Todays kids are busier than ever before. Commitments in
the classroom coupled with a full slate of extracurricular
activities have ensured that many of todays school-aged
children dont have a minute to spare.
While its important for kids to embrace extracurricular
activities, parents know its not always easy helping kids find
the right activity that allows them to grow outside the
classroom while still focusing on their responsibilities inside
it. In addition, kids interests tend to change at the drop of a
hat, so something they want to do today might bore them
come tomorrow. To help kids choose and manage their
extracurricular activities, consider the following tips.
* Emphasize that schoolwork must come first. Kids get
excited about extracurricular activities, especially ones
involving sports where they get to spend time playing with
their friends. But parents should emphasize that school still
comes first and that, if schoolwork starts to suffer,
participation in extracurricular activities will be put on hold
until kids get their studies back on track.
* Go over coursework at the start of the school year. Examine
a childs course load before choosing an extracurricular
activity. Its important to do this each year, as coursework gets
more difficult as children get older. Just because a child could
handle a couple of afterschool activities a week when he or
she was in fifth grade does not mean such a schedule will be
as manageable when the same child reaches high school. Go
over coursework and requirements as early as possible,
preferably before the school year starts, so you and your child
can get a grip on what can and cant be handled with regards
to extracurricular activities.
* Get a grasp of the commitment required of a given activity.
Extracurricular activities require various levels of
commitment. Varsity sport participation, for example,
typically requires daily commitment and often requires kids
to participate on weekends or even the sports off-season,
which may include summer vacation. However, volunteering
with a local charity likely wont require such a large
commitment and such charities often allow volunteers to
choose their own schedules. Parents and their children should
consider the level of commitment an extracurricular requires
and choose the activity theyre most comfortable with.
* Dont forget the fun factor. Extracurricular activities are not
just supposed to instill character, theyre also supposed to be
fun. If kids arent having fun or showing any interest in a
given extracurricular activity, then help them find another
one. Kids need time to have fun away from school just like
adults need time for fun away from the office. Weigh how
enjoyable a given activity figures to be for your youngster
before signing them up.

How To

Dawn of the
Diesel Era?
Demand for diesel
vehicles increasing
Common misconceptions about
fuel ef ciency
Fuel efciency is an important issue for car buyers,
and understandably so. Conserving fuel is good for
drivers budgets and the planet, so the concept of fuel
efciency would seem to benet everyone.
But just because fuel efciency is a good concept
does not mean there are not misconceptions about
it among drivers and automotive professionals alike.
The following are some of the more widely held
misconceptions about fuel efciency.
Full tanks conserve fuel. Many people have long
believed that a nearly full tank of gas means the fuel
within that tank is less likely to evaporate, and that
tanks that half-full tanks are losing gas to evaporation.
Though this might have been the case years ago,
todays vehicles are smarter than ever before, and
their fuel systems are designed with vapor recovery
systems so drivers traveling around with tanks that
are closer to empty than full arent losing gas to
evaporation.
Manual transmissions are more fuel efcient.
Technology can once again be credited with turning
conventional wisdom on its head. In the past, manual
transmission vehicles might have been more fuel
efcient because drivers could more efciently control
engine revving with a 5-speed manual transmission
than they could with the standard 3-speed automatic
transmission. However, automatic transmissions have
evolved over the years, and they are now more adept
at controlling revs and conserving fuel than many
drivers of manual transmission vehicles.
When you ll up matters. Some drivers have long
believed that lling up during the cooler hours of the
day earns them more gas than lling up when the
temperatures are at their peak. This theory traces its
origins to the fact that liquids are at their most dense
when they are cool. But todays lling stations store
their gas in tanks beneath the ground, which is why
you might see a tanker emptying its contents into
the ground at the lling station. These underground
tanks are insulated from temperature swings, so you
arent likely to receive any more gas by lling up in the
morning than you will when lling up at night.
An old vehicle is destined to be less fuel efcient.
