(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1815862/) This film starts Will smith and his son Jaden, using father and son as actors is good within this film as it is easy for them to portray a father son eske relationship on screen as they have one already off camera. This allows them to add empathy and compassion for one another within the film without forcing it; this allows good acting to take place. This film follows a more of a complex structure, following more of a Todorov theory of the 5 specific points, but with a twist as the film starts with a state of disequilibrium and disruption as they have a crash landing where Cypher is hurt, followed by recognition of what they have to do to stay alive and return to where why came from, to repairing the damage of the crash and getting back to the new state of equilibrium and happiness. This could be seen to have states of Levi Strauss's theory of use of binary oppositions, they may be stranded on earth but the binary opposition could be them learning how to save earth and change it to what it was once know. As they may see it as bad but it could benefit them and turn out to be a positive. The film is classed as an hybrid film, where 2 or more genres fit into a film, with After earth it is an adventure, sci fi and action based film; as its very jumpy, based full of fighting and action packed, this concludes the iconography of the film as all props, costumes and equipment used within the film re-iterates and back the genre of the film such as weapons and flashy gadgets. The time and use of props makes the film sci-fi as everything is developed due to the time, location and what's happened in the past, for example moving to another planet and abandoning earth due to the state and all sources used and wasted, excessive progress in weaponry and costume used, Jaden wears a very skin tight suit armour to prove the progress In which warfare has developed. The use of technology used within the film also re-enforces the time, and progress futuristic life has undergone. The use of diegetic sound when will smith says everything on this planet has evolved cause confusion to the audience as you dont

know whether he's talking to Jaden or to the audience informing them on the progress in life earth has taken. He also informs and tracks the progress on the narrative, informing and giving an idea of what may happen further on. The targeted and marketed audience for after earth is mainly males, however females may be eager to see the film due to going to the cinema with husbands and boyfriends. The predominantly male audience is shown by the genre. Being a sci-fi and fantasy film you can see the big attraction for males due to the use of technology and weaponry used within the film. This film is not seen to be shown as a quadrant audience as its a mainly male predominately film. Ages for this audience would be limited due to the rating. British rating of the film is a 12a; this means children would have to be accompanied by an adult. The film producers were clever about advertising the film as they made Facebook adverts and pop ups added to the usual t.v and radio adverts every film has. They added Facebook users and sent invites to all users adding and promoting the movie. This could be seen as a con towards the film as if everyone is getting invites to seen the film it may be shown as a failure as they need people to go and see it, this could be a binary opposition. Although it could be seen as a competitive advantage as it will be impossible to avoid when connecting to Facebook and most people will connect, at least for a second to see what it is making this advertising strategy stand out. Allowing a movie premiere in New York on Wednesday May 29 at Ziegfeld Theatre with big movie stars and celebrities attending such as Justin Bieber and 50 Cent, this raised the profile of the film, also having Jaden being nominated for teen bad ass at the MTV awards also boosted the films recognition. During its opening weekend, After Earth took in $27,520,040 in box office receipts in North America and $2,535,685 in South Korea. Sony Pictures projected a launch of around $38 million, but the actual number was 16.6% lower than the lowest prerelease expectation of $33 million. The estimated worldwide marketing budget for After Earth was approximately $100 million in addition to the $135 million to produce the film. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_Earth) The editing within this film is shown via the use of technology and visual effects the camera uses. They used a 4k resolution camera; this allows them to use 4,000 pixels within a shot. Making the camera shot a high resolution, often used in T.v programming; its used as an ultra high definition within shows. Sony make lots of cameras of this standard and sort, this could be why they have used them within the film as they are funded by Sony pictures. There are lots of representations presented in this film, Jadens character is seen as the hero, as he has numerous fighting scenes and has the duty of looking after him, his

father and earth. Will smiths character is shown to be the helper, donor, father and dispatcher as he has trained and guides his son throughout his mission and campaign on earth as he cannot physically help him due to getting injured when the plane crashes he speaks to him and watches his journey due to the fantasy technology within the film. This links nicely with the iconography of the film, technology is shown to prove the film is sci-fi and fantasy based. Will uses a piece of technology to heal his wound; they used special effects and a white glow around his leg as he moved the apparatus down to show healing. Some of the actors fit the typical stereotypes used in films (young male is the hero, and the father is the helper and dispatcher, all based on Propps theory). The use of mise en scene in the film shows the clothing and costume can clearly identify the difference in times; showing its a futuristic film. Use of non diegetic sound uses voice over's and sound tracks, flashbacks and transitions they use non diegetic sound to show and build suspense throughout the film, this makes viewers want to continue watching and to eventually see the film. And uses diegetic as dialogue describing the film, whats going on and what will happen in the film. Talking about future and present. Use of titles on the screen to ask questions to audience, display actors, availability of the film itself. The trailer uses titles displaying text to transition from section to section. Lots of editing is used throughout this trailer and a lot of examples are used, the use of transitions through scene to scene jump, there is a chronological order through this, it shows all the main parts within the film and more, giving a lot of the narrative away. Relationships within this trailer are shown via camera angles used, this can re-enforce moods, feelings towards each other, also who is the more powerful character in the conversation due to the angle or shot type for example looking up at a character shows power. However most of the conversations are shown via Jaden and Will talking through a microphone, this has a hidden meaning of although they may not be close together but are actually in retrospect as they are able to communicate. They are shown to be closely bonded and have a healthy strong relationship as they both have shown to have high levels of confidence in each other as Will believes in Jaden on the quest; this is backed up by them being father and son. This fits the generic father son stereotype. Camera can also re-enforce age within characters.
