B. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson is day one of a two-day lesson to teach students how technological advances have impacted Nevada. The class will make a T chart to organize all the ways we discuss. Basic Information: Grade Level: 4th grade Time to Complete this Lesson: 50 minutes Groupings: Whole group

C. Materials: Pencils Paper Images old Nevada Picture from Tuesdays lesson of an old classroom D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o E. Vocabulary Impact Having a strong effect on someone or something Mining The process of obtaining coal or other minerals from a mine H.3.4.4 Explain how advances in technology have impacted Nevada. H.3.4.4 I can explain ways technology has changed Nevada. Student-Friendly Standards

F. Procedure: 1. To begin the lesson, start a whole class discussion about ways the students have seen technology advance. Probe the students with questions about things they are familiar about such as the newest iPhone or game system. Show students the picture from Tuesday lesson of the classroom and ask students to tell you the advances in technology they see. 2. Introduce the first vocabulary word impact. (Make sure to clarify that impact also means to make contact with something). Explain to students that the change in technology over the years has impacted our state. Ask students to share any thoughts they have about the possible ways so far. 3. Instruct students to make a T chart on a sheet of paper. Label one column as advances and the other column impact. Completes on the elmo with the students and fill the columns as the lesson goes along.

4. Start off by showing an image of Virginia City and introduce the second vocabulary word mining. Discuss with the students all the difference and the impacts they have on Nevada. Fill out the t chart with the changes the students share. Show other pictures of Las Vegas today compared to Las Vegas in the 50s and add the changes to the chart. Virginia City.

G. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the T Charts as the way to measure assessment. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. The students need to explain how advances in technology have impacted Nevada and by using visuals to see the way Nevada has advanced they can understand that technology has had a big impact on our state. H. Closure: To close the lessons explain to students that we are going to continue this topic tomorrow, but we will be learning about one advancement in particular, the Hoover Dam.

Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? The part of the lesson that will be the easiest is the opening discussion. I believe it will get the students thinking about technology advances in general and then they will be ready to spot the advances in Nevada. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The hardest part will probably be making sure all the students participate because in making the chart as a class. I will have to watch out for hogs and logs in the group. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? Possible way to extend the lesson would be having the students choose one advancement discussed and write a essay explaining the impact in detail. 4. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students you are struggling with the concept I will find time in tomorrows schedule to work individually with a small group using the photos and a chart. Hopefully more individual attention will clear up any confusion. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? The lesson may need to be changed if I feel that I am doing the assignment for them and they are just copying the overhead. I will be able to make corrections based off of participation. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?

The most difficult part was deciding what type of graphic organizer I wanted to use to have the students write down all the ways they see. I decided on a T Chart based on simplicity.
