Unit Study: Countable/Uncountable Lesson 2 Scavenger Hunt

Lesson Title: Lesson 2 Grade Level: Early Intermediate Time Allotted for the Lesson: 50 min. Short Description of Lesson (50 words or less): This is a small multi-language group of young adult learners. (12 students) They are part of an English language class that meets at First Baptist Church on Saturday mornings and two nights a week. This lesson is a continuation of countable and uncountable nouns and includes a review followed by an introduction to the use of articles and quantifiers used with them. Classroom Layout and Grouping of Students: The learners meet in a Sunday school classroom. There is white board and media equipment. Chairs are arranged in a circle and can easily be moved for group activity. There are also tables that can be used for written work. This is the Wednesday evening class. A cookout and Scavenger Hunt are on the agenda after the Saturday class. (see Lesson 3, Extended Activity) Activity will move between class assembled in circle before white board, to tables for individual work, to group/pairs activities.

Quantifiers Info Gap Activity Sheet Learning Objective(s): Students will be able to use appropriate articles and quantifiers with countable and uncountable nouns. They will know the meaning of appropriate quantifiers to modify the nouns and be able to use them in conversation. Instructional Procedures: 1. Lesson Set: Lesson 2 will open with a review of lesson 1 through Warm Up activity and Media to engage the learners. Use of articles and determiners will be introduced. Students will practice using the appropriate articles and determiners with the items on their Scavenger Hunt list from Lesson1. 2. Techniques and Activities: 1. 5 Min Warm Up Question: Did you have an opportunity to do the online activity? How well did you do categorizing the nouns? Discuss any words they found difficult to categorize.

Brainstorm other quantifier: write the quantifies that were used in the video on the board: few, a few, little, a little Brainstorm other quantifiers with the students dividing words that indicate large amounts or small amounts into two lists. Guide them into finding the following quantifiers that will be in the worksheet activity: some, several, any, many, much, lots of, a lot of, plenty of Use sugar and lemon drops to illustrate the quantifiers, so that the meaning of each is clear. The measuring cup and spoon can be used to show amounts like some sugar, lots of sugar, etc. 6. 10 min.Worksheet: Quantity Allow them to work on these in pairs. Check answers with them and clarify any questions.

7. Lesson Closure:15 min Info Gap Activity The students are given a handout that has a list of items in inventory (may need to help them find meaning of the word and a list of items they need to order. Note: many of the items on the Inventory/Order List are taken from the Scavenger Hunt lists they created in Lesson 1. They are now learning to use the words in questions and in sentences. Distribute the Inventory List/ Order List Half the students should have an A list and half should have B Talk about the activity. Explain what goes in each column. Answer questions about the activity. Model the activity. Ask for a student volunteer and model the language that will be used to check mark their lists. Ask students is there another I way I could have said, Do you have any ____? or I have some_____. Let them look at the items on their list and suggest ways to ask for these things or tell whether they do or dont have an item. Note: They may need the vocabulary for pair of, box of, page of, piece of, can of, bottle of, cartons, of, bar of, etc. when using uncountable nouns. Review making plurals (-s,-es) if needed. Do the activity- Students mingle to find someone with the items they need and respond when asked for an item from their inventory. They will need to put a check in the box next to items so they can keep up with what is still in their inventory and how much of an item they collected.
