A former senior member of the Fiji Labour Party is one of the proposed officials of the proposed FijiFirst party which applied for registration. Former senator and leader of Labours Nadi branch, Bijay Prasad, will share the role as the proposed vice-president with the Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere. The Minister for Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni, is the proposed president. When the Prime Ministers proposed party is finally registered, Dr Luveni will become the fourth iTaukei woman as president of a political party. The others are: Lavenia Padarath (Labour), Tupou Draunidalo (National Federation Party), Linda Tabuya (Peoples Democratic Party). Ro Teimumu Kepa was president of SODELPA before she became leader. Ex-military officer Silivenusi Waqausa is now president.
Bainimarama's Team
The Attorney-General, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum, is the proposed general secretary of the proposed FijiFirst. Vimlesh Kumar, an accountant and an affiliate member of CPA Australia, is the proposed treasurer. Mr Prasad is adamant that he has brought with him to join proposed FijiFirst a good number of former Labour supporters after his fallout with leader, Mahendra Chaudhry. He revealed that because of his differences with Mr Chaudhry he was asked to leave the party, which he did voluntarily. Of course I left with a warning that the demise of the party would begin the moment I walked out of the door, Mr Prasad said. To a large extent, thats what has been happening, and the bulk of the IndoFijians now see what I have said which of course had hurt them simply because I was speaking as the leader and as the events turn out they realised that I was correct. If they would have listened to me then, today the party could have stood a chance of winning but now things have changed and the current Prime Minister is responsible for the change. No comments could be obtained from Fiji Labour officials. PM Rear Admiral (Retired) Voreqe Bainimarama lodged the proposed partys application with 40,083 signatures of original members. Of these signatures 903 were from the Eastern Division; 9045 from the Northern Division; 14,499 from the Central Division and 15,636 from the Western Division. He said these signatures were collected over a very short period of time. Once approval is given after 28 days, Mr Bainimarama said they would set up branch offices throughout Fiji. Our approach, as you know as demonstrated through my leadership, is to work for and with all Fijians. Our branches and branch officials will represent our youth, our women and Fijians from all walks of life, he said. Once the proposed party is registered, Mr Bainimarama said they would of course start their campaign. We will meet and sit down and discuss with Fijians about how we, as citizens of this wonderful country, must all come together and put Fiji first. We must come together with sincerity and honesty and with love and affection, without any pretentions, to ensure that Fiji continues on its path of progress, success and opportunities for all Fijians, he added. The Fijian Elections Office will await any public objections and verify the required 5000 signatures before it registers the proposed party.
Only 33 per cent of employers have submitted their Pay As You Earn (PAYE) final annual employee summaries with FRCA. But at least 98 per cent of employers have submitted the PAYE monthly summaries. The Fiji Revenue Customs Authority (FRCA) says some employers have filed for part of the year. And our teams are working with them to ensure full compliance, he said. Employers who need assistance are requested to contact FRCA. Meanwhile the authority warns the two per cent of employers or 42 organisations and companies they need to comply with the law or face penalties. Every employer must ensure that the funds contributed by their employees for the provision of public services are
accounted for correctly, it is only right and proper, Tikolevu said. We will start charging penalties as provided for under the law. The monthly summaries are critical in identifying the taxes paid by an individual employer. Once we receive the summaries for 12 months, we will then be able to run the commissioners assessment, which will determine whether an individual has a refund or needs to pay more tax. We have also publicised the list of accredited software vendors who can assist employers with their payroll systems. The list is available on our website. We also have accommodated the needs of smaller employers, who can use the flat file generators, also available on our website.

