling at group problem solving. There were several instances in the past six months in which I was enforced to step in to simply allow the others in the group to have a chance to give their opinions on certain aspects of the project. Due to this he received a 2.18/3. Kyle has a lot of potential and I truly believe that eventually he will be a great team leader for RPG Financial Services. I would like the opportunity to have him work on one or two other projects with me in hopes that I can help him improve in the areas he has been struggling in before promoting him. Thank you for trusting me to provide a fair evaluation of Kyle. I have done the best of my ability to be honest and paint a clear picture of his strengths and weaknesses by using specific examples of what I have seen out of him during his time at RPG! Thank you!
