4.6 RECOGNITON AND AWARD Recognition and Award has an important role in motivation and employee satisfaction.

They are powerful moves for letting employee satisfaction. They are powerful moves for letting employees know they are important members of the business organization. Recognition and award recognize and promote goal related activities. Awards are forms of employees involvement in which the organization identifies and gives recognition to employees who made a positive contribution to the organizations success. Award should be appropriate to the situation by being rank-ordered, the higher the achievement, the higher the award. Example: safety awards should warrant a greater award than reducing tardiness. Awards may be such things as a bonus, salary increase, and change in title, promotion, concert tickets, educational tour, or perhaps a part on the back and etc. Japanese companies have good track records of providing awards for employees contributions to the improvement of quality and the increase of productivity. Their award system certainly plays a major role in providing incentives for employees to produce to their maximum potential and to take pride in the quality of work. Awards are a technique for telling employees what is important to the organization. In this connection, management should make certain that the organizations priorities are what the employees believe they are. If employees are rewarded for something they do not believe is important, the incentive aspect is lost. Incentives will not force employees to strive for excellence but will encourage them to do so. Employees should be represented in the planning and implementing of the recognition and award program. Programs that are developed with employee involvement will most likely succeed. It should be fully understood by the employees and reviewed periodically because priorities either the employees or the organizations - may change. By nature, people like to be recognized, whether as a team or individually. Award and recognition does not necessarily mean money. An individuals feeling of value, knowing the organization cares, and having peer recognition may be more important than money. Recognition and awards may be given in a variety of ways. They can range from a simple handshake or pat on the shoulder to a simple party or a formal banquet in honor of the individual or team. The recognition and award should be appropriately presented, so that fellow employees will know about it. A letter sent to the recipients family gives added image to the employees accomplishment. A travelling award, passed from winner to winner, is a good way of giving recognition to a productive employee or team. Some suggestions of presenting awards are: 1. Relate the award to achievement. 2. Frame certificates 3. Presents the award by the appropriate level of management. 4. Use the local press to inform family and friends about awards received. 5. Present the award in the appropriate surroundings. 6. Vary the method of presenting awards. 7. Diversify the award, i.e. concert tickets, or basketball tickets.