Barry Whitesides three-year term as 4 Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) Governor came to an end early this week, but he will continue in the role, at least in an acting capacity, the central bank confirms. In a statement to the media, the RBF said Fiji President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau appointed Whiteside to serve as acting governor until such time as a permanent appointment is made. The central bank assures the temporary appointment will neither affect nor diminish Whitesides authority and the RBF's operation. The RBF will continue to function under Mr Whitesides leadership, the RBF said. Operations should not be affected. The Bank has an established work plan for the year and will continue to meet its core objectives as always. It is understood Whiteside has reapplied for a second term, but it is unclear when a permanent appointment will be made. Former Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) general secretary, Felix Anthony was elected the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party during the party's annual congress in Lautoka. Anthony, who resigned from FTUC earlier in the week to contest the leadership role, said he was always confident about his chances and he sees his election as an opportunity and a challenge. People have shown confidence in me and given me this honour but its going to be a challenge because this election will be a difficult one, Anthony said. He said this was because of the new electoral system and the restrictions in place and because the country has been in dictatorship for the last eight years.
A lot of people are hurt and would want change and we dont anticipate an easy election and we wont underestimate this challenge. We will work hard and we have people who are committed and we see this as an opportunity to unite the people of Fiji, he said. Former University of the South Pacific law lecturer, Lynda Tabuya was elected the party president while Aman Ravindra Singh was elected the general secretary. Vijay Singh was elected the party treasurer while former interim secretary Sat Narayan was elected as one of the four vice presidents. Six board members were also elected during the congress.
The Bainimarama Governments free education initiative will lift up the game of Fijis tourism industry, said Attorney-General and Minister for Tourism, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. The Minister made this comment while opening the inaugural Fijian Tourism Expo at the Sheraton Resort on Denerau, explaining that Fijis tourism operators will benefit from a welltrained and well educated workforce. In five years time, we should not have any child that comes out of school without at least a Year 13 education, he said. He said that Government loans extend to hospitality and catering courses as well, adding that the program could assist Fijians currently working in the tourism industry who wanted to go back to university to further their education, upgrade their skills and improve their career prospects. The Minister also took the opportunity to highlight the Governments Fijian Made/Buy Fijian campaign to the group of international buyers present
at the Expo. He said that genuine Fijian Made products are now certified to let customers know that what they are buying is made in Fiji, by Fijians, with Fijian materials. Tourists are looking for authentic souvenirs as opposed to something thats imported, he explained. To us, tourism is not simply about tourists coming in, staying in the hotels, and then leaving. We also want them to spend their money on Fijian products, he said. The Attorney-General gave the industry an update on the planned $100 million upgrade of Nadi Airport as well as the four-lane road project out of the Airport, which is scheduled to begin in July. The Attorney-General ended his speech with a call to the industry and its international partners to provide Tourism Fiji with suggestions and feedback for improving its services. This is a partnership collaboration. We want that collaboration to be beneficial for all of us, he said.

Lack Of Dalo
The sale of a variety of dalo on Vanua Levu has not been successful because of the inconsistency of supply from farmers, says Agricultural Marketing Authority sales and marketing manager Alivereti Yaya. Mr Yaya said there was a high demand for tausala (a variety of dalo) in the local market but farmers were not supplying enough. "There is so much demand for tausala in the local market alone but there's not a lot coming out of Vanua Levu," Mr Yaya said. "And that goes for other varieties of dalo. "There is a large supply coming out of Taveuni but that is the only area that has consistent supply compared to areas like Savusavu." He said farmers were usually focused more on planting the crop for their own demand. "They only plant enough for themselves and not for the greater population. "The only time where there is a high number of dalo is at the end of the year but what we need to cater for the high demand from other parts of the country is for the supply to be consistent all year around. "There needs to be more awareness done for dalo farmers where they should be provided with more information like where the demand lies and what variety is in high demand. Planting programs should be encouraged beca use there is a large market for it but there is a hardly any farming being done. "The sale of dalo for export has decreased from $1.50 a kilogram to $1.60 because the supply is always lower than the demand." He added there was a high demand for dalo in New Zealand which they have been trying to cater for.