Any product that is allowed to fall into disrepair
will prove less efcient than products that are well
maintained, and cars are no exception. A poorly
maintained car will not operate at peak fuel efciency
because its likely being forced to work harder to get
down the street than it would if it was well kept. But
a well-maintained vehicle should not grow less fuel
efcient over time.
Shifting into neutral while stopping saves gas.
This is another misconception that was once true but
no longer applies thanks to advances in technology.
When engines still had carburetors, shifting into
neutral might have helped conserve fuel by stopping
the ow of gas into the engine while the car was idling.
However, fuel injection systems are now computerized
and capable of sensing when an engine is revving
above idle. This shuts off the fuel injectors, preventing
gas from being injected into the engine and preventing
gas from being wasted while the vehicle is stopped as
a result.
Taking steps to conserve fuel is a good way for drivers
to save money and benet the environment. However,
some of the conventional means to conserving fuel
are no longer viable.

How to change
a fat tire
Many drivers will experience a at tire at some point in their lives. Flat
tires can be a nuisance, especially if a at leaves you stranded on the
side of an empty road with little opportunity for passing trafc to help you.
Knowing how to change your own tire can keep you from sitting on the
side of the road waiting for a tow truck or fellow motorist.
There is no need to feel helpless when your vehicle gets a at tire.
Changing a at tire is relatively easy and can take just a few minutes if you
are prepared and know how to get the job done.
1. Turn on your emergency ashing hazard lights and pull the car safely
over to the side of the road where you will not be in the path of trafc.
2. Try to nd a level, stable surface so that the car will not roll.
3. Put the car in park and engage the emergency brake. Place bricks or
wooden blocks under the tires on the opposite side to prevent the car
from rolling.
4. If you have cones or ares, use them to make your vehicle more visible
to fellow motorists. This can save you from being struck while
changing the at.
5. Connect the jack handle to the rest of the device. Slide the jack under a
secure part of the car frame near the damaged tire.
6. Use a screwdriver to pry off the wheel cover or remove the hub cap to
gain access to the lug nuts on the tire.
7. Use your tire wrench to nd the side of the wrench that matches the
size of the lug nuts. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to loosen all the
nuts. Loosen them until they can comfortably be removed all the way
by hand.
8. Use long strokes when pumping the jack to reduce the effort you have
to put. Lift the car up until the wheel clears the ground.
9. Remove the lug nuts and store them in a safe spot until later. Grasp the
at tire with both hands and pull it toward you until it clears the ends of
the bolts. Roll the at to the rear of the vehicle.
10. Lift the spare tire into place and slide it in completely over the bolts.
11. Replace the lug nuts and tighten them by hand.
12. Carefully lower the vehicle and remove the jack. Tighten the lug nuts
completely with the wrench. Then replace the wheel cover.
13. Put the at in the trunk for proper disposal or repair later on.
14. Remove the blocks from your tires and disengage the
emergency brake.
You should now be ready to get back on the road.
How to get the best rate on a car loan
Many consumers nance their vehicle
purchases, meaning they must apply
for a loan. Finding the best rate
possible can reduce the cost of vehicle
ownership considerably. Research is any
consumers best friend, especially when
buying an automobile, and understanding
the market and the interest rates available
can save drivers substantial amounts of
money. Heres how to secure the best
interest rate possible.
Begin by requesting a copy of your
credit report. Review the information and
address any issues or inconsistencies
that may be negatively affecting your
credit score. Banks use credit scores to
determine prospective borrowers credit
worthiness. A poor credit history can
negatively inuence purchasing power.
Determine a budget to gure out what
is affordable. Lower the interest rate
by shortening the duration of the loan. A
longer loan term generally carries with it
a higher interest rate. If it is possible to
put down more money and reduce the
length of the loan, you can earn a smaller
interest rate, paying less over the life of
the loan.
Shop around with various lenders to
see if you can get a better deal. While
dealerships may offer nancing specials,
they are not always the least expensive
bet. Banks or credit unions may offer
lower rates to their account holders.
Investigate all possibilities and get at
least three loan quotes before making a
decision.
