Project Graduation
Graduation fun is just around
the corner. PAGE 2
L. HABER/The Sun
On April 30, Moorestown High School hosted a college fair for students of all ages. More than 50 representatives from colleges across
the country attended the fair and gave students advice about applying to institutions of higher education. Pictured, MHS students
Joseph Murphy, John Cantwell and Ty Schneider talk to Mara Jacobs, a representative from the University of Pennsylvania.

Council
discusses
bike path
options
By L. HABER
The Sun
At the April 28 Moorestown
Council meeting the council dis-
cussed the possible implementa-
tion of bike paths in town. Coun-
cil members mentioned applying
for a grant from the state to in-
stall lanes, and though the coun-
cil did not make a decision, the
deadline to apply for a bike path
grant is June 30.
The money is there I think
its a very worthwhile endeavor to
pursue, council member Phil
Garwood said.
Roads with bike pathway in-
stallations would include New Al-
bany Road and Church Road,
among others. Officially, the
grant was mentioned as a DOT
Safe Route grant from the state.
There was a first reading and
approval of the budget, authoriz-
ing publication of the budget.
The public hearing for the official
budget was set to take place June
9, at 7:30 p.m. in the council cham-

The Sun
For the 26th year in a row, Proj-
ect Graduation will continue to
be a part of the end of the year
traditions for seniors at
Moorestown High School.
The event occurs after the actu-
al graduation ceremony on June
19, and while the exact location is
being kept a secret, the PG com-
mittee encourages all to attend.
There is a lot of excitement
leading up to the night since the
kids have no idea where they are
going its a wonderful way to
not only include all the kids, but
also to keep them safe and to
show them how much fun they
can have without drugs and alco-
hol, PG committee member and
parent volunteer Theresa Sof-
fronoff said.
Though the event is optional,
Soffronoff mentioned that in the
last four years she has been part
of the PG committee, more than
90 percent of seniors each year
have attended. Seniors seem to
enjoy the night, as it can be as
commemorative for some as grad-
uation itself.
I think they realize that it is
their last time to be together with
all of their classmates before
moving onto the next phase of
their life, Soffronoff said.
Lisa Dadino, MaryPat Murtin,
Terry Testa and Soffronoff,
among other committee mem-
bers, began gathering donations
and supplies for the festivity at
the beginning of the school year.
We began a direct appeal to
our high school parents and the
local businesses at the beginning
of the year, Soffronoff said. The
support is amazing despite the
tough financial times, this com-
munity never fails when it comes
to doing something for these
kids.
Though the venue and a wide
variety of activity and art dis-
plays for the event have already
been paid for much earlier this
year, the committee is still accept-
ing donations for prizes until Me-
morial Day.
When the kids engage in the
activities throughout the evening,
they earn tickets that they can
put into a pot with the hopes of
winning that particular prize,
Soffronoff explained.
The items mentioned as most
in demand for the student draw-
ing include iPads, iMacs, new
game systems and gift cards to

well.
With the cards DerHagopian

The committee is still looking
for extra volunteers to help out
the night of the event. To volun-
teer, please email Maria Giar-
ratano at Maria.g@foxroach.com.
Though there are set events
and a plan in place for the Project
Graduation party to go on with-
out any trouble, there is no cen-
tral theme of the event, except for
togetherness among seniors who
will soon part ways.
No overall theme just unity.
Its a graduation party no one
is left out, Soffronoff said.
Despite the night of gradua-
tion compelling most seniors to
feel a variety of tough emotions,
the PG crew has high hopes that
the party will make everyone feel
more excited and less nervous
about their journeys from high
school to the real world.
Besides the unbelievable
amount of activities the kids
can participate in at these sites,
I believe the prizes they have a
chance to win really keep
their energy high, Soffronoff
said.

