Job Description Teacher English as a Second Language MLES Overview Maple Leaf Educational Systems (MLES) is the rst

t and largest oshore education provider accredited by the Ministry of Education, Province of British Columbia, Canada. Our ve BC accredited high schools and two foreign nationals schools currently enroll over 5400 students at campuses in Dalian, Wuhan, Tianjin, Chongqing and Zhenjiang. Our Chinese curriculum elementary and middle schools in these cities and in Luoyang and Ordos enroll more than 5000 students. MLES is a comprehensive, integrated educational system with over 30 schools from pre-school to high school oering both Canadian and Chinese graduation diplomas for grades 10 12. Planning is currently underway for the opening of new high school programs in Shanghai, Luoyang and other locations in the near future. Our educational philosophy is based on providing a blend of the best of eastern and western educational practice. Our students are primarily PR China nationals. Approximately 7% of our student population is made up of international students from over 20 nationalities. The primary motivation of students in MLES schools is to achieve an internationally recognized high school diploma and qualify for admission to a western university. Since 1999 our graduates have accessed over 350 universities in 20 countries worldwide, primarily in Canada and the USA. Our students enter the system with varied English abilities, ranging from beginning to intermediate. Position Overview ESL is an important component of our educational system, preparing our students at all levels to meet the challenges of the all-English high school program. MLES has made a commitment to increase the number of hours each week that students study English and to ensure that qualied native speakers teach at least 50% of these classes. MLES currently employs over 300 Canadian teachers and administrators. Over 40 of these are TESL qualied ESL teachers and native speakers of English. ESL teacher are employed to teach students acquiring English language at all levels. Our BC Program schools operate on the semester system. Teaching contracts are typically for two years beginning on August 16th for semester one. We also hire new teachers in February for second semester based on new student intakes and course demand. 1

Typical Duties Duties vary depending on whether the teaching assignment is at the elementary school, middle school or high school level but in call cases include: Planning, organizing and preparing classes, including developing detailed lesson plans Developing learning materials that support the learning objectives and planned activities Instructing ESL classes to groups of up to 25 students using a variety of active and engaging teaching strategies/learning activities and student assessment methods Managing the classrooms effectively including maintaining good student discipline and supporting the discipline standards and rules of the School Assisting in the provision of daily supervision of students as required or assigned Contributing to the Schools extracurricular program and participating in other school activities such as proofreading of English letters or documents, serving as a judge for English contests, receiving visitors, and generally attending weekend ceremonies as required by the School. Demonstrating exibility in meeting MLES and students changing requirements as conditions may require over time

Employment Conditions Conditions of employment, including salary level, benets and work expectations are outlined in detail in the contract. General terms include: The normal workload consists of a nine hour school day, including student supervision and lunch break, ve days per week, over approximately 190 days in the academic year At the pre-school, elementary and middle school levels ESL teachers deliver approximately twenty--ve hours of classroom instruction per week At the High School level in the Language Elective Program teachers provide three 70 minute blocks of instruction and one block as substitute teacher for the BC Program each day, or may be assigned otherwise as determined by the ESL Director and BC Principal Participation is expected in professional development days scheduled prior to the rst school day and at other times during the school year, as specied in the Schools calendar or as determined by the BC Principal and/or the Director of the ESL Program. Annual vacations follow the Chinese calendar with statutory holidays on National Day in October and Labour Day in May. The government species three days as holiday and MLES creates a weeklong holiday by working compensatory days in advance and adding two additional days. Compensatory days are worked on weekends. Dates vary from year to year. Additionally the schools close for 5 weeks over the annual winter holiday and again for approx. 6 weeks in the summer.

Documented qualifications must include: University graduation at the Bachelors level ESL Teacher Training Certification TESL, TEFL, CELTA, etc. minimum 100 2

hours of coursework and practicum time from an accredited ESL training institution British Columbia Teachers Certificate, if applicable Certified criminal record check
