Career at Merchant Navy

The Merchant Navy mainly deals with transporting cargo and occasionally, passengers, by sea. It has different
fleets composed of Passenger Vessels, Cargo Liners, Tankers, Bulk Carriers, Car Carrier, containers as well as the
other special types of vessels. Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo across the
globe for Import & Export business.

The Merchant navy career option mainly includes the following category ;
Navigating officers (Deck side officers)
Marine engineering Officers (Engine side officers)
Crew members (To assist the officers)
Specialized officers (Electrical officer, Radio officers)

Shipping companies offer these positions on contracts for a period of 4 to 9 months. After finishing the contract
period, the officers can enjoy leave and whenever they want to join back, the company will absorb them
immediately. Presently the demands for Marine Engineers and Deck officers are high worldwide. The shipping
companies are facing great shortage for the Deck and Engine officers. Hence the trained persons are getting
immediate job opportunities all over the world.

NAVIGATING OFFICERS TEAM
They are responsible for the navigation of the Ship, the loading / discharge of cargo, radio communication and the
control / safety of the crew, and passengers. The chief navigator of the ship is the master, who decides the course
of the voyage and maneuvers the vessel. He exercises complete control over the officers, crew and any passengers
on board the ship. From the trainee cadet level, one will be promoted to captain of the ship with proper sea-
experience and further exams.

ENGINEER OFFICERS TEAM :
The ship's engineers have complete responsibility of the ship's engine room i.e., the main engine,boilers, pumps,
hydraulic fuel systems the ship's electrical generating plant and distribution system. From the trainee engineering
officer level, one will be promoted to Chief Engineer of the ship with proper sea-experience and further exams.

CREW TEAM :
The GP crew involve with all kind of day to day activities to assist either to Chief officers in Deck side or Second
Engineer in Engine side. One can get Promotion from GP crew position to Captain level or Chief Engineer level with
proper exams and sea experience. The catering crew will perform the food preparation and kitchen activities. The
specialized fitters & welders are very much needed for various types of vessels.

The fleet of ships in the Merchant Navy comprises vessels of varying sizes and categories. These include passenger
ships, cargo ships, oil/gas/chemical tankers, oilrig and other specialized vessels. These ships are owned, managed,
and operated by various private and public shipping companies. Trained, technical personnel from various
nationalities across the world man these ships. Merchant Navy, as a career, provides a unique opportunity for
visiting foreign lands and experiencing varied culture and all this, while getting paid for it! Remuneration wise,
Merchant Navy is one of the best-paid professionals in the world. What more could one ask of a career?


Career as a Deck Officer
A career at sea is both arduous and rewarding. It offers a high level of job satisfaction; a wide experience and
challenging work environment. Experienced Mariners are in great demand in various shore assignments because of
their ability to handle all types of job, their resourcefulness, sense of responsibility and ability to work under most
demanding circumstances.

A Deck officer is a very valuable and responsible member of a shipping crew. He has to navigate the ship from one
port to another in all circumstances with caution and safety at all times and maintains the equipment operated by
him in good working order. This gives him watch keeping experience and tremendous confidence. However, it must
be understood that the life of an officer is tough, and not suited for the weak hearted. But there are
compensations as well. A class III Certificated of Competency holder starts as a third officer (approx. Salary US$
3500) with prospects of becoming a Master in about 8-10 years (approx. Salary US$ 10000 - 14000) plus leave and
allowance. Following courses are conducted by Government approved training institutes.

Course Name: One year Pre-Sea Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc Nautical Science affiliated to Indian
Maritime University
Eligibility :
(a ) Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate
subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60%
(b ) B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the year,
with an average of not less than 55% of marks in the final year.

(c ) B.E./B. Tech. Degree from I.I.T. or from a college recognized by AICTE with an average of not less than 50% of
marks in the final year.
The candidates should have obtained 50% marks in English language at 10

conducted by recognized Board or any University.

Career as a Engineer Officer

control all engineering system onboard his ship, and maintain them in good working condition. This gives him
tremendous experience and confidence. However, it must be understood that the life of a Marine Engineer is

Competency holder starts as a Fourth Engineer (approx. Salary US$ 3500) with prospectus of becoming a Chief

Naval Architecture
Naval Architecture is an engineering discipline dealing with the design, construction or Maintenance of ships, boats
and all types of marine vessels and offshore structures like merchant ships, oil tankers, gas tankers, bulk carriers,
container ships, passenger ships and ferries, cruise ships, frigates, destroyers, aircraft carriers, amphibious ships,
submarines, underwater vehicles, icebreakers, offshore drilling platforms, semi-submersibles, high speed crafts,
hovercrafts, multi-hull ships, fishing boats, tugs, platform supply vessels, pilot vessels, rescue crafts, yachts,
power boats and other recreational crafts, the opportunity is immense.Naval architecture involves basic and
applied research, design, development, design evaluation and calculations during all stages of the life of a marine
vehicle. There is a huge demand for naval architects in the countries where ship building industry is in a large
format like US, Korea, Singapore, UK and Netherlands. Naval architects can not only fit in the ship building
industry but also in Naval dockyards and ship design and research centers. They are in demand both in the private
and government sectors. Ie: Surveyors in DG Shipping, Classification societies Since Naval architect is an engineer
who is responsible for the Naval architects can also join ships for on-board duty after undergoing pre-sea course
for GME (Approved by DG Shipping, Govt. Of India) and become 4th engineer.





