Although living in the city is more expensive than living in the suburbs, it is more convenient than living so far away. A Dear Amy, Well, here we are in the U.S. On Monday, we arrived at one of the largest airports in the world. The children were tired, but happy. Tony, my youngest child, was the most excited of the three. We are staying with my friend Paula in a gorgeous house in one of the most expensive areas. Paula tells me that some of the most successful public personalities live nearby! Tom and I are looking for a house of our own. Were finding out about the nicest neighborhoods that are also the safest for young families. On Wednesday we saw a lovely house in Westside, one of the best areas in the city. Unfortunately, Westside is also furthest from Toms work. We thought of living in the downtown area, which is closest to the schools and Toms office, but I dont think its the most suitable neighborhood for families. It was love at first sight! But I was only seventeen and very shy. Three months passed before I finally asked her out on a date. We fell in love and began dating during our final year of high school. Two years later, while I was at college, I proposed to Gloria. We got married right after I graduated. It was a very stylish wedding! Unfortunately, Gloria and I got divorced ten years later. We still talk to each other. But we both think that maybe we married too young. These days, couples wait until theyre older before they marry and start a family. Is love over for me? Not at all! Last year I met someone new. It was during a friends party. A beautiful woman started talking to me. She seemed a little embarrassed. Excuse me, but arent you David? she asked. Didnt you go to Waterfall summer camp when you were in junior high? Maybe you dont remember me, but my name is Sara Whitman. We looked into each others eyes and laughed. He told me that he had to take a loan from the bank to pay for his studies last year. Now he owes the bank $25,000! He asked me to lend him some money to help him get out of debt. I told him that I would lend him what I had, but that it wasnt enough to pay back the loan. I also asked Fred to help Dave find a steady job. Second, I received a call from Susan the other day. There was a fire in her house and it did a lot of damage. Poor thing! She told me that she couldnt pay anyone to fix up the house and that she had to repair everything herself. She asked me to lend her a hammer and an electric screwdriver. I told her that she should borrow all my tools. I said that they would all come in handy! The Independence Inn the ideal coUntRy hotel Last weekend, my wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary. We were advised by friends to book a double room in the Independence Inn, so a reservation was made online for a long weekend. Although a confirmation fax wasnt sent to us, we set off for the inn on Friday morning. At first, we were thrilled by the beauty of the inn. It was redecorated six months ago. But our excitement didnt last long. When we checked in, we were told that the reservations had been mixed up and that our room was booked by someone else. The manager apologized and said, I will see that this problem is solved immediately! A few moments later we were shown to our room. It was lovely! Fresh flowers are put in each room every day. Excellent service is offered by all the hotel staff. Delicious breakfasts are served in the coffee shop each morning. Fresh bread is baked there daily. The spa isnt situated inside the inn. It is located in a lovely garden area nearby. We were each offered a spa treatment on-the-house to make up for the mix-up with our reservation. We really enjoyed our stay at the Independence Inn! While I was being given a tour of the vineyard, Tom and a few other people were being shown how to taste wine. Kate: Sounds interesting! How is wine made? Sandra: Look at this brochure. There are pictures of the process. Here the grapes are being picked. In the next picture they are being crushed in a big machine. Kate: Whats the next stage of the process? Sandra: Here the wine is being fermented in tanks. Then it is aged in wooden barrels. In this final picture, the wine is being bottled and sealed. Kate: Thats incredible! I didnt realize it was such a long process. What was Tom doing while you were being shown around? Sandra: He was enjoying the wine in the winery! While he and the others were taking sips of the wine, the different flavors of wine were being explained by the winemaker. When I arrived at the wine tasting, Tom was being told to swirl the wine around in his glass, take a sip of the wine and then roll it around in his mouth. This is how the aroma is released.

