1. Describe the organizations mission, goals, programs/services.

Grill for God, G4G Ministries, Inc., is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization based in Statesville, NC
whose goal is to reach out into the Iredell community and beyond by being the hands and feet
of Jesus and showing Gods love through meeting the needs of others, feeding people physically
and spiritually. The organization began in 2008 when employees of Holland Transfer/Harveys
Holdings, Inc., and their families came together to grill donated hotdogs and hamburgers,
feeding the men at the Priority House Mens Shelter. At the end of the day the employees and
their families felt there was need to expand the feeding further, thus eventually forming the
original organization, Grill for God.

Sub-ministries followed: Grill for God, Garden for God, and Gleaning for God. Kids Growing
Greens is their newest project and is an exciting extension idea stemming from the Garden for
God program that donated land and supplies for growing vegetables to donate healthy produce
for those in need in the Iredell community. G4G Ministries, Inc. has enjoyed much success in
providing thousands of dollars in food, school supplies, personal supplies, and well as spiritual
help through our ministries.

Mission statement is: G4G Ministries, Inc. is committed to glorify God by serving the least, the
lost, and the last of North Carolina through various ministry efforts. All programs for G4G
Ministries, Inc. are for the glory of God and the furthering of His Kingdom.

2. Provide a description of the project including key strategies, timeline for project.
Kids Growing Greens is a project created to fill the needs of elementary school children by
providing an interactive hands on experience connecting science and nutrition by planting
seeds and nurturing them into plants. Data shows the correlation and effectiveness of children
being more apt to eat healthy produce when they learn to grow plants and are responsible for
nurturing them. G4G Ministries, Inc. is investing in the children of Iredell County to improve
nutrition, teach life skills, awareness, and potential solutions for the growing obesity problem in
children. The program will be working with the science teachers and 3
rd
graders of Pressley
Elementary School. Land owned by Steve Harvey, the Founder of G4G Ministries, Inc., next to
the school will be utilized for this project. A 4H Gardener volunteer will teach gardening skills.

Teachers will devote class time for this project on Tuesdays and Thursdays in May. From June to
August, days remain the same but hours will be 6:30-7:30 pm. Optional Saturdays include
additional 4Hvolunteers, who will design, print, and assemble the childrens comic booklet
instructions from a free website. Gardening kits, with all essentials, are provided for the children.
Pre-and post-survey/food records will be administered to participating children of Pressley
Elementary School for showing measurable achievement in the Kids Growing Greens program.
This is G4G Ministries, Inc.s first grant request, and is requested for Kids Growing Greens
program implementation, that was structured on the New York model program teaching children
the joy of gardening (http://www.nybg.org/.), but will be free of charge for all children.

3. Describe the program/need that the program will address.

Kids Growing Greens is designed to help the third grade children at Pressley Elementary School
by addressing obesity, and the financial difficulty to afford eating healthy, fresh produce. Iredell
Countys population is 163,043 with 62% being urban and 38% rural. Median income for
families in Iredell county is $49,902, in comparison to the NC state median income of $51,000.
In 2012, Iredell County reported 39,739 children under the age of 18yrs. old. The number of
overweight children in the Statesville/Iredell community is slightly higher than the NC statistics
(17.10%), according to a 2009 assessment. However, a 2011-2012 North Carolina State
assessment shows the obesity rate grew to 31%.

Children in Iredell county living in poverty was 17.9%, compared to a 22.5% NC state poverty
rate. According to Kids Count Data Center, the 2012 national child poverty level was reported to
be 23%. Iredell County does have several farmers markets to promote the availability of
purchasing local produce, but can be difficult for working parents to get to during the week in
downtown Statesville with limited operation. The Rotary Farmers Market and The Evening
Farmers Market are open a few hours on Mon.-Wed.-Thurs.-Sat., in the downtown area.

Pressley Elementary schools third grade population would be ideal to begin with since it has
only four small classes of 22 to 23 children each. The teacher to child ratio is about 2 to 11, or
one teacher and one assistant in each class to every 11 children. Also, when this is coupled with
projected additional parents and gardeners, the expectation is for the child to adult ratio to drop
down to a 1 to 4 ratio.

4. List the overall goal (s) of the program.

1) To teach the children how to plant vegetables, learn the responsibility of raising them, and
then eating them in a fun and nurturing environment-and that they taste great too!
2) To discover growing vegetables and fruits are important for our health by providing vitamins,
minerals, and fiber essential for our bodies, which also prevents obesity in children.
3) Find that nutrition is not a dirty word; its exciting when we learn where it comes from!

5. List the objectives. These should be measurable.

1) By August 1, 2014, 85% of the participating children of Pressley Elementary School will have
completed the Kids Growing Greens program, having learned the process of growing live
produce.
2) By August 1, 2014, 85% of the participating children of Pressley Elementary School will have
received harvested vegetables/fruits during the entire growing season.
3) By August 1, 2014, 60% of the participating children of Pressley Elementary School will have
increased their consumption of vegetables/fruits by at least 25% of the required daily intake for
children their ages, which is data that will be made available from the survey/food records.
4) By August 15, 2014, all survey/food records, data, and a summary report will be provided to
the Iredell-Statesville school system, the Austin Foundation, and all participants of the Kids
Growing Greens program.

6. List the strategies you will utilize to reach the program objectives.

1. Discuss plan with the Iredell-Statesville School system.
2. Talk and coordinate with G4G about plot of land to utilize, as well as a meal which could be
volunteered for a longer day of planting.
4. Talk to the principle and vice principle about the benefits of teaching children to garden.
5. After getting the approval from the principle, speak with the science teachers.
6. Create a budget.
7. Print out coloring papers/booklets for children (for science class)
8. Talk to Home Depot about donating fertilizer, and a 30% discount for other materials needed.
9. Recruit volunteers from 4-H club, and G4G.
10. Coordinate time with teachers, 4-H club volunteers, and G4G volunteers.
11. Confirm number of children in classes with teachers; then purchase materials accordingly.
12. Send permission slips, and volunteer slips home with children for interested parents.
13. Organize time and place to meet with children, teachers, parents, and volunteers.
14. Administer pre-and post-surveys/food records; then compile data and summary report for
sharing success rates to the Austin Foundation at program end.

7. State how, when, and by whom an evaluation will be conducted including any reports
that will be compiled and how the evaluation will be used for program improvements.

G-4G Ministries will evaluate Kids Growing Greens to see if the objectives were met, and if
children, teachers and parents were satisfied with program. Evaluations will include:

Teacher, parent and child surveys
Childrens pre-eating and post-eating habits survey
Documentation of number of volunteers, parents and children who participated
Action plan to expand to one other school
Documentation of how much was grown and picked by the children/parents

On completion of the surveys, Kids Growing Greens will provide the Iredell-Statesville School
system with a written summary report and evaluate the overall outcome based on the surveys. All
survey results will be shared with the Austin Foundation, along with a summary report. Results
of surveys, data, and reports will also be mailed out to all program participants. All above
mentioned surveys, data, and summary reports will be provided by August 15, 2014.

8. If the program will be continued after the funding period, please specify source of
funding and commitment of your agency.

Working with the school system, Kids Growing Greens will be expanded to Cloverleaf
Elementary school with plans to begin within the 2014-2015 school year, provided funds are
raised. Grilling for God and Kids Growing Greens has planned two to four fund raisers a year
towards the commitment of sustaining this program targeted at the health and availability of
fresh produce for a larger number of children in the Iredell community. The Iredell-Statesville
school system has offered the cafeteria of Pressley Elementary School as an afterhours meeting
place during the summer season and is willing to extend additional help for the children as
needed.