Under God in Pledge of
Allegiance is just damaging
Not everything in American history
should be cherished, including many of
our traditions.
This includes the Pledge of Allegiance,
and not just the, "under God.
Although, you mentioned that students
are allowed to opt out of the pledge, which
was never made clear to me in school. In
fact, I didn't know until I read every page of
the student handbook.
Most students don't know that they can
opt out, and it seems like a pretty impor-
tant requirement when you're in kinder-
garten and every other person is saying it,
including your teacher, who is almost as
revered as parents to little children. So,
atheist and humanist children may feel
that they have no other option than "under
God.
Every child should have the chance to
grow up and discover their own spirituali-
ty, but even when that isn't possible, reli-
gion is left to the family.
Saying "under God" in schools shows
children that God is real and that this is an
accepted fact by all adults, including the
government. Also, teaching blind patriot-
ism to our children is just damaging. Most
elementary school kids aren't very politi-
cally inclined, besides occasionally parrot-
ing what they've heard their parents say.
Why ask them to declare their undying
love for a country whose politics they
haven't even learned about?
Why ask them to say the words "liberty
and justice for all" when that has yet to be-
please see LETTERS, page 12
C
hange can be hard to accept at
times, and so, too, can reality.
So its no surprise that the re-
sults of a recent poll show that more
residents in New Jersey oppose merg-
ing their town with another than sup-
port it.
Thats a change from four years ago,
when a Rutgers-Eagleton poll found
that more than half of the states resi-
dents favored mergers. Analysts say
the change in heart can be attributed
to Gov. Christies 2 percent cap on
property tax increases.
But while Christies cap has worked
for limiting tax increases, for now, we
dont know how long that will last.
Christie has been pushing for munici-
pal mergers for a few years now, and
he may turn up the heat on towns
soon.
You see, the state is in financial
trouble. Once again, revenues fell very
short of projections, this time by $800
million. Christie deflected blame, say-
ing many states overestimated tax rev-
enues, partly because wealthy people
began holding onto their money once
federal temporary tax cuts expired.
That may be true, but it doesnt
change the reality: New Jersey is in
the red, big time, and it may require
some serious budget cuts to get out.
Throw in the fact that were less than
two months from the end of the fiscal
year, and we could have a crisis on our
hands.
That brings us back to the issue of
consolidation. The state isnt getting
any better when it comes to taxes. So
while municipal tax increases have
stabilized over the last few years due
to the cap, the state as a whole collects
the most in property taxes on aver-
age a whopping $8,000 per home.
Taxes may have stabilized, but they
arent likely to go down any time
soon unless something is done on the
local level.
And that something could be con-
solidation.
Residents who are fearful of such a
move because of the lack of control,
lack of small-town identity, potential
compromise of services, safety and ed-
ucation among other issues can
look no further than Princeton as an
example. The municipality just ended
its first full year of consolidation be-
tween the former Princeton Borough
and Princeton Township, and by all ac-
counts, it was a success.
The consolidated municipality saw
a more than 4 percent reduction in the
budget because of the merger, while
not compromising on safety, security,
education and other services.
So why not follow Princetons lead?
Why not find a willing partner to
merge with, share services with and
save some money? Its an idea that
might become a requirement, instead
of an option, sometime soon.
Is it time for consolidation?
You may not like the idea, but it may be the best, and only, choice

towns to save on taxes? Share your

ZANE CLARK/The Sun
Students from Cinnaminson, Delran, Mt. Laurel, Moorestown and more worked in teams to complete puz-
zling games during the annual Brain Games event at Cinnaminson Memorial School. The inter-district
event had students from gifted programs work together with students they had never met before to pro-
mote teamwork and critical thinking. In the Eyewitness event, students used the process of elimination
to pick a suspect out of a line of photos using vague descriptions from different witnesses. For the com-

