Taking Sides assignment: Sec 2
Healthy Eating
April 9, 2014
1. The major thesis of the yes side is the fine line between including food that are
supposedly healthy in a diet and eating only the deemed healthy foods. Lindsey Getz is making
the point that Orthorexia is a probable eating disorder where there is a desire to have the perfect
diet.
2. The major thesis on the No side was based on the American diet and its flaws. Portions
and large calorie intakes have become part of a normal American every day diet and has led to
obesity and diabetes.
3. The first fact presented by the yes side was the reality of a 10 year old girl who was
terrified of Trans fats. This was a fact that backed up Getz in her point that orthorexia is a real
disorder. The second fact on the No side was the truth about an 18 year old girl who lost a
significant amount of weight because she took out so many essential nutrients out of her diet,
displaying the disorder of Orthorexia.
4. The first fact on the No side was the statistic Woolston showed about the percentage of
American who are overweight, which is more than sixty-six percent. The second fact Woolston
brought to the table was the average teenage boy drinks nearly 21 ounces of soda a day, which is
almost ten percent of their daily calorie intake

5. The first opinion on the yes side is when Getz states that othorexia is like other eating
disorders where it affects an individuals life. A second opinion showed on the Yes side is where
the author says that orthorexia could begin as simple eating habits and then become
uncontrollable.
6 .The first opinion identified on the No side is when the author says that an average
restaurant meal is packed with two-thousand calories, which should be enough for day for an
average person. The second opinion is when Woolston says why obesity has exploded in the last
twenty years; he blames it on portion size.
7. A fallacy on the Yes side is when Getz talk about other physicians not knowing about
orthorexia. I think this statement is misleading because she says the statement like she knows of
other physicians that do not know of the disease. She has no research to back up her statement.
8. A fallacy on the No side is when Woolston talks about two opposite diets: The western
diet and the prudent diet. I think the American diet is more diverse and isnt as black and white
as the writer leads on. Some people, like myself, eat healthy for the most and occasionally
indulge.
9. I personally feel the Yes side was interesting and seemed like a valid argument,
however, the most correct is the No side. The No side is the most correct because it had more
cold hard facts. The No side had little empirical statements compared to the Yes side.
10. The author that impressed me as being the most empirical in presenting his thesis was
the No side. This author for the most part relied on the facts to argue his statements, whereas the
Yes side contained a lot of opinion statements without any references to back them up.
11. The author that relied more on unsupported statements was the Yes side. The reason
why they may be biased in their opinion is due to the fact that the condition that isnt even
accepted by medical physicians.
