Brent Andrus B#S$%&% A'ril $(, )%$& Business Owners Refusing Service to Gays On *hursday e+ruary )%th, )%$& a +ill was 'assed which would change the lives of many, *he Ari-ona !egislature gave final a''roval on the +ill which allows +usiness owners to refuse service to gays, .emocrats were e/tremely em+arrassed a+out this 'ro'osal and called it 0state1sanctioned discrimination,2 *he +ill is stressed to +e a+out religious freedom, not a+out discrimination, 0*he +ill allows any +usiness, church or 'erson to cite the law as a defense in any action +rought +y the government or individual claiming discrimination, 3t also allows the +usiness or 'erson to see" an in4unction once they show their actions are +ased on a sincere religious +elief and the claim 'laces a +urden on the e/ercise of their religion2 5*he Associated 6ress7, *here have +een numerous cases concerning +usiness and the rights of gay 'eo'le such as8 the +a"er in Colorado who would not ma"e a ca"e for the cele+ration of a gay marriage, the Boy Scouts of America not allowing gay men to +e leaders, a 9ew :e/ico 'hotogra'her who was sued after refusing to ta"e wedding 'ictures for a gay cou'le, among many others, *he issue here is whose rights should we 'rotect; Should we +e willing to allow +usiness owners to discriminate against gay 'eo'le for their se/ual orientation; Or would it +e more acce'ta+le to tell +usiness owners they have to serve anyone and everyone regardless of their se/ual orientation; When loo"ing at +oth sides of the argument, it is hard to tell who is 0right,2 rom a gay 'ersons 'ers'ective, it would +e highly offensive to not +e served +ecause of se/ual 'references, 3t could +e annoying seeing every other 'erson +eing served, +esides yourself +ecause you are with someone of the same se/, On the other hand, it is hard, if not im'ossi+le to se'arate +usiness and religion, *he +usiness'erson is the same 'erson at his church as he is at his +usiness, 3t would +e difficult to live +y one standard at wor" and a com'letely different standard outside of wor", *here are two sides of this issue, Who is to say which is the more ethical side; *he !egislature made a +ig decision on e+ruary )%th allowing +usiness owners to refuse service to gays, Was it the right decision; References