Purchasing a new car may pay off in
terms of a lower loan rate. Very often
nancing packages are offered on new
vehicles, including zero percent rates as
introductory rates or over the duration of
the loan.
Buy a car you can afford. You will pay
less by nancing a lower-priced vehicle.
Purchase the car you need, but make
sure its a car you can afford as well.

Todays diesel vehicles have been
redesigned and reimagined, making
them a growing commodity for buyers.
While diesel cars and trucks were
once the relative outcasts of the
automotive consumer market, diesel
passenger vehicles are now the center
of newfound demand.
One of the main draws of diesel cars
and trucks is their fuel economy.
Consumers focused on saving money
and protecting the planet concurrently
often nd that diesel vehicles are more
fuel efcient than vehicles that run on
regular unleaded gasoline. Although
diesel costs more at the pump than
other fuels, drivers who fuel up with
diesel gasoline can save around
30 percent through improved fuel
efciency over regular gasoline. That
can add up to considerable savings
over time. According to Rushlane,
demand for diesel vehicles in the
United States was just 3 percent in
2011. It is predicted to increase to a
minimum of 10 percent during the next
10 years.
Why are diesels more efcient?
Diesel engines are more efcient than
gasoline engines. Higher compression
ratios than gasoline produce ultra-
high temperatures that will ignite fuel
injected directly into the cylinder head,
according to BMW. Diesel vehicles are
equipped to use more of the energy
content of the fuel to produce output
than vehicles that run on regular
unleaded gasoline. It takes less fuel to
provide the same power as standard
gasoline.
In the past, diesel cars were
associated with black, sooty exhaust
and clanking engines. However,
todays modern diesel cars are quiet
and burn fuel more cleanly due to
new technology. New, clean diesel
fuel is the only diesel fuel being sold
in the United States. Although diesel
vehicles have been popular in Europe
for a while, they have not been very
appealing in North America. Things are
starting to change.
German-based Volkswagen, BMW,
Mercedes-Benz, and Audi have a
history of offering an extensive range
of diesel-powered vehicles in the
American market. Recognizing the
demand for diesel cars and trucks,
Chevrolet/GMC, Ford and Jeep are
now offering diesel vehicles that
they hope will attract a new legion of
customers.
Diesel-fueled cars have evolved
through the years to be vehicles
that can rival gasoline-powered
automobiles on the roads. With
superior fuel economy, diesel vehicles
may one day surpass the number of
gasoline vehicles.
Demand for diesel
vehicles increasing
Diesel cars are becoming more
popular among consumers.
Did You Know?
In the future, cars may not be built and assembled at automotive warehouses
and factories full of automated robots. They may be the product of more
efcient manufacturing thanks to 3D printing, which can produce relatively
inexpensive, light and efcient automobiles. One pioneer, Jim Kor, founder
of the Urbee 2, a 3D-printed vehicle, made a three-wheel, two-passenger
vehicle with plastic through Fused Deposition Modeling, or FDM. This
involves spraying molten polymer layer by layer to build the car chassis.
The entire car, which is roughly 10 feet long, took about 2,500 hours to build.
What would normally be several pieces of metal and other components in
a traditional car is now made from fewer and larger pieces that result in
a lighter vehicle. And a car with less weight can use fuel more efciently.
Vehicles that are made through 3D printing may be the wave of the future,
potentially revolutionizing automobile construction.
Protect vehicles in hot conditions
Dramatic fluctuations in
temperature can wreak
havoc on automobiles.
While cars and trucks are
designed to be reliable
under various conditions,
sometimes the weather
can get the best of even
the most reliable vehicle.
Many people associate car
troubles with cold weather.
However, cars are
susceptible to breakdowns
when it is hot outside.
Extreme heat adds to an
already high temperature
under the hood, requiring
ventilation and cooling
systems to work that
much harder. Batteries,
al ternators, starters,
fan motors, and cooling
systems are particularly
vulnerable to high heat.
Its easy for a car to
overheat and breakdown.
Proper mai ntenance
and some hot weather
guidelines can keep
drivers safe and on the
road when temperatures
soar, whether drivers are
going on a quick ride or an
extended road trip.
