Arguments against Capital Punishment Capital punishment or the death penalty is a legal process that involves killing someone as a punishment for having committed a crime. Death sentence is the official punishment ordered by a udge! which consists of the e"ecution of the convicted offender. #owadays! capital punishment is a matter of great controversy in various countries and states. $n my opinion! $ oppose the death penalty for two main reasons. To begin with! capital punishment is not a fair punishment. The death penalty is a cruel and an inhuman punishment that violates the right to every person%s life. The state has a moral obligation to protect human beings and should set an e"ample to society by not taking a criminal%s lives. There are less severe alternatives that can be applied to criminals& the gravity of the crime should be proportioned according to the severity of the punishment. $n addition! the death penalty is not an effective deterrent on crime. There is no evidence to support the claim that the death penalty is a more effective determent to violent crime than life imprisonment. The death penalty does not prevent others from committing murder& in fact! dangerous criminals do not think about it when they break the law. 'omicide rates are actually higher in states and regions that have the death penalty than in those where this punishment is not applied. (upporters of capital punishment claim that society needs stronger laws and state that capital punishment fits the crime.
