How to reach Trondheim, map of the city and things to do


Situated in central Norway (see small map), the beautiful and historical city of Trondheim is easily accessible whatever your choice of transportation. By air you will land at Trondheim's modern airport Vrnes. By train (http://www.nsb.no/) from Oslo or Oslo Airport Gardermoen (a 6-7 hours trip) you can enjoy the scenery of the unique Norwegian countryside and arrive in the middle of the city (see map next page). If you are travelling by car from the south of Norway you can drive through the majestic Dovre mountains, and even spot muskoxs.

Arriving by air to Trondheim Airport Vrnes Trondheim Airport Vrnes (http://www.trondheimlufthavn.no/) is just 32 kilometres north-east of the city. Wideroe Airline has daily flights from/to Copenhagen and KLM from/to Amsterdam, so you can make easy connections to Trondheim from anywhere in Europe. There are also more than 40 daily departures/arrivals to/from Norway's capital, Oslo, and excellent connections both to the western and northern parts of Norway. Airlines flying to Trondheim Airport Vrnes: SAS BRAATHENS (http://sasbraathens.no/) Norwegian (http://www.norwegian.no/) Widere (http://www.wideroe.no/) KLM (Amsterdam - Trondheim) (http://www.klm.com/) From Trondheim Airport Vrnes to Trondheim city The airport shuttle bus (Flybussen) runs every 15 minutes and stops at many of the central hotels and central connection points in the city. You will find the bus outside the arrival hall at the airport (there is only one bus-operator). All busses will go directly to Trondheim and is a cheap and comfortable method of transport that brings you directly to Trondheim city. The bus will stop at the Royal Garden hotel (the symposium venue hotel) and the bus-driver will announce the arrival to this (and other) hotels. The bus-ticket is 70 NOK. You can also reserve a taxi for the trip from the airport to the city. Its important to make a reservation before arrival by calling TronderTaxi (+47 930 07373). The taxis can be found outside the arrival hall and will cost 280 NOK per person (if youve made reservations). Hurtigruten Trondheim Bergen Social event September 9th and 10th Please note that if you are planning to join the social event on September 9th and 10th, you will have to arrange your travel plans accordingly. You will fly to Trondheim Airport Vrnes in order to participate in the symposium. The trip with Hurtigruten will take you from Trondheim to Bergen some 500 km to the south. You will then need to depart from Bergen Airport Flesland by airplane to whatever your final destination will be. Please consult your travel agency when ordering airplane tickets. What to do in Trondheim
Trondheim offers many sights and activities to visitors here are a few suggestions for places to visit on your own. Nidarosdomen (the Nidaros Cathedral) and Erkebispegrden (Archbishops Palace) King Olav Haraldsson was the king who introduced Christianity to Norway. He was buried close to Nidelven, the river Nid, after he was killed in the battle of Stiklestad in1030. Tradition has it that the high Altar of the Cathedral now stands on the exact spot of this burial site. One year and five days after he died the King was declared a saint, and pilgrims began to flock to Nidaros and the King's grave. Together with the Nidaros Cathedral the Archbishop's Palace holds a unique position in the history of Norway. From the middle of the eleventh century the palace was a spiritual and political centre. The Archbishop's Palace was the centre of the Norwegian archdiocese, which comprised not only Norway but also the Faeroes, Shetland, the Isle of Man, Iceland and Greenland. The museum is located at Ringve Grd, a mansion dating from the 1700s. Guided tours only. Munkholmen the tiny island just outside Trondheim harbour was a prison in the seventeenth century. The old buildings have been restored, and today Munkholmen is open to the public during the summer months. You will find a small restaurant and a beach, and guided tours are given every day. Munkholmen is reached by a 10 minutes boat trip, the boat leaving from Ravnkloa every hour between 1000 and 1700. Vitensenteret, Kongensgate 1. This science centre was established as a collaboration between the university and other institutions in Trondheim. Vitensenteret is an exiting venue for both adults and children, where you can try out various experiments, such as a cyclocopter, making your own weather forecast etc. The Museum of Natural History and Archaeology has collections and exhibitions dealing with natural and cultural history. There is a separate exhibition concerning medieval Trondheim, and also for the culture of the southern Sami people. Trondheim Art Museum is located in Bispegata 7B next to the Nidaros Cahtedral. The collection focuses on Norwegian fine art from the middle of the nineteenth century and until present and includes several graphics by Edvard Munch (The Scream and Madonna among others). Trndelag Folk Museum Sverresborg is an open-air museum of local cultural history in a natural setting. Besides its more than 60 buildings from the countryside and the old town, indoor exhibitions aim to illustrate the daily life in both urban and rural areas in former days. The museum can be reached by bus no 8 towards Sverresborg. See http://www.sverresborg.no/english/ Golf There are a number of golf courses in the vicinity of Trondheim. Because of the short nights in Trondheim during summer the possibility of midnight golfing is a popular attraction. The closest golf course is at Trondheim Golf Club, which is located ca. 3 km from the city centre. They have a 9 hole course situated in a beautiful location overlooking the city. Somewhat further away 18 hole courses are found at Byneset Golf (about 20 km from the city) and Stjordal Golf Club overlooking Trondheim airport (about 40 km from the city). Pirbadet Norways largest indoor swimming facility is located in the harbour area. Buses nos. 46 and 52 stop just outside Pirbadet. Tyholttrnet the tower which can be seen from most places in Trondheim. From the restaurant 74 m above ground level - you have a magnificent view of Trondheim, the fjord and the surrounding mountains. The restaurant floor is rotating slowly, allowing you to see the whole area in 60 minutes. Tyholttrnet can be reached by buses nos. 60 and 20. Graakallbanen the only tram line in operation in Trondheim. The tram leaves from St. Olavs gate approx. twice an hour (summer schedule not yet ready) and passes through the western suburbs of Trondheim to Lian. The whole trip takes 20 25 min. At Lian there is a small lake where it is possible to swim, and also a restaurant. Lian is the perfect starting point for walks or jogging into Bymarka (the recreation area of Trondheim). Shopping In the city centre, there are many shops in easy walking distance from the hotel. Outside of the city you will find shopping malls like City Syd (take the bus from the city centre).