Be sure the radiator is
working properly and
is lled with uid at all
times. This helps prevent
overheating, which can
strand a vehicle on the
side of the road.
Hot temperatures cause
items to expand, such
as the air molecules
inside of the tires. Make
sure the tires are properly
inated so blowouts do not
occur.
Keep up-to-date with
oil changes and other
routine maintenance.
Vehicles that are well
maintained are less likely
to be susceptible to heat
strain.

Tire maintenance an
important
safety precaution
Tires are the link between a vehicle and
the roadway, and tire quality has a direct
impact on the performance and safety
of an automobile. But tire maintenance
is easy to overlook. However, ignoring
tire maintenance can threaten driver and
passenger safety and make a vehicle
operate inefciently.
Steering, breaking ability and traction are
all governed by good tires. Worn tread
can result in longer stopping times and
make it difcult to brake immediately in
an emergency situation. Although driving
tends to be the primary culprit behind worn
down tires, sometimes bald or unevenly
worn out tread is indicative of a larger
problem, such as a misaligned wheelbase,
improperly aligned tires or tires that are
underinflated. The following are some
common problems associated with tires
and how to address these issues should
they arise.
Blowouts
Worn tire treads increase the risk of
punctures, which can lead to blowouts.
Bald tires also may blowout as a result
of friction on roadways that is met with
minimal rubber. Getting caught on the side
of the road with a tire blowout can be a
hassle, so routinely check tire treads and
replace tires accordingly.
Tread depth
Average new tires on cars usually start with
10/32 inch to 11/32 inch of original tread
depth. When tread reaches a depth of 2/32
inch, they are considered worn out. There
are different ways to gauge tread depth.
Insert a penny into the tread groove with
Lincolns head upside down and facing
you. If you can see all of Lincolns head,
it is time to replace the tires. Another coin
test is to insert a quarter into the groove. If
the tread touches Washingtons head, you
have at least 4/32 inch of tread left. Dont
have any currency on hand? Then look at
the treadwear indicator bar molded into the
tires. When these bars become ush with
the adjacent ribs of the tire, the tires should
be replaced.
Alignment
According to the Rubber Manufacturers
Association, improper alignment causes
rapid or uneven treadwear. Tires should be
aligned and balanced periodically to avoid
irregular wear and having to replace tires
prematurely.
Tread pattern
Tires feature different tread patterns
depending on the brand of tire. They may be
directional, asymmetrical, nondirectional,
and directional/asymmetrical. When
purchasing replacement tires, it is
adviseable to match the tread pattern
to the existing tires. This helps enhance
the performance of the car. In fact,
some newer cars require tread to match.
Mismatched treads may cause problems
with transmission shifting or impact control
and steadiness.
Tire pressure
Underination of tires can cause failure,
stress and irregular wear. Underinated
tires also may contribute to loss of control
that leads to accidents. Always maintain
the manufacturers recommendations for
the correct pressure, which should be
adjusted based on the temperature.
Tires should undergo the same inspection
and maintenance as other parts of the
vehicle. Tires are a vital component to
safe driving, and routine maintenance can
prevent accidents and other problems.
Tips when driving
in rainy conditions
Rain is blamed for many accidents, but many of these
situations are largely preventable among drivers who adapt
to the weather and roadway conditions. Here are some
things to consider.
Reduced visibility occurs from wiper blades, glare
(particularly at night) and heavy downpours. When you
are unable to see the road ahead, including other vehicles,
reduce your speed. If the rain is coming down in torrents,
pull over to the side of the road and wait for a respite. Turn
on your lights to ensure you are visible to other cars on the
road.
Recognize that rain can cause slick conditions. A lm
of water develops on the roadways, and that can affect the
performance of your vehicles tires. Less traction means
the car can slip and slide. Hydroplaning, or coasting on the
surface of the water, is common.
Water spraying up onto tires and brakes can
compromise braking ability. That means it could take
longer to stop under wet conditions. Do not tailgate and
leave extra room between vehicles. If you drive through a
puddle of water, pump the brakes and test them out to be
sure you can stop.
