encouraged to get involved in this important process. Nominating committees are not formed or appointed, they are elected by the PTAs membership. The nominating committee is tasked with slating nominees for your PTAs elected positions for the upcoming year. But it is every members right to identify and recruit new leadership for your PTA. Do you know someone who would make an excellent leader for your PTA? Have you encouraged them to consider an ocer or chair position or committee membership? Have you considered serving in any of these positions yourself? Your PTAs bylaws identify the ocer positions for your PTA, the composition of your PTAs executive board, and some of the responsibilities. The bylaws also stipulate the month the nominating committee is elected and the month that elections are held. Once elected, the nominating committee does more than just contact current board members. The opportunity for everyone is there: board members, classroom or workroom volunteers, parents, faculty, all members, community members, and you! The nominating committee should use all the PTAs publicity resources and connections to invite members to become involved in the leadership of your PTA. Its always helpful if information is provided describing the dierent positions and available opportunities, from ocers, to chairs, to committee membership. The nominating committee can also seek individuals they feel would be good for the elected positions such as individuals with specic talents, skills, knowledge, and experience. The committee will select the candidate that they feel is most qualied for each position. This slate is then presented to the members for their consideration. At the election meeting, the Nominating Committee Chair will present the slate to the membership. Additional candidates may be nominated from the oor at that time and elections conducted. All elected ocers must be current members of the PTA prior to assuming their positions at the end of the school year. As a member, there are multiple ways you can get involved! Exercise your membership rightsnominate, vote! Bringing new leadership into your PTA provides new ideas, new insight, and renewal. And its crucial to the sustainability of your PTA. So get informed, get involved, and contact your nominating committee today!