come a reality in the entire histo-
ry of our nation?
I would go further than just
dropping the McCarthy Era relic,
and make it known that the
pledge is optional, and that it is
OK to criticize your government.
Because patriotism isn't about
blind faith; it's about working to
make your nation a better place.
Jamerica Bevel
Sticking to senority
policy isnt helpful
At the end of June, the Board
of Education will eliminate the
night custodian positions at
Moorestown High School.
This is not a bad idea. It will
mean a fairly substantial savings
for the taxpayers. The high school
is the last school in the district to
not have a private company per-
form the duties of the night cus-
todians.
Part of the reason that this ac-
tion was taken was because of the
substandard work ethic and poor
attendance record of the present
in-house employees.
However, there is a catch.
Due to the Moorestown Educa-
tion Association union policy of
bumping the workers with less
seniority and keeping the ones
with greater seniority, many of
the night workers who are being
laid off will be given the opportu-
nity to take over the positions of
the day-time custodians at the
middle school, UES and high
school.
As a result, the same employ-
ees who precipitated their own re-
moval will be placed in positions
of the day custodians.
This is a travesty for several
reasons. The employees with the
highest seniority are also the
ones that have the worst atten-
dance. Some of these employees
have been absent many weeks in
one year by maxing out on sick
days, and using short-term dis-
ability and workmans compensa-
tion.
Because of the work history
and age of the workers who are
positioned to replace the daytime
workers, it is questionable
whether they will be able to per-
form the duties of the day staff,
and whether there will be ade-
quate staffing during the day to
provide needed custodial services
to students, teachers and staff.
In contrast, the present day
staff custodians who will be re-
placed have excellent work histo-
ries. They lose very little time
other than their vacation and hol-
iday time, often coming in on hol-
idays when needed.
The required work of the day
staff can be more physically de-
manding, and includes perform-
ing many more duties than the
night staff.
Also, the day staff interacts
with the teachers and students,
and the night staff does not. It is
more difficult to cover for the day
staff when they are not at work
than it is to cover the night staff.
For some reason, the MEA
chooses to overlook all of the
above, and stick to their seniority
policy.
I believe this is a bad deal for
the day custodians, the schools af-
fected, the students, parents and
the taxpayers. We will be paying
top dollar for workers who dont
perform, and lose workers who
arent costing as much, and per-
form their jobs admirably.
This is absurd. Please let the
MEA know that this is unaccept-
able for all concerned.

bers in the new Town Hall, at 111

There was also a first reading
of an ordinance to exceed the mu-
nicipal budget appropriation lim-
its to establish a cap bank.
Township manager Scott
Carew talked in detail about one
budgetary item, involving the
purchase of new police vehicles.
Carew mentioned that sedans in-
hibited officers from properly re-
sponding to different types of
emergencies this past winter.
Different towns have different
reasons to buy vehicles, Carew
said.
If approved, the purchase of a
new Ford truck would take about
$32,000 out of the operating budg-
et.
Radios and five other police ve-
hicles were mentioned as items
that may also be purchased with-
in the next year. No official action
was made regarding vehicle pur-
chases.
The issue of banning smoking
in public parks in town garnered
public comment, and some debate
among council members.
While some residents men-
tioned the issue of sports coaches
smoking during games and
matches throughout
Moorestown, others mentioned a
smoking ban as being an exces-
sive invasion of privacy.
Council ultimately decided
that the issue of a smoking ban
would be further discussed and
acted upon in the future.
If this was a township pro-
gram thats one thing. There is
no doubt we will enforce a ban so
coaches are not smoking, Carew
said.
In other news:
There was a moment of si-
lence for resident Harry Koons.
Any community event, he was
there its with heavy hearts we
have to say goodbye to Harry,
Mayor Chris Chiacchio said.
Student officers from
Moorestown High School were
honored for their work in organ-
izing class events and helping fel-
low students. The MHS student
government officers were praised
for acting as the leaders of their
grade levels.
Were honoring these kids for
stepping up and being leaders in
their own right, Chiacchio said.
April was recognized as
Autism Awareness Month. Coun-
cil agreed that its members and
others in the community will con-
tinue to learn more about Autism
to better serve affected residents.
Autism is something that is
becoming more and more preva-
lent and its not just affecting
individuals, its affecting our
whole community, council mem-
ber Victoria Napolitano said.
The resignation of Susan Am-
brose was authorized. Ambrose
was part of the Recreation Advi-
sory Committee.
The May 12 council meeting
was cancelled. The next council
meeting will take place on May 19
at 7:30 p.m. in the new Town Hall.