Use extra care watching out for pedestrians. A normally
observant person may be distracted by the rain, puddles
and wrangling an umbrella and veer into the path of cars.
Change wiper blades twice per year. You do not want to
be caught with shoddy wiper blades in poor conditions.

What to do when faced with
an auto recall
New cars are purchased or leased to provide
a reliable mode of transportation. But some
vehicles malfunction even when they are
fresh off of the dealership lot. Other times
manufacturers or safety watchdog groups
determine that certain cars and trucks have an
issue that requires a recall to keep roadways
safe. Vehicle recall statistics are difcult to pin
down. Thats because there is no standard rate
of recalls per year, as recalls depend on safety
statistics for particular makes and models.
For example, in 2009 more than 40 million
Toyota vehicles were recalled due to a faulty
gas pedal.
An automotive recall is how manufacturers
inform drivers that there could be something
about their cars or trucks that presents
a risk of injury or property damage. The
recall may be independently conducted
by the manufacturer or ordered by a safety
group, such as the National Highway Trafc
Safety Administration. The recall involves
the manufacturer providing a free, safe and
effective remedy for the faulty component.
When a recall is announced, drivers may not
have to immediately visit a dealership to have
the problem corrected. Owners should wait for
an ofcial letter. The letter will narrow down
which vehicles are affected. There should be a
specic window of time presented in which the
vehicle can be repaired. Vehicle owners are
urged to pay attention to the performance of
their cars or trucks to see if they are exhibiting
any problems. If so, schedule an appointment
for repair according to the recall instructions
provided.
The notication letter should include the risk
of hazard posed by the problem as well as the
free remedy and how long the repair should
take. There also should be a description
of what an owner can do if he or she is
unable to have the problem remedied within
a reasonable amount of time and without
charge.
If repair work has been done on a vehicle prior
to knowledge of the recall, owners may be
eligible for reimbursement for their expenses,
provided they kept their receipts. While
reimbursement for damages that the defect
may have caused are not covered by recalls,
owners may be able to solicit reimbursement
privately.
The following are steps to take when informed
of a recall:
1. Contact the dealer service manager and
explain that you are inquiring about work
required as part of a recall.
2. If the manager has not remedied the
situation and provided the next steps,
contact the manufacturer, which should
be able to handle the situation.
3. If all else fails, Americans can contact the
Nati onal Hi ghway Traffi c Safety
Administration at www.recalls.gov.
Canadians can contact Transport Canada
at www.tc.gc.ca.
Vehicle safety recalls are designed to keep roadways and passengers safe.
Odometer fraud
cheats buyers
Purchasing a used vehicle carries some
risks. A used car buyer may not know
the complete history of the vehicle or if
any shortcuts were taken regarding its
maintenance. One increasingly common
problem preowned vehicle buyers are
running into is odometer fraud.
Consumers are estimated to lose billions
of dollars due to odometer fraud, according
to The National Highway Trafc Safety
Administration. Odometer tampering is
a serious crime that can fool buyers into
believing a vehicle has far fewer miles on
it than it really does. Sellers are able to
fraudulently market cars and trucks at higher
prices based on lower odometer readings.
People also may able to circumvent mileage
quotas on leased vehicles by turning back
the odometer.
The U.S. Office of Odometer Fraud
Investigations has seen an escalation in this
type of illegal activity. Increased demand for
low-mileage used cars has made odometer
tampering more protable. The Consumer
Federation of America estimates one in 10
cars have had their odometer rolled back.
According to CARFAX Vehicle History
Reports, clocking or spinning an
odometer is relatively easy to do. While
older cars had to have the odometer dial
turned back by machine or manually,
todays digital dashboards enable crooks
to reprogram digital odometers using
inexpensive software. Many consumers do
not learn of odometer fraud until it is too late.
Digital odometer fraud is difcult to detect
because there are no moveable parts that
can appear manipulated. Much like a hacked
computer is often discovered too late, so,
too, is a tampered odometer. However,
there are some steps consumers can take
to protect themselves from odometer fraud.
