Course Overview
This course introduces the relevance of psychoanalytic ideas to education, explores
emotional factors that help and hinder the learning relationship, and promotes wellbeing
in schools.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for you if you work in the field of education in any of the
following roles, or in a related position:
teacher
head of year

special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO)

Course outline
The course consists of the following elements:
lectures and workshops
work discussion group sessions
experiential group observations
dissertation seminars
personal tutorials

Years one and two


You will attend a weekly lecture or workshop which will explore key psychoanalytic ideas
and look at their relevance to education.Topics include: observation, obstacles to
learning, racism, transition, the nature of learning across the life-span, inclusion and
exclusion, play, special needs and working with parents. In year two, you will focus on
group and institutional dynamics and explore what goes on beneath the surface of
organisations.
In work discussion groups you will present your own interactions with children and
adolescents and discuss other course members experiences within their work settings.
In your seminar groups you will work towards a better understanding of interactions, their
impact and the meaning of behaviour.This reflective space will assist you to carry on
thinking and working in troubling, unsettling and puzzling situations.

Year two
You will attend an experiential group which studies group life as it evolves. There will be
opportunities to experience the beginning of a groups life, how group processes
develop, how roles are taken up, how issues of authority and leadership are negotiated
and how a group copes with breaks and ending.You will participate as an observer of
the group, attempting to understand the conscious and unconscious dynamics which
influence it.

Year three
You will research and write your Masters dissertation. You will be supported by a weekly
seminar in the first term, to discuss your ideas and prepare a proposed outline of your
paper. Once your chosen topic of study is approved, you will attend a fortnightly seminar
to discuss the progress of your dissertation, in parallel with meetings with your individual
supervisor.

Assessment
Written assignments, clinical assessments (where relevant) and a dissertation. There are
no written examinations for this course.
Attendance
Thursday evenings during school term-time, 5.30pm-9.30pm.
Duration
Three years, part-time.
Academic award
On successful completion of this course you will be awarded an MA, accredited by the
University of East London. The following intermediate awards are also available:
Postgraduate Certificate (after successful completion of year one)
Postgraduate Diploma (after successful completion of year two)
You will also be eligible for membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapy and
Allied Professions.
Entry requirements
The programme is open to anyone working in the field of education. If you have a first
degree and professional qualifications, thats ideal, but we strongly encourage you to
apply even if you dont, as long as you have life experience and a spirit of enquiry and
participation. You must work in an educational setting throughout the course.
Fees
For UK students starting in 2014, fees will be 2,500 per year.

Summer term - 13 April to 22 May 2015
Closing date for applications
9 June 2014. Late applications will be considered in late August/early September.