PARENTING IS SCARY! Im expecting a baby in July. Actually, to be honest, Im expecting two babies. I havent yet gotten used to the idea of having twins. I got used to not drinking any alcohol or coffee quite easily. I didnt use to drink a lot of alcohol or coffee anyway. Im even getting used to being hungry enough to eat a horse most of the time! But I havent gotten used to the idea of being a mother. I am really nervous and scared about the challenge. Although I used to do some babysitting when I was a teenager, I am not used to caring for two little babies at the same time. My husband says its very scary for him, too. He is not used to being around babies at all. He knows hell have to get used to waking up every few hours instead of sleeping like a log every night! He also knows hell have to get used to having both a son and a daughter at the same time! We both know this is a very big deal, but arent we supposed to feel happy and excited instead of nervous? Linda Everett (24, Northampton) The experts advice: Its totally natural for you and your husband to feel this way, especially with your first kids and with having twins. Dont worry! Every parent gets used to the change in routine and taking care of children. Dont be afraid to ask parents or family members for help in the beginning until you both get used to your new role as parents.

Dear Paula, Steve and I have just got back from a wonderful vacation. It was the best vacation that Ive ever had! We stayed in a hotel which Jack recommended to us. Its not a chain hotel. Apparently it is privately owned by a guy whose wife works with Jack. When we got to the hotel there was a mix-up at the front desk. The assistant manager had given our room to a young couple who had arrived that morning. But the manager apologized and we ended up with a luxury room that opened out onto a private balcony! The huge heated swimming pool, which was near the tennis courts, was just one of the many hotel facilities. The hotel is located near a lovely little town, where we took a guided tour of the museum and the local winery. The red wine that the winery produces is delicious! After the tour we sat in a coffee shop until midday, when we headed back to the hotel for lunch. We had the best time. Did I mention we went horseback riding, too? Why dont you drop a hint to Nick? I know youre looking for a quiet place where the two of you can enjoy your wedding anniversary. Well, this is the ideal place to spend a romantic long weekend. Love, Jane

that over a thousand students and their family members and friends attended. The head of the college presented special honors certificates to students who graduated top of their courses. Their names have been officially added to the Honors List the college is so proud of. Our reporter, Sally Norman, interviewed two of the honors graduates. She was curious to know about the plans and dreams they had for the future. Amy Green, who graduated top of her class in journalism, wants to take some time off for now before she begins looking for a job as a journalist. She wants to travel and do all the things she didnt have time to do while she was studying. Its like a dream come true, she said. As of today Im free to do whatever I like. Does she plan to get married and have children in the future? Yes, I do. But first I have to find a man who likes the idea of me having my own career! Mark Hammond is an honors student in the business course that many students find so difficult. He has already been offered several jobs. Will you take the job Maran Ltd has offered you? Sally inquired. You never know, Mark replied, smiling. Maybe its the sensible thing to do. Maybe not! The first thing Im going to do is get my honors certificate framed and hang it in a place where people can see it!

To: Marsha McMann Subject: Coming down with something Ive been feeling awful all morning. Im so nauseous and dizzy. It began last night, when we had dinner in a new restaurant. The restaurant serves seafood, which I think may not have been fresh. But Mark, who also ate the fish, thinks the food was fine. He thinks I may be coming down with a 24-hour virus. The stomach virus, which is going around at the moment, has symptoms like vomiting, stomachach, and diarrhea. Maybe Ill go and see my doctor, who will check me out. In the meantime, Ill probably take the day off work! To: Linda Harrison Subject: Re: Coming down with something Your poor thing! My friend Judy, whose uncle works with Mark, has been feeling the same way as you. Guess whats wrong with her? Nothing! She is expecting a baby! Her symptoms, which also included feeling nauseous and dizzy, are connected to morning sickness. Maybe you should check out this possibility. Feel better and be in touch as soon as youve been to the doctor. To: Marsha McMann Subject: You wish! Dont be silly! Theres no way Im having a baby! Not yet, anyway. Im sure its just a virus. To be honest, you had me worried for a moment, though!
