Lesson Summary: In this lesson plan students will identify specific 2 to 3 dimension geometric shapes according to their grade level. Students will practice finding the shapes in theyre environment. They will be able to spell and write theyre sight words by writing reflection sheets with sight words about what they have learned. Estimated Duration: the estimated tome for this lesson is three 40-60mins. Long sessions. Commentary: In this lesson I will be integrating mathematics into the students literacy to develop an understanding of where math would fit into their world. The students will read a book that shows them and names the different kinds of shaped. Students will work together to do a shape search in the classroom to locate and name these shapes. While on the search students will be as to write a reflection on their process to provide the student the opportunity to engage with one another.

Instructional Procedures: Day 1: First 10 minutes: we will start the day out by having carpet time where we will review and name all the geometric shapes that we know and add new ones such as two and three dimension shapes. 30 minutes: We will read The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Buns (Scholastic 1995) out loud all while pausing at some areas to allow the students to ask questions and predict what will be happening next. With

their prediction we will incorporate what the students already know with what they see in the book about geometric shapes. 20 minutes: After we have completed reading the story the students will pair up and I will have them get on the computer where they will visit Sammy shape website to get a better understanding of two and three dimension shapes. Day 2: 30 minutes: We will reread the story from yesterday paying close attention to the shapes and pausing long enough for the kids to ask questions. We will discuss the shapes that are not in the book and ones that are. We will chant the shapes hunting song and when I say the shape the students will point to the shape they see in the classroom and around theyre environment. As the students are pointing to the objects in and around the classroom I will have them spell it and to make sure they understand and will use the word wall for help in spelling it. Day 3 & 4: Both 30 minutes session with a lunch and recess break in between. This session is split up due to the to the amount of time to a two day lesson plan. We will review the shape charts the students will continue on the shape hunt through out the school. They will chart the 20 to 3 dimension shaped they see at the library, office, gym and other locations with in the building. The students can either sound the words out or use environmental prints to help them spell the words. Day 4: 30 minutes: The student will continue to finish up their sheets. Students will use the word wall to help spell words that the student is uncertain of and we will do last minutes catch up. Day 5: 20 minutes: As a group we will sit on the carpet and orally write out our reflection sheet for the shape hunting we had done and discuss the way we can use our environment to help us solve problem and spell better. We will also do last minute catch up.

Pre-Assessment: Before we start to read out load I will ask the students to remember any shapes that they learned in previous lessons and to try to predict what will happen next in the story. Students will also be asked to remember things that they would like to include in their reflection sheet at the end of the lesson.

Scoring Guidelines: I will be looking to see if the students can correctly identify shapes in stories. I will assess to see if they can identify shaped and relay in the story to the objects in the classroom. In Day 4 I will walk around with the students on their shape hunt and see if they can name them and spell them.

Post-Assessment: I will ask the students questions orally to review for the quiz. In the quiz student will be asked a set of 10 questions. Questions 1-5 will be a set of two pictures and students will be ask to predict what will happen in the next frame. Questions 6-10 will be name the shape and spell it correctly. Scoring Guidelines: If the student scores 85-80% or higher will be assessed as mastering the content of the lesson. If any students score lower then that they will receive reteach homework sheets to help better understand the material and will be allowed to retake it to get a better score.

Differentiated Instructional Support Students who are struggling in understanding the difference between regular and 2 dimension shapes will be paired with a student who has mastered the content to better assist them. Those students will also get extra time on Sammys shapes website to get more familiar with the content. Students who has already shown a mastery level of understanding in this content area will move on to the next lesson. That student will also be asked to help support their fellow classmates by pairing them together.

Extension I will send home copies of two-dimension and three-dimension sheets and have the students go on a shape hunt at home and while in the car. I will use cutouts for the students to make pictures. I will sure technology by taking pictures of the shapes that the students bring in and make a shape picture book.

Homework Options and Home Connections Students are asked to go on a shape hunt at and around their house. The are also encouraged reading at least 20 minutes a night to better improve their reading level. Students are also encouraged to go on the computer to Sammys Shape website.

Interdisciplinary Connections This lesson its self is an integrated lesson. I am combining math with reading to better help the students understand and use it in their everyday lives.
