2. Job Purpose

The post holder will support the dentist or DCP by providing efficient chairside assistance and four handed dentistry. The post holder will care for and support the patient whilst in the surgery and throughout any dental procedures The post holder will carry out routine administrative duties Decontaminate and sterilise instruments and equipment effectively and efficiently

3. Dimensions

The practice employs 28 members of staff Comprises of 8 dental surgeries, supported by the local decontamination unit

6. Key Result Areas

1. The provision of effective and efficient patient care and ensuring a high standard of service is achieved at all times Daily checking and routine testing of equipment Daily cleaning of surfaces in surgery and decontamination room Set up and prepare equipment, instruments and materials Deposit and collection of instruments and equipment from clinical areas for processing Processing of equipment/instruments in a timely manner to ensure adequate stock levels Identify and report instruments/equipment which require repair/replacement Sharpening and maintenance of instruments Housekeeping of surgeries and decontamination area to ensure they are kept clean, tidy and fully stocked at all times

2. To be responsible for effective stock control Monitoring and replenishing of supplies in surgery and decontamination room Unpacking deliveries Ensure surgeries have adequate supplies of distilled water solution

3. Quality control Adhere to all practice policies and procedures as specified, including the Infection Control Policy, COSHH and Health & Fire Safety Participate in audits undertaken Maintain Continued Personal Development Maintain high standards of quality control Maintenance of equipment within the surgery

4. Administrative and Clerical Responsibilities To keep up to date with all paperwork filing and renewal Reporting of all incidents/accidents appropriately Maintain strictest confidence in relation to patient information Any other relevant duties as determined by the Practice Manager or Senior Dental Nurse

7a Equipment and machinery The dental nurse is expected to have knowledge of the equipment used within the dental surgery and the decontamination unit

Responsible maintenance of dental equipment including:

Daily monitoring Visible checks on all surgery equipment Dental unit: chair, bracket table, foot pedals, spittoon, light and suction X-ray machine Hand pieces Dental Instruments Record Logs for decontamination room equipment

8 Assignment and review of work

All dental nurses are responsible to the Senior Nurse and Practice Manager for guidance, management, work review and formal appraisal of performance The dental nurse will have responsibility for managing workloads within the dental surgery and decontamination room

Post holder will be expected to communicate with all staff within the Dental Team and with patients

Physical: Lifting and transporting containers with clean and dirty instruments Lifting baskets of instruments to and from washers and sterilisers Cleaning of surgery and local decontamination room areas Mixing and preparing of materials and equipment during clinical procedures Supporting dentist or DCP during procedures Maintaining cross infection

Mental: Time Management Checking instruments

Emotional: Communication with clinical staff Working conditions Working with the public Exposure to dirty instruments/cleaning chemicals Constant noise from the equipment and machines
