English121 Yichao Wang (Kevin) Due: 11/14/13 Summary Analysis In Wolverston, Mark (2006) article Chasing Slumber published

in Psychology Today, he describes how important sleep is for all and that sleep deprivation causes significant dangerous, the author convinces the readers that sleep is really important for everyone by using a lot of statistics about how people who do not sleep enough are getting many diseases by including expert opinion about Poor sleep quality, can affect people's physical and mental health. The purpose is to show us how not sleeping is dangerous for humans body systems. Wolverston uses a lot of statistics to show us how not get enough sleep can let people be sleep deprived. For example, more than 40 percent of people fell asleep or nodded off when driving at lease once. And more than a quarter said they have drove when they could not keep their eyes open survey from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. In 2011, CDC analysis said that more than 35 percent of people get less than seven hours of sleep daily. Another study from NASA and Dinges, said that a 26-minute nap could help improve performance by 34 percent and alertness by 54 percent for pilots. You can see the high numbers of people falling asleep while driving is not safe. That is almost half of the people that are driving dangerously. So many people out there are not getting at least 8 hours of sleep and its shows us what a serious problem it is. Just a little bit nap can help improve a pilots performance by almost d ouble which is incredible! If people just get a little bit of more sleep, even a nap, can help decrease the

percentage of people falling asleep in cars, then it will be less dangerous when driving or flying a plane. He uses many expert opinions to convince us that not getting enough sleep is bad for our body systems and he tells us how to get a better sleep. Charmane Eastman, director of the biological rhythms research laboratory at Rush University Medical Center quoted, Humans evolve in a world where there wasnt electricity to make shift work possible. Were forcing people to live under conditions that were not suited for. Another study done by U.K. researchers Yvonne Harrison and James Home concluded that not getting enough sleep could effect a person making decisions or solving problems. It can harm our communication and it can let people not try new things and they will not be able to deal with fast changing situation. A fati gue researcher Mark R. Rosekinds data showed that kinds with technology in their rooms, such as, computer, phones, or video games, gets two hour less sleep compared to another kid who does not have technology in their rooms. From these expert opinion and research, you can see that not getting enough sleep at night can harm the body and it change how the person lives throughout the day. Eastman means that we are not used to the world where we have to adapt into everything. We have to change our lives to make our sleep cycles better. If we do not, then we cannot have a healthy life and it will harm our body. To improve our sleep and to get enough sleep, like Rosekinds example, we have to take technology out of our rooms so we have more sleep. Two hours is a lot of sleep and it helps people improve performances a lot. Overall, the author convinces the readers that people should get enough sleep by using a lot of statistics about how people who do not sleep enough are getting many

health problems and accidents could happen. He also includes expert opinion about Poor sleep quality, can affect people's physical and mental health and how people can get better by getting more sleep and better sleeping habits. He offers some solutions in helping people to sleep more. People on average should sleep about 8 hours a day and that will create fewer problems for the body. At the end, Wolverton says, It comes down to a question of life and death in a lot of cases. So get enough sleep is important!
