[Date] [Dear Human Resources Director/School Administrator]: I am writing to apply for the position of [Secondary English Teacher] with

the [School Name and District]. I believe that my ability to motivate students and meet student needs, my classroom management skills, and my dedication to create engaging and effective lesson plans while integrating technology into the classroom make me an exceptional candidate for a position on your school staff. I consistently work hard to motivate students and recognize each student as an individual with a unique set of needs. While student teaching at Marquette Alternative High School, I worked mostly with at-risk students who struggled academically. Many of these students dealt with difficult situations in their daily lives including poverty, substance abuse, physical abuse, mental or emotional instabilities, learning disabilities, and/or other circumstances that interfered with their academic success. During English and Publishing/Yearbook classes, I regularly kept students on task, motivating each to achieve his/her potential. I also attended IEP meetings and noted the special needs of individual students (with or without IEPS) when it came to helping with behavior management or classwork. My classroom management skills have developed successfully through my teaching experiences. I create high yet reachable expectations for students which contributes to a cooperative classroom. I exercise patience when necessary but am also adept in difficult situations. I practice positive reinforcement while offering suggestions for individual growth. In order to help my students succeed, I address my students directly, remain in contact with parents, and participate in mediated conversations with students and other teachers as needed. Students in my classes are encouraged to work independently as well as cooperatively in order to share their ideas with others. Innovative lesson plans which address multiple intelligences engage students interests and enhance classroom discussion. I often incorporate technology and current topics into educational activities to make content material relevant to young adults. Students are encouraged to be creative, reflective, and analytic about literature and writing while meeting Common Core standards and improving reading comprehension, vocabulary, speaking and listening skills. Most recently, I taught a unit on the young adult novel Insurgent, using specific guiding questions, kinesthetic vocabulary activities, and reflective journal writing to enrich student comprehension and foster meaningful discussions about the book and its relevance to social justice and personal responsibility. I believe I would make an excellent candidate for the English teacher position with your school district. My references are available for your consideration, and Im available for interviews via telephone at (906) 869-9503 or in person. You may also contact me by email at cartaylo@nmu.edu.
