Recess Lesson Plan Grade Level: 2nd to 3rd grade Lesson Objectives: Students will work on their body

y movement skills (locomotor, nonlocomotor, and manipulative). Students will understand body awareness. Students will understand space awareness. Students will work on their group participation skills. Equipment: Play area (gym or area with access to blacktop and grass) Bean Bag/ Hackie Sack Tape (masking or stage). Volleyball net Volleyball

Activity Description: There are five stations with various tasks. The children are divided into groups of 2 by the teacher. The major goal is to complete three of the five stations in the 15 minutes provided. Also, one of the three has to be either station one or five. To move on to the next station the previous stations goal must be met. At least 5 minutes should be spent explaining what each station is asking them to do and the expected manner the children should be displaying while doing these stations. Each Station can accommodate 3 groups. Station Breakdown:

1. Hopscotch Equipment: Area (gym or blacktop) Bean bag/ hackie sack Tape

Goal: Completion of the activity by both children 2 separate times. Only 1 time. Description: The hopscotch area should be available. The child in the group that decides to go first must go to the box marked 1 and toss the provided bean bag so that it lands on one of the ten (1-5) boxes. They will the hop to the end while avoiding the box with the bean bag in it. Then they will turn and hop back but while on the way back must pick up the bean bag. They will then switch back and forth until both have done it twice. One block mean 1 foot, two boxes next to each other means one foot can be in each box. Example of setup:

Picture on the left shows variations of board setup. Picture on the right visually demonstrates how the activity works. 2. Track Equipment: Area Tape

Goal: Both children run at the marked area and back 2 times. Only 1 time. Description: Two tape lines on the ground will indicate how far the child has to run. The child who decides to go first must go to the start line while the other child will stand on the x that is a yard away from the start line. The child on the x will say Go and the child at the start line will run as fast as they can without injuries to the end line and back to the start line. This distance should be 4-5 yards long. Once the return to the start line they must then walk to their partner and switch. They will do this until both of them have run twice. 3. Jumping Equipment: Area Tape

Goal: Jump as high as possible 5 times, twice. Only 3 times. Description: Two x marks on the jump mark where the children should stand. One child will jump while the other tries to gauge without getting close how high they went. Then the will swap back and forth until both have jumped 5 times. After a child has jumped the one who watched should

show them in comparison to them how high they jump. For example if the child notice that the area under the others feet during the jump was about the distance from the ground to the childs ankles then he would say you jumped this high. And demonstrate with his hand and ankle. 4. Multitasking Equipment: Area Tape

Goal: Pat head and rub stomach at same time during the length of the alphabet twice. Only once through the alphabet. Description: x marks where the child going first stands the one singing the alphabet should be facing them and watching them perform the task. Once the alphabet has been completed they must switch places back and forth until they have both done it 2 times. 5. Volleyball Serving Volleyball Passing Equipment: Area Volleyball Net (Not needed) Volleyball Tape

Goal: Serve the volleyball overhand over the net 5 times. Pass the ball successfully 3 times. Description: x mark on the rough area where the server will stand in. while a line a distance behind them will represent the closest the partner can get. The server will first make sure no one is in the area getting a ball.

Then they will serve and run to retrieve the ball. The ball will be returned to the x and they will walk to switch places. These steps will be repeated until both have made it over the net 5 times. They will pass the ball to their partner 3 times either the partner can pass the ball back or catch it, whichever is more comfortable for them. Assessment Options: Self-Evaluation- a 5 question evaluations where they state what stations they did, how well they did, and how much they liked these activities. Peer Evaluation- a 4 question evaluation where they will state what stations they did, how well their partner did, and if they believe their partner enjoyed the activity. Teacher Evaluation- teacher chooses one or two stations to evaluate every student. This will evaluate how well the children did to a higher level than the self or peer evaluations. This is the choice of the teacher to select which they would like to do and switch between them is even better. Examples:

Benefits of Activity: Movement Skills Used: Locomotor: walk, run, jump, and hop Nonlocomotor: bend, twist, turn, rise, and balance Manipulative: throw and overhand serve

Body Awareness Used: Weight transfer Balancing/weight bearing Flight Shapes Focus

Space Awareness Used: Personal space General space Directions Pathways

Quality of Movement Used: Speed of movement Effort of movement Free Flow

Body Relationship Used: Body to Equipment

Variations: Any station can easily be changed. Keep in mind though that if 1 or 5 are switched out they should be replaced with another activity beneficial to the manipulative skills. Another thing is the size of the groups can be altered where needed; the stations at this point accommodate a class size of 30 students. Also, stations can be tweaked to fit needs of the class. For example if a group is in jumping (station 3) and one or both are in wheelchairs then instead of jumping then they could toss a ball in the air as high as they can (without injuries) and catch it five times. In red is a variation to shorten the time and need of the lesson.

This lesson plan took a lot of thinking to come up with. I wanted something that was motivational and beneficial, fun and safe, and met the needs of a typical class with the altering ability for special needs students. The stations were a motivational choice; with stations they all are not forced to do the same thing whether they like it or not. Also, it gives them a sense of making choices. From a developmental stand point I think the stations would help with the students that have ADD or ADHD because they are not being expected to focus on one task for a long period of time. I considered the different types of

diversity and made the decision that the teacher would select the group in hopes that this will lessen the likelihood of demotivating a student by putting them with someone that makes the experience a horrible one. Safety is always a huge concern of mine. I dont like to get injured so I make every precaution to be safe. The issue I came to was being safe but not taking all the fun out. So I came up with the idea of using tape to mark things off, like start/end lines and x, so that the children were still being involved with one another but a safe distance to not get hurt by one another if an accident should happen. Also, for safety the teacher should be spending at least 5 minutes explaining how to do each station correctly and also what behavior is expected from them while playing.