Sanjula Devis legacy will carry on through her daughter, the Singh family will make sure of that. We will make sure she gets the future Sanju wanted, said a member of the Singh family, who didnt want his first name published. Anything she needs, she will have. Sitting beside Devis nine-yearold daughter Vandhita Pal Tuesday evening, Singh had an abundance of kind words to offer about the woman he called his sister. She was an angel for us, were the first ones from his mouth. Devis life ended suddenly and tragically Sunday evening when she, Vandhita and a pair of family friends went to the home of her estranged husband to collect some of her belongings. She and Vandhita had moved out of the home in the 6400 block of Penbrooke Dr. S.E. about a month ago after her relationship with her husband, whom she married in 2012, took a turn for the worse, said Singh. The mother and daughter were due to move into their own basement suite next week. Several years earlier, they had found a new family in the Singhs after Devi moved to Canada from Fiji to give her daughter a better life. She really cared for her daughter, she wanted her to have a bright future, said Singh. During the visit to her estranged husbands home Sunday, Devi, 36, along with 29-year-old Fahmida Velji-
Visram, who had gone along to help, were stabbed and killed. A third woman a landlord at the home was taken to hospital, where she was treated and released. Two second-degree murder charges and an aggravated assault charge are now pending against a man believed to be Devis estranged husband, whom Singh said was adamant about fixing the relationship with his wife. Vandhita, a beautiful and obviously bright and articulate girl, is living with the Singhs for now. Her face lit up when she talked about her mom. She said she felt proud that her mom wanted the best for her. She said she and her mom had faced and overcome challenges together and that they had wonderful times together. They were incredibly close. Devi was also very close with the Singhs. I considered her a sister, she considered me a brother, my parents were her mom and dad, said Singh. Wed have family dinners maybe once or twice a week. Both Singh and Devis daughter recalled her amazing cooking, saying she was truly talented in the kitchen, as well as her ability to raise spirits, even at a funeral, and her loud, boisterous laughter. We lost someone really close to us, said Singh. Things she has done for us are unforgettable. What happened shouldnt have happened. We will never forget her.

Upgrade works to the Nadi International Airport is expected to commence once the Airports Fiji Limited board identifies a preferred contractor. These comments were made by the Attorney-General and Minister for Tourism, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday while speaking at the Fijian Tourism Expo. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the upgrade would include an expansion to both the departure and arrival areas. He confirmed plans have already been drawn up for the airport and the upgrades would likely be taken care of by a mix of foreign and local contractors. The scale of the work means there is not, perhaps, necessarily enough local skill sets available here to do the job, he said. So there may be a combination of foreign and local but I dont want to
pre-empt the outcome of it, but that is the stage we are at. An excess of over $17 million is being invested in this project to cater for more numbers and provide more luxury and facilities. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said essentially the upgrade involves the expansion of the departure area, the lifting up of the roof for more space and more light. At the moment, it feels very congested and claustrophobic, actually, he said. It is a physical extension of the departure area- once you go through immigration and go through the stores, that is all going to change. We want people to spend more time at the airport. Modern day operations at airports have more emphasis in terms of income from the concessions and the money spent at the airport, as opposed to gaining your income through aircraft landing fees.
A mother and her daughter were killed after they were crushed between two buses at the Suva Bus Stand. Police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri confirmed the victims were pronounced dead on arrival at the CWM Hospital. Ministry of Health spokesperson Evelyn Mani confirmed the victims were a 45-year-old woman and her four-year-old girl. A male was also admitted at the hospital and in serious condition. The area was surrounded by hundreds of people and police officers were conducting their investigation. Blood was also visible at the scene where the accident happened. A witness at the scene, Waisake Tulavu, 40 year old of Cunningham, Suva, claimed that he saw everything that happened beginning from the crash to the transportation of the victims to the hospital. The Dee Cees bus was speeding into the bus stand while the Nasese Bus and a Citiline bus were reversing to where the Dee Cees bus was heading from, he said. He claimed that the Dee Cees Bus was driven by a bus checker while the bus driver was seated at the engine compartment. The two were arguing and all of a sudden the checker stopped the bus and the Nasese Bus while reversing bumped into it, Mr Tulavu claimed.

By the force of the hit, the Nasese bus lunged forward at the same time the victims were crossing. The Citiline bus was also reversing. The victims were squashed in between the Nasese bus and the City line bus as it was also reversing. He claimed the Nasese bus bounced twice and hit the victims. A teary Mr Tulavu said he held the victims in his arms and put them in the taxi. They were not breathing, he said. Suva Market Stand Taxi drivers Romit Mahabir and Bishwajeet Singh said they could not believe their eyes as they transported the mother and the child to the hospital. The mother was dead when she was put in my taxi, Mr Singh said. Mr Mahabir said the daughter was not breathing as well. Meanwhile, Dee Cees operations manager Temo Chand said that the bus checker who was driving the bus was a licensed driver. He stressed that it was only the checker who was in the bus during the time of the accident and no one else. He said that members of the public who witnessed the accident allegedly beat up the checker. Mr Sokomuri said that the drivers of the three buses were taken in for questioning.
Fiji's acting Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ravi Narayan is still to decide on his future with the force as he prepares to make way for newly appointed head of police Bernadus (Ben) Groenewald. He further said he had not decided on whether to continue his police career or end it. However, Fijis Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama told the reporter that the

Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum will not resign from his post as Elections Minister despite calls from political parties to do so following his appointment as general secretary for the proposed FijiFirst party. The National Federation Party joined the chorus saying the AG compromised his position as Elections Minister when he accepted the post with the proposed party, demanding that he steps down if the September 17 election is to be perceived as free and fair. No comments could be obtained from the Minister concerned. However, when the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama enquired referred to the 2013 Fiji Constriction. Meanwhile, Iyer in his statement had said "the September 17 elections will lose all semblance of being free, fair and credible, if Sayed-Khaiyum chooses to deliberately ignore the fundamental principle of declaring his interest in the preparatory work and conduct of elections, and continue holding both positions of Minister responsible for Elections and General Secretary of the proposed FijiFirst Party.

A nephew of Fiji's interim Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama, is facing attempted homicide charges in the United States after a wild police chase. Sevanaia Bainimarama, 39, led police on a 19-minute chase through Western Pennsylvania last month, during which he allegedly fired a gun at the officers, hit a deer and then tried to run over police on a dead-end street, a local newspaper reports. The drama started when he ran two stop signs about 2am on April 20 and police tried to pull him over. He did not stop and allegedly later told police he had no intention of doing so. Nineteen minutes later, Bainimarama was cornered down a cul-de-sac and, when he allegedly attempted to flee again, was shot in both arms and one hand by police. Police said that when they apprehended him he smelt of alcohol and Bainimarama even asked for a beer as he underwent treatment for gunshot
wounds in an ambulance. He was not charged with any alcoholrelated offences and is now recovering in hospital. He was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, fleeing police and running stop signs. Bainimarama left Fiji in 1998 for a new life in the United States, long before his uncle, Frank, seized power in 2006. Until recently, Bainimarama was working for natural gas drilling company Calfrac Well Services, earning a living far beyond what he could have ever imagined in his homeland, a family member told a local newspaper. A Fijian co-worker, Tom Chang, loaned him the Nissan Pathfinder he was driving at the time of the chase. He told the newspaper he was shocked to hear about the encounter, because his countryman is "a good-hearted guy." "It's like something out of a movie."

COCA-COLA Amatil (Fiji) Limited is introducing a new version of one of the world's most popular zero calorie drinks, Coca-Cola Zero, in the Fijian market. The company's general manager, Steven Jowell, said they were confident the new formulation would be a flavour profile that Fijians would love. With a couple of new products lined up, he said the biggest would be the relaunched new version of "Coke Zero".
"We feel that we can find a better taste in Coke Zero to the Fijian consumers and we are busy with the final testing with consumers at the moment," he said. He said the product was set to launch in October with plans to also introduce vitamin water with very low calorie drink to the market. "We had a small launch on our new Kiwi Blue Sparkling water, a combination of pure water and soft drinks," he said.