G.P. Rating (General Purpose Rating Course)

Introduction : Shipping is continuously growing industry, and trained persons find jobs in Indian and foreign
companies. Attempts are being made to create new openings and facilitate employment of ratings. GP Rating
candidates are those who have been trained in both Deck and Engine Room duties. Such ratings may be employed
in either department according to the needs of the company. Ratings participate in seamanship activities, cargo
handling, maintenance work, operation and maintenance of machinery.

Duties of a General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) :

entry batches, all trainees seeking admission in GP Rating Course at Government approved ratings training

Trust (BES).

1. Written Test (English, Maths, and Science).
2. Physical endurance test.
3. Psychometric test (to be introduced in the next phase).

Eligibility :
10th Std 40% aggregate, Science and Mathematics and minimum 40% in English, Or I.T.I. - 2 Year Engineering
Trades from Govt. Approved Institute with minimum 50% aggregate marks in final year and minimum 40% in English
in 10th std.

Age :
17.5 to 25 years on the date of commencement of training.

Medical Fitness :
Physically fit. Vision 6/6 with normal color vision. No speech impairment (disorder) Height and Weight (Height
without shoes, weight in indoor clothing) minimum requirements: Height 157cm (5.2"), Weight 48kg (105 lbs).

SALOON RATINGS
Duties of a Saloon Rating :
As a Saloon rating youll perform a variety of jobs as well as being cook or cook/steward such as forming part of
emergency response teams involved in firefighting, security and passenger control or rescue duties. Following
courses are conducted by Government approved training institutes.

B.Sc Nautical Science (DNS)
The above program is approved by Director General of Shipping, Government of India. The design of the course is
as per the guidelines laid down by the Directorate.

This training provides a School (10 + 2) / ('A' Level) leaver sure path to become a qualified Deck Officer. The
training at Academy where apart from familiarizing him with various aspects in workshop comprising of carpentry,
plumbing, machine shop, electrical shop and hot - work. Also required to mandatory STCW Course as required for
seafarers.

On successful completion of the semester 1 & 2 Diploma in Nautical Science is awarded by INDIAN MARITIME
UNIVERSITY (IMU) on completion of the pre-sea training he undertakes the sea phase compressing of 18 months
comprising semester 3,4 & 5 of on board ship residential training along with correspondence course with INDIAN
MARITIME UNIVERSITY (IMU).

On successful completion of phase II (semester3, 4 &5) IMU will award the trainee with Advance Diploma in
Nautical Science, Trainee is required to undergo 4 months post-sea training in any training institute (2nd Mate
Function) on Successful completion of the training & 'Passing the exam he will be awarded Certificate of
Competency by Director General of Shipping and B.Sc. Degree in Nautical Science by INDIAN MARITIME
UNIVERSITY (IMU).

Eligibility / Academic Standard :
(a) Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects
with a PCM average of not less than 55% OR b) B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics
as individual subject in one of the year, with an average of not less than 50% of marks in the final year. OR (c)
B.E./B. Tech. Degree from l.l.T. or from a college recognized by AlCTE with an average of not less than 50% of
marks in the final year.
The candidates should have obtained 50% marks in English Language at 10th or 12th Std. or in the Degree
course conducted by recognized Board or any University.

Age :
Maximum 25 years.

Medical Fitness :
Medically fit with eyesight 6/6, without external aids. No color blindness.

Selection Procedure :

B.Sc Nautical Science (3 Year Course)
(Approved by Director General of Shipping, Govt. of India)

This course will lead the candidates to become the Captain of the ship. Captain of the ship is also referred as
Master mariner. On successful completion of this pre-sea training, the candidates are eligible to become nautical
Deck Cadets on board a ship. The leading international shipping companies are regularly conducting campus
interviews at our Academy for the job placement. Our Academy has achieved 100% placement record for our
cadets.

This course consists of six semesters. The B.Sc (Nautical Science) degree will be awarded by the University and
Director General of Shipping, Govt. of India on the successful completion of three years duration, the cadets will
be joining as the Trainee Navigating Officer Cadet on board ship. They will have to obtain 12 months sea
experience. On completion of 12 months sea experience, they will be promoted directly as SECOND OFFICER
without any further examinations. With further sea service & exams, they will be promoted to Chief Officer and
then becoming Captain of the ship.

Eligibility :
10+2 ('A' Levels) with Physics, Chemistry, mathematics with minimum 60% marks in PCM or B.Sc. Graduates with
55% marks in the final year, minimum 50 % marks in English at 10th or 12th level is must. Should be fluent in
written & spoken English.

Not exceeding 25 years on the date of commencement of training.

Medical Fitness :
Medically fit with eyesight 6/6, without external aids. No color blindness.