Friends of mine had been looking for a home in Moorestown for nearly a year w/ very specific criteria. A home
walking distance fromdowntown they could customize to make their own. I knew there was a possibility the owner
might want to sell this home, so I made contact to let them know I had a potential buyer. When we through we
could see the home could suit their needs. They had the vision to see what this home had the potential to be & fell
in love with it. We began negotiations while Canton Custom Homes began pricing renovations. Everything was
worked out, and now we get to save a beautiful home on Moorestowns Main St by restoring this gemto its original

Moorestown Friends School
presented three awards at the
Dinner Among Friends on Friday,
May 2, as part of the schools an-
nual Alumni Weekend.
This years recipient of the
Alumni Association Service
Award is Grace Kennedy Black-
burn.
One of the highest honors the
school can bestow, the award is
presented to individuals who
have enhanced the quality of life
in the MFS community through
loyalty and personal commit-
ment.
Blackburns career at MFS
spanned nearly 40 years, begin-
ning with her employment as a
math teacher in 1964. While con-
tinuing her teaching, she also
served as middle school director
from 1970 to 1977, and as director
of Studies for the middle and
upper school from 1977 to 1978.
After teaching in the Willingboro
School District for several years,
Blackburn rejoined the MFS fac-
ulty in 1985, and chaired the math
department from 1985 to 1994.
She joined the MFS School
Committee Board of Trustees in
2003, serving through 2013. Now
residing at Medford Leas with her
husband Dale, Blackburn has
been a gracious liaison between
MFS and alumni, parents of
alumni, and former faculty mem-
bers.
This years joint recipients of
the Alice Stokes Paul Merit
Award are Peter Reagan from the
class of 1964, and Bonnie Green-
field Reagan from the class of
1964.
This award honors members of
the MFS community who exem-
plify the qualities of honesty, in-
tegrity, fairness, and service, in
addition to excellence in their
chosen field.
Peter Reagan started at MFS in
prekindergarten, and Bonnie
Greenfield Reagan came to the
school in sixth grade. They at-
tended Haverford and Bryn Mawr
Colleges, respectively, and after
their wedding, they both earned
masters degrees from Reed Col-
lege.
After working in education for
a number of years, they each
eventually earned a doctor of
medicine, and transitioned to
helping others through medical
work.
Peter helped establish Portland
Family Practice in 1983, and Bon-
nie joined the practice after grad-
uating from medical school. Bon-
nie also served as chair of the
ethics committee at Adventist
Medical Center in Portland for 12
years, and she helped develop
standards for the Oregon Death
with Dignity Act.
In 2010, Peter received the
Lewis Carpenter Award from
Oregon Health and Science Uni-
versity Family Medicine, and
Bonnie was named Oregon Fami-
ly Doctor of the Year.
The Reagans volunteer activi-
ties have ranged from coaching
soccer and teaching to advocating
for end-of-life care.
Now retired from their family
practice in Portland, Bonnie fo-
cuses on her role as board presi-
dent for Bravo Youth Orchestras,
and Peter continues his work
with end-of-life care in his role as
a regional medical director for
Compassion and Choices.
The Young Alumni Award, es-
tablished in 2005, is awarded to re-
cent MFS graduates who have dis-
tinguished themselves through
meritorious achievement or ex-
ceptional service to the communi-
ty.
Recipients of this award
demonstrate commitment to the
values and spirit of MFS after
graduation, by pursuing chal-
lenges and upholding the Quaker
values of simplicity, peace, in-
tegrity, community, equality, and
stewardship.
This years honoree is Palav
Babaria of the 1999 MFS class.
Babarias passion for health
has led her to work in South
Africa, India, and Haiti.
She earned her undergraduate
degree in Southeast Asian Stud-
ies at Harvard University, where
she studied Londons immigrant
populations and participated in
researching the experiences of Is-
lamic high school students in the
Boston area.
At Yale Medical School,
Babaria wrote a qualitative study
of womens gendered encoun-
ters in medical education, enti-
tled Im Too Used to It.