Fiji's Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama refuses to be drawn into discussion of how the 2014 Election will play out in view of the absence of seasoned and veteran politicians Laisenia Qarase and Mahendra Chaudhry. Chaudhry and Qarase, both former prime ministers having done terms in office - May 19, 1999 - May 19, 2000 for the former and 2000 till 2006 for the latter - are out of the running to contest the September 17 election after being convicted of exchange control violation and abuse of office respectively. When the media brought up the subject, the head of government said, "I don't want to touch that area. I want to touch only on my development not somebody else." Bainimarama said his prerogative is to attend to the needs of the Fijian people and focus on plans to move the country forward. He highlighted the commissioning
of the second government ship, `Vunilagi` in Suva as indicative of the government's commitment to serve ordinary Fijians and in this instance the maritime areas. And Im extremely proud that my government is finally making the investment needed to improve our ability to serve our maritime communities and finally give them what they deserve," Bainimarama said. They deserved more resources to empower them and give them the things they needed to improve their lives and those of their families." His government he says is determined to provide maritime people with those resources, whether it is access to telecommunications, free education, and better health or in this instance, better transport links. Bainimarama also said in an earlier interview that they expect huge support from people who are happy with the changes they have done through their policies and "what we will do."
A school teacher described how he saw his blood-splattered brother dead at an accident scene in Sigatoka. Shamal Kumar of Nabila Primary School said he could not believe his eyes that Shelvin, 27, a Tuva Primary School teacher, was dead. A few moments earlier the brothers were in a mini-bus approaching Maro at about 11am. Shamal said he watched in horror as the mini-bus tumbled on its side down the slope after a failed attempt to overtake another vehicle. It happened like a lightning strike. All of a sudden we found ourselves lying on the ground, he said. It was a horrific scene to see my brother covered in blood after he was thrown out of the mini-bus. He died on the spot Shamal was still shaken after he was discharged from Sigatoka Hospital. My brother lost his life on the spot because of the injuries he sustained from the accident. He was the sole bread winner for the family for the past seven years, he said. He said he was lucky to escape death. Shelvin is survived by wife Robina
Maharaj who is expecting their first child next month. He said they boarded the mini-bus at the Natadola junction and minutes later tragedy struck. The mini-bus driver overtook another vehicle and collided with the oncoming four-wheel drive, he said The mini-bus driver tried to avoid the headon collision but it was a little late and the fourwheel drive struck the side of the minibus. Due to the impact of the collision, the side door of the mini-bus came off and stuck onto the four wheel drive. Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the mini-bus was heading towards Nadi with six passengers when the incident occurred. Other passengers of the mini-bus, a 23-year-old man, 43-year old man, 50-year old man and another 40-year old school teacher all sustained minor injuries and are all admitted in stable condition at the Sigatoka Hospital. An 18-year-old passenger had to be transferred to CWM Hospital for a dislocated left knee, Ms Naisoro said. She said the 44-year-old mini-bus driver was under police guard at the Sigatoka Hospital.
Roshika Deo GAINING inspiration from the proposed Fiji First organisation's signature collection style, the only aspiring independent candidate running for elections, Roshika Deo, is continuing her signature collections around the country. Ms Deo, who is travelling through the Western Division, said she was working with her network members to collect signatures as well as to comply with any requirements in the Electoral Decree. "We have been inspired by proposed party Fiji First's strategy in signature collection and are in the process of applying permits with the local councils to collect signatures at the market places," Ms Deo said. "We will be applying for a permit with the Suva City and Nasinu Town councils this week. We will also be approaching private business premises to request for space to set up a table to collect signatures." She said she and her team were using the time they had to plan and do all the groundwork for their campaign so once she was officially confirmed as a candidate, she could use her time more effectively. "We have had a few challenges in terms of collecting signatures with our limited resources. "There are still many young people that have not yet registered to vote within the Suva and Nadi area; most of the people we have come across have already signed up for a party." Ms Deo said she came across an issue with an authority of a faith-based organisation. "We had a situation in Sigatoka where we were advised that a local government official informed a faith based group to not allow us to meet with the women we had arranged a meeting with to collect signatures. "As a result, we were denied entry and were not able to collect the signatures from the group of women that we had pre-arranged with."

Fiji's Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola says the proposed Australian 3-month Work and Holiday Visa program needs to go through the government process. Ratu Inoke said the government is still to decide on how to reciprocate to the new visa initiative for the benefit of Australian and Fijian youths. "Whilst the Australian Govt has approved the three months holiday and work program, the Fiji Govt is still to
go through its processes to decide on reciprocity," Ratu Inoke said. The visa programme will allow Fijian youths between the ages of 18 and 30 to work and study while on an extended holiday of up to 12 months in Australia. Australian Senator Brett Mason had said the go-ahead of the programme depends on whether the Fijian Govt can offer the same arrangement for Australian youths.

Monica Lewinsky, whose affair with US President Bill Clinton nearly brought down his administration in the 1990s, has spoken publicly about the ordeal for the first time in a decade. The former White House intern, now 40, says she is discussing the affair publicly to clear the air and tell her side of events. Ms Lewinsky says the public backlash, rejection by employers, and ridicule she has received online in the past 10 years nearly drove her to suicide. "I am determined to have a different ending to my story," she wrote in an article in Vanity Fair magazine. "I've decided, finally, to stick my head above the parapet so that I can take back my narrative and give a purpose to my past." Ms Lewinsky denies being paid off by the Clintons to stay silent in the years following the affair. "Nothing could be further from the truth," she said. News of the president's affair with the then 22-year-old intern broke in 1998 and led to Mr Clinton being impeached

