Attitude in psychology is defined as evaluative statements or judgement concerning

objects , people, or events.

It is also one’s mind-set with respect to different facets of life.

There are 3 broad component of attitude

Cognitive Component – The rational : opinion/belief

Emotional component – The emotive : feelings

Behaviorial component – An intention to behave is a certain way towards


someone/something

Attitude develop at an early age and gets hardened as one grows.

That is why some people believe that its very difficult to change the attitude – But
research has shown that with sincere efforts and proper divertion attitude can be
changed

Changing one’s attitude sometime can be helpful as it benefits the person but also
his family and organization to which he is attached

2 type of attitude : positive and negative attitude

rResearch has indicated that the type of values one inculcate in his life, that the
type of attitude a person develop.

There are 3 important factors that contributes towards shaping of one’s attitude:

1) Heredity

2) Upbringing ie environment in which the person has been brought up

3) Values

4) If you have a positive attitude you get the most out of your life

If you have negative attitude than you live a miserable life .

There are two alternative attitude to work

What is the right attitude to work?

There are two alternative and opposite attitudes towards work. A worker generally
chooses and adopt one of those

Attitude A: Desire driven/Desireful Action


Desire is extremely important in whatever you select or choose to do in life. If there
is no desire you’ll not ne motivated to do any thing ahead.

Eg: no desire to study – won’t study

No desire to work – works prefer spending time with friends

Desire is something that is usually supported by ego

When our ego is hurt- develop desire to take a revenge

Depending on the ago and desire, the outcome result of the work will follow either
the two modes positive ie * success and satisfaction – claims on himself

Negative ie failure and dissatisfaction : blames other

With a desire driven attitude there will be positive outcome and where there is
success the worker will rarely celebrate it/.

Attitude B: Desireless Action/Detachful Involvement

This involves a deep inner commitment of the worker , self interest of the worker
towards the work life.

Workers with this attitude- work for the society, they feel work is an opportunity to
offer to sacrifice to give etc.

In this the worker has socio centric and cosmo centric attitude rather than ego
centric

Research has shown when workers has desireless action attitude he can maintain
his commitments towards his work and also has good physical and mental health.

This type of worker can take both success and failure equally

S always develop – Attitude ‘B’ which is socio centric and not ego centric.