Compare the mi l eage on the
odometer to the mileage listed on
mai nt enance or i nspect i on
r ecor ds. Check oi l - change
stickers on windows as well.
Look for inconsistent wear and
tear on the vehicle compared to
the miles on the odometer. An
older car will have wear on the
gas, break and clutch pedals. A
vehicle with fewer than 20,000
miles should have its original tires.
Check the mileage listed on the
title with the odometer. If the
mileage notation is hard to read,
this may indicate fraud.
Request a vehicle history report to
det er mi ne whet her odomet er
rol l back took pl ace. Thi s wi l l
match up the mileage reading
according to the VIN number.
If the guage on a mechanical
odomet er i s cr ooked or
mi sal i gned, thi s may i ndi cate
tampering.
Odometer tampering is illegal. If the vehicle
was sold with an altered odometer, the
dealer or private seller could be liable. If
others are responsible, it is the sellers
responsibility to locate them. Unfortunately,
rollbacks are usually done by a third party,
removed enough from the seller as not to
incriminate the person. This frequently
makes prosecution difcult. It is up to the
buyer to take proactive steps to avoid
odometer fraud.

Topics to discuss before
hiring your next mechanic
Few decisions weigh as heavily on automobile
owners as their choice of mechanic. A good
mechanic goes a long way toward ensuring drivers
and their passengers stay safe on the road and
that those drivers vehicles perform at their peak for
years to come. Thats an important role to play, and
its why many drivers acknowledge that choosing
a mechanic is a decision that should not be taken
lightly.
Rest assured you dont need to be a car guy or
gal to nd a trustworthy and talented mechanic.
You might just need to open a dialogue with a
prospective mechanic, discussing a handful of
topics that can help you feel more comfortable and
know you have made the right choice in automotive
service provider once a nal decision has been
made.
Certication
Certication can go a long way toward helping
drivers nd mechanics they can trust. The National
Institute for Automotive Service Excellence
was founded in 1972 and continues to work to
improve the quality of automotive service and
repair by testing automotive technicians and
certifying those who live up to or exceed ASE
standards. An ASE-certied technician should
have his or her credentials readily available to
prospective customers, and these credentials list
each professionals area of certication. When
shopping for a new mechanic, make sure that he
or she is ASE-certied. In addition, discuss with
the mechanic his or her work history, including any
additional areas of expertise.
Pricing policies
Many mechanics offer free estimates, but that
should not be taken for granted. When bringing a
car in for an estimate, drivers should conrm with
the mechanic who will conduct the examination if
the estimate is free or if they will be charged an
inspection fee.
In addition to any fees regarding estimates, drivers
should also inquire about labor costs and the
payment policies at the facility. Labor can be quite
expensive, so its best that you know these rates
in advance of any repairs being conducted on your
vehicle. Its also important to get a rundown of
the company payment policies, especially if your
vehicle is in need of potentially costly repairs. You
dont want the bill to shock you once the work has
been completed, so dont hesitate to be inquisitive
before leaving a car at the garage.
Parts
Replacing parts on a vehicle is a cause for
concern for many drivers, and rightfully so.
Consumer advocacy groups have exposed many
mechanics who pass off used auto parts as new
parts, charging their customers new part prices
along the way. While theres no way drivers can
guarantee they wont fall victim to such criminal
behavior, they can inquire about company policies
regarding vehicle parts. Does the garage even
install used parts? If so, do they let drivers choose
either new or used parts before any work is
done? If the garage only uses new parts, ask for
parts with solid warranties, so if the part must be
replaced, you wont have to pay for it again.
Documentation
The preowned vehicle market is thriving, and
drivers who take care of their vehicles have earned
the right to reap their rewards for being good
owners when it comes time to sell the car. When
interviewing prospective mechanics, ask if they are
willing to provide detailed documentation of any
work they do on your vehicle. Such documentation
can then be shared with prospective buyers when
you want to sell the car, and it also serves as a
way to keep the garage accountable for all the
work they have done on the car throughout your
relationship.