While she has not disclosed how much she has been paid to speak out now, Ms Lewinsky said shortly after the scandal she turned down offers of more than $10 million for her story. Ms Lewinsky said she was bullied extensively online and was so anxious at times she became suicidal. Having been part of one of the first scandals to break online, Ms Lewinsky says she wants to work with victims of cyber-bullying and harassment. She said her struggle with online harassment "took on a different meaning" in 2010 when news broke of the suicide of Tyler Clementi, the gay Rutgers student who was shown on the internet kissing another man. "Perhaps by sharing my story ... I might be able to help others in their darkest moments of humiliation," she said.
Nigerian police have offered a 50 million naira ($300,000) reward on Wednesday to anyone who can give credible information leading to the rescue of more than 200 schoolgirls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram militants 22 days ago. Last month's mass kidnapping by the Islamist rebels in the remote northeastern village of Chibok has triggered an international outcry and protests in Nigeria, piling pressure on the government to get the girls back. The government of Nigeria has accepted assistance from the United States to "find and free" the school girls. The decision was made amid reports the Islamist group had kidnapped another eight girls from a village in north-eastern Nigeria on Monday (local time). Boko Haram has threatened to sell the girls into slavery. US secretary of state John Kerry said Nigeria's president, Goodluck Jonathan, was happy to have America's support immediately. Botched Execution: Barack Obama To Have Attorney-General Look Into Clayton Lockett's Death
President Barack Obama says the botched execution of a murderer in Oklahoma raises questions about the death penalty in the United States and he will ask his attorney-general to look into the situation. The condemned man, 38-year-old Clayton Lockett, who was convicted of murder, rape, kidnapping and robbery in a 1999 crime spree, died of an apparent heart attack after the lethal injection protocol failed. A prison report said the problem was largely due to a collapsed vein during the injection of the lethal drugs and that the needle was inserted in Lockett's groin instead of his arm. Oklahoma's director of corrections called for a revision of the state's execution methods and a suspension of executions until new procedures are in place. "What happened in Oklahoma is deeply troubling," Mr Obama said. Mr Obama cited uneven application of the death penalty in the US, including racial bias and cases in which murder convictions were later overturned, as grounds for further study of the issue. "And this situation in Oklahoma just highlights some of the significant problems," he said at a news conference. "I'll be discussing with (attorneygeneral) Eric Holder and others to get me an analysis of what steps have been taken - not just in this particular instance, but more broadly in this area. "I think we do have to, as a society, ask ourselves some difficult and profound questions around these issues." Oklahoma has sent Lockett's body to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office for a complete post-mortem examination, officials in the state said. It was also testing a batch of drugs that was to be used in a second execution planned to come just after Lockett was put to death on Tuesday. The second inmate, convicted rapist and murderer Charles Warner, was granted a temporary stay due to the problems with Lockett's execution.

provide expertise on intelligence, investigations and hostage negotiations and to help facilitate information sharing and victims' assistance," Mr Kerry said. "We remain deeply concerned about the welfare of these young girls and we want to provide whatever assistance is possible to provide for their safe return to their families." Mr Kerry was asked at a press conference in Washington why it had taken more than three weeks for the US to respond. "We have been in touch since day one and we have been engaged," Mr Kerry said. "But the government (of Nigeria) had its own set of strategies, if you will, in the beginning. You can offer and talk, but can't do that if a government has its own sense of how it's proceeding. "I think now the complications that have arisen have convinced everybody that there needs to be a greater effort. It will begin immediately, literally immediately." "We've been talking to AFRICOM (US Africa Command) and I think you'll see a very rapid response."

Experts in Italy have warned one of the world's most famous statues, Michelangelo's David, is in danger of collapsing because it has weak ankles. They believe the 4.34 meter tall statue of the naked boy-warrior is vulnerable because of its leaning pose and the poor quality marble used by Michelangelo. David was completed by Michelangelo in 1504, more than 500 years ago, from a single block of marble. It spent centuries outdoors battling the elements and suffered damage during a riot in 1527 and a protest by an Italian painter who smashed off a toe with a hammer in 1991. The statue only recently underwent a year of restoration work and was unveiled in 2011 after restorers painstakingly cleaned off grime and sulphate deposits. It was during this process the stress on the statue's ankles was first noticed. The statue stood for nearly four
centuries outside Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, but was moved into the Accademmia in 1873. The sculpture attracts more than 1 million visitors each year, and is a star in the commercial world. David's image has been reprinted on millions of fridge magnets, tea towels and countless other souvenirs. The statue also featured in an early episode of the Simpsons which dealt with censorship issues. In July 2013, historical novelist Sarah Dunant told Radio National's Books and Arts Daily program that she would like to see David go into hiding. "What I'd like to see is for the statue of Michelangelo's David to disappear for a couple of hundred years, so it's expunged from our consciousness and our popular references," she said. "So it can be found again - like the Statue of Liberty at the end of the Planet of the Apes - and seen again with a sense of awe."

