Title of Lesson: Simple Machine Stations Grade level / Science course: Middle School-7th Grade Objectives / Concepts: Students

will analyze and apply their learned content knowledge in eight inquiry-based stations that use hands-on activities and demonstrations that relate to real world-phenomena and multiple content areas, over an eight-day period. 7.P.2 Understand forms of energy, energy transfer and transformation and conservation in mechanical system. 7.P.2.4 Explain how simple machines such as inclined planes, pulleys, levers and wheel and axles are used to create mechanical advantage and increase efficiency. Time 10 min.

Presentation Outline Event Daily Introduction: Students will copy homework and daily objective and be reminded of proper stations conduct and procedures. Video: BrainPop or Youtube-Simple Machine (each day a different simple machine will be highlighted and discussed) Lab Stations 1-8: Station 1: Students will fill-in Cornell Notes worksheet by finding the information in the textbook. Student will complete 4 short math problems on work. Students will finish this station with a discovery activity that is hands on and brings what they have read about to life. Station 2: Students will conduct a demonstration that measure length, height and force by pulling a heavy object up and inclined plan using every day materials and a spring scale. Station 3: Students will fill-in Cornell Notes worksheet by finding the information in the textbook and then classify toolbox items by simple machine type into a spreadsheet. Station 4: Students will read a scenario about a dilapidated house. They will be asked to use each simple machine to repair the house in some way. The students will transfer their information onto a storyboard page. Station 5: Students will read about the ancient pyramids and construct a model on how they believe the Egyptians used simple machines. Students will then write two paragraphs for something they want to construct for their community like the Egyptians using simple machines. Station 6: Students will observe and perform different test to see how the wheel and axel does work. Students will push each other in chairs with and with out wheels and pull a book across the table with and without pencils underneath it. Once the students have answered a few questions about what they observed, students will then read about Stonehenge and make a travel brochure with facts that include how this relates to simple machines. Station 7: Students will take Cornell Notes using the textbook and complete two math problems. Once students have finished they will go to edheads.org and complete several test on simple machine and record their answers. Station 8: Students will read a scenario about loading a circus elephant into a train car. They will need to draw a picture using simple machines to complete the task. Students will finish this station by completing a vocabulary crossword puzzle. *Document in video clips 1 & 2 Exit: Students will clean up and complete an exit ticket or prompt.
