Lloyd, 70, pediatric dentist

Robert William Lloyd, 70, of Jenkintown, a pediatric dentist caring for children, teens, and specialneeds patients for more than 40 years in his private practice in Jenkintown, died suddenly Friday, April 18, of a heart attack. "Bob," as he was known by most, also cared for the residents at the Home of the Merciful Savior in Philadelphia and the Lynch Home in Gwynedd Valley, and was on the dental staff at Abington Memorial Hospital and at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for 39 years. The Army veteran was a member of the American Dental Association and the Pennsylvania Dental Association and was a diplomat of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Lloyd was born July 12, 1943, in Youngstown, Ohio, and moved to Chicago as a boy. He graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., where he was a member of Sigma Chi. After earning his D.M.D. from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, he joined the Army. He was stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C., before serving a tour in Vietnam, where he was stationed at the main dental clinic and completed dental service missions to forward bases. He received a Bronze Star and a citation for community outreach to the local population. Upon returning home, he completed his dental residency at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was chief resident of the pediatric program.

Dr. Lloyd then went into practice with Manuel Album in Jenkintown, running Dentistry for Children Inc. after Dr. Album's retirement until his death. Dr. Lloyd created a warm office atmosphere with a group of close-knit staff, said Bonnie Lloyd, his wife of 48 years. His patients loved coming to him, she said. He was a dentist who also loved Halloween and came to the office wearing false teeth every year. At home, he and his wife handed out toothbrushes along with chocolate treats. "He was probably one of the kindest, most generous gentlemen you could ever meet," his wife said. Dr. Lloyd's involvement with the Rotary Club of Jenkintown included a term as president and many years on the executive committee. He was also a member of Abington Presbyterian Church and Huntingdon Valley Country Club. He volunteered as a coach and parent organizer for many of his children's activities. Sailing aboard the family sloop, Anemone, on the Chesapeake Bay was a favorite summer activity. Many sailing trips in the Caribbean Islands kept Dr. Lloyd at the helm in the colder months. Traveling, tennis, pottery, golf, and trap-shooting were some of his favorite activities. He also liked to make home-brewed beer for special events, such as his children's weddings. He and his wife took dance lessons together.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Lloyd is survived by daughters Christine and Gwynn, son Andrew, and two granddaughters. Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Abington Presbyterian Church, 1082 Old York Rd., Abington.