By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
It was the Blue Braniacs
against the The Brown Brains
against the Burlington Brains
and more when more than 120
fourth-grade students from nine
school districts throughout
Burlington County put on their
thinking caps and participated in
the annual Brain Drain Games at
Cinnaminson Memorial School
on April 30.
Hosted by the Western Burling-
ton County Regional Consortium,
an association of educators that
teaches gifted and talented stu-
dents throughout nine Burling-
ton County schools, the Brain
Drain Games gave students the
chance to test their knowledge
through a series of thought pro-
voking puzzles and games.
This year, students from Cin-
naminson, Delran, Mt. Laurel,
Moorestown, Pennsauken, Maple
Shade, Riverton, Hainesport and
Palmyra competed.
With only one or two students
from the same town on any given
team, the students grew not only
their minds but their teamwork,
communication and friendship-
making skills.
The activities involved puzzles
such as using the process of elim-
ination to pick a suspected crimi-
nal out of a line of photos with
only vague witness descriptions,
using straws and straw wrappers
to construct a bridge between two
chairs that could support the
heaviest weight, and even getting
every student on a team to walk
through a giant spider web with-
out touching the web or using the
same opening more than once.
Students moved from room to
room to participate in each activi-
ty. Presenters graded the teams
on how well they accomplished
their given task, and chaperones
asked the students questions
about how they might have
worked better together or what
they might do differently at the
next activity.
Elaine Mendelow, a retired Cin-
naminson teacher and special ac-
tivities coordinator for the dis-
trict, said the games were meant
to promote skills beyond basic
learning that would help the kids
once they were older and in situa-
tions that take place outside
school.
It takes a lot of teamwork and
problem solving, Mendelow
said. Thats what were really
looking for now in education. Not
just great memory, and not just
regurgitating information and
facts, but getting people to work
in harmony and form cooperative
groups.

With the teams composed of
kids from different schools,
Mendelow said the kids gained
the skills to quickly work with
new and different people to ac-
complish a mutual goal.
Thats what business is all
about as well, working, communi-
cating, listening to other kids
ideas, Mendelow said. Those
are the people theyre finding the
most successful in the business
world because they know how to
negotiate with other people and
they know how to make eye con-
tact all of those kinds of skills
that are so important here.
Cinnaminson School District
Superintendent Salvatore Illuzzi
was also at the event to watch the
students compete. He said Cin-
naminson was proud to host the
annual event.
Were very proud to host it ob-
viously, Illuzzi said. Its some-
thing that makes a good place just
a little bit more special.
Illuzzi also said the district was
lucky to have someone such as
Mendelow, and the representa-
tives from the other districts have
always complimented Mendelow
for the work she does.
In each of the programs she
does for us, theres the motivation
of making the children more
aware of community and its re-
sources and working together for
good, Illuzzi said. I think in
many ways thats a very fortunate
thing for our school district.
One visitor from outside Cin-
naminson was chaperone and
parent Robin Eder of Delran. She
was at the event with her daugh-
ter and said it was great for kids
because it was exciting and chal-
lenging, and her daughter and the
other kids had been looking for-
ward to it for months.
I think its great, Eder said.
Id never heard of it before, but
every year they get to do it and all
the kids come together, meeting
new kids and seeing how they
work together. It gives them confi-
dence to be able to work with
other kids who are not their
friends, so they can walk into any
situation.