B.Tech (Marine) 4 Year Degree Course
(Approved by Director General of Shipping, Govt. of India).


This 4 years degree course duly approved by Director General of Shipping, Govt. of India and / or approved by
University. The Academy imparts comprehensive training in Marine Engineering and shipboard practice. It
comprises of academics and ship familiarization along with marine Workshop training (as per IMO modules) done at
Academy. After completion of the Course at the Academy the candidate undergoes the four basic STCW courses.
The candidate is exempted from class IV part A COC & obtains it on the basis of Academy passing out /degree
certificated. After this he goes for his Class IV Part B` written & oral examination.

Eligibility :
Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects
with a PCM average of not less than 60%(or)The candidate should have obtained with minimum of 50% marks in
English language at 10th or 12th std or in the Degree/Diploma course conducted by recognized Board or any
University, or Candidates can join 2nd year of 4-Year Marine Engineering Degree Course who have passed 3 years
Diploma Course in Mechanical / Marine / Electrical / Electrical and Electronics from the colleges approved by
AICTE or State Board of Technical Education with minimum 55% of aggregate marks in the last year of Diploma
Course.

Age :
17 to 25 years at the time joining

Medical Fitness :
Candidates should be physically fir for sea service under standard norms, with eyesight 6/12 eyes and 6/9 in better
eye, 6/18 in other eye, and with no color blindness.

Diploma Mechanical Engineer (DME) - 2 Yrs
DIPLOMA MECHANICAL ENGINEER TO JOIN AS TRAINEE MARINE ENGINEER.
A pre-sea training program for Diploma Mechanical Engineers approved by the Director
General of Shipping Government of India. This Program trains Candidates in the theory and
practice of marine Engineering and completes workshop training as per the IMO module
courses. It provides Ship owners with a ready Marine Engineer.

This 24 Months Pre-Sea courses for Diploma (Mechanical / Electrical) at the Academy imparts comprehensive
training in Marine Engineering and Shipboard Practice. It Comprises of academics and ship familiarization along
with Marine Workshop training (as per IMO modules) done at academy.
After completion of the courses at the Academy the candidate undergoes the four basic STCW course. Diploma
candidates shall appear & passes Class IV Part A COC.
Diploma candidates shall go for 6 months sailing on ship & 3 Months Preparatory course on shore. then join the
shipping company's vessels as Junior Engineers where they undergo further practical training and maintain their
TARB to ensure that the entire syllabus is covered and they get to do all tasks as prescribed & After this Diploma
candidates goes for this Class IV part B, written & oral examination.

Eligibility :
For Diploma Mechanical Engineer : DIP (Mech./Electrical) With 50% aggregate marks from AICTE approved
Universities / Colleges. Minimum 50% marks in English at 10+2 or 10th level is a must. Fluency in written and
spoken English.

Age :
Not exceeding 28 years on the date of commencement of training.

Medical Fitness : Medically fit with eyesight 6/6, with or without external aids. Maximum power permitted 2.5.No
color blindness. All candidates have to pass complete medical examination and mandatory tests prior to joining at
the Academy. Phoenix Maritime Services Pvt. Ltd. have panel of qualified doctors and requirements as per ILO
Convention 147 Seafarer's Medical Examination.

Selection Procedure :

Graduate Mechanical Engineer (Approved By NewZealand School)
These 5 months Pre-Sea courses at the Academy imparts comprehensive training in Marine Engineering and
Shipboard Practice. It Comprises of academics and ship familiarization along with Marine Workshop training (as per
IMO modules) done at academy.

After completion of the courses at the Academy the candidate undergoes the four basic STCW course. The
candidates then join the shipping company's vessels as Junior Engineers for sea time of 8 months where they
undergo further practical training and maintain their TARB to ensure that the entire syllabus is covered and they
get to do all tasks as prescribed. After this he goes for his Class III Examination at New Zealand

COURSE CONTENT:The course is conducted over 3 stages, as follows:

STAGE 1: Pre Sea Program (PSP).5-month duration, conducted in India. Upon completion, trainees will be awarded

STAGE 2: Shipboard Attachment Program (SAP) 6-months Sea going training on board merchant ships of more than
750kW propulsion power, as junior or assistant engineers. A Distance Learning Program (DLP) will have to be
completed by all the trainees during this stage.

STAGE 3: Marine Engineer Class 3 Certificate of Competency (Motor) A 6-week preparatory program leading to the
trainees obtaining their Marine Engineer Class 3 (Motor) CoC issued by Maritime New Zealand, provided they satisfy
all the assessment and other criteria. This is an IMO White List certification and accepted globally in the maritime
world.

Eligibility :
B. E. (Mech. / Elect.) or Diploma (Mech. / Elect.) from AICTE approved Universities / College. Should be fluent in
written & spoken English.

Age :
Not exceeding 26 years on the date of commencement of training.

Medical Fitness :
Medically fit with eyesight 6/6, with or without external aids. Maximum power permitted 2.5 No. colour blindness.
All candidates have to pass complete medical examination and mandatory tests prior to joining at the Academy.
