What are sanctions? Sanctions: A threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule Abides by strict guidelines in order to keep collegiate athletics for educational and amateur purposes Intense consequences if rules are broken
Examples: fines, suspensions, forfeit of games, loss of championships etc. - Oj Mayo recruiting violation case
Oj Mayo Case
Supposedly received compensation to attend USC prior to playing (2008) Receiving gifts therefore made him ineligible to play college athletics Retracted winning games(2008-09), forfeited post-season (2009-2010)
Consequences of Sanctions
Causes extreme negative reputation for university as a whole Slows down the development and furtherance of an athletic program Loss of championships, games, and individual players accomplishments Affects future recruiting opportunities for the university