How A Little Alberta Union Helps Temporary Foreign Workers Become Canadian
The Red Deer-based food workers' union took an unusual step at the start of the program organized orientation. He learned about the Cargill plant where he would be working, helping to bone the muscular necks of the 4,500 cattle processed there every day, and the lingo his fellow industrial butchers might encounter on the floor. But most importantly, Basa heard about the union he now fell under, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1118. Making a 'bad' program 'livable' The Local 1118's collective agreement stipulates that if employers hire temporary foreign workers, they must help them apply to become permanent citizens. Among other things, that means unionized companies under the Red Deer-based Local 1118 can't hire temporary foreign workers who don't meet eligibility requirements for residency, such as speaking English. If they do, the employer must help them meet the requirements, including teaching them the language. "I was so excited," said Basa. "I was so eager to bring my wife. I told myself I'm going to do everything and anything as long as my wife will be here and we're together." Basa began the process to become a permanent resident the following year, and was accepted. A couple of years later, his wife finally landed in Canada. After five years with Cargill, he joined the union last year as a fulltime employee. He's not alone. Of the 1,000 foreign workers who came to work at Cargill's High River plant under the TFW program, about half are already permanent residents, says Basa. Up to 2,500 of the local union's 4,300 members are temporary foreign workers who have either become permanent residents or in the process, says UFCW Local 1118 president Albert Johnson. "So a large number of our [temporary foreign workers] have got their opportunity in Canada because of our program," he says. However, Johnson notes the union doesn't support the federal government's program itself. Filipino butcher Eduardo Basa knew little about the small-town meatpacking plant in southern Alberta where he'd secured a job under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. "When I came to Canada, I feel that I'm blindfolded. I don't know where to go," said Basa, about his journey here from Manila nearly six years ago. "I know the name of the company, but what's the process, what's the system?" A surprise awaited him. He had stumbled into a workplace with a rare guarantee to its transient foreigner workers to help them become Canadians. Many of the hundreds of thousands of temporary foreign workers, particularly those coming from developing countries to work in gruelling jobs, dream of ultimately getting citizenship. But the process is often complex and littered with stumbling blocks for those brought here to fill short-term labour gaps. In Basa's case, however, soon after arriving in High River, Alta., on May 27, 2008, he underwent a union"What we've managed to do with our employers is make a bad program into a livable program," he says. "The answer to this whole foreign worker issue is not temporary foreign workers. It's permanent immigration." Making them 'part of the country' The origin of the union's decision to write temporary foreign workers into its collective agreement has its roots in the influx of the so-called "boat people" from Vietnam in the late 1970s and early '80s. Thousands of refugees flooded into Canada after the Vietnam War ended. Many struggled, lacking English and knowledge about their new home, and unions and church groups stepped up to help them adjust. When a pilot project began in Alberta and B.C. in 2002, to bring in low-skill workers under the TFW program for the first time, the union vowed their new members would be treated differently.

Citing public criticism and a need to focus on our key priorities, Canadas top border enforcement official last fall recommended that his agency end participation in a popular-butcontroversial reality/documentary TV series that follows the day-to-day lives of officers, newly released records show. But Luc Portelance, president of the Canada Border Services Agency, either had a change of heart or was overruled by federal Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney because filming is now underway for a third season of Border Security: Canadas Front Line, one of the most popular shows on the National Geographic Channel. Critics, who have complained that the show is exploitative and tramples on the privacy rights of citizens, said Wednesday the reversal demands explanation. If the CBSA itself recommended dropping the show because it was not directly linked to CBSAs priorities, then which priorities does this reality show serve? asked Josh Paterson, executive director of the B.C. However, Mr. Portelance wrote to Mr. Blaney last October to say that he was unable to recommend that we consider a third season at this time, according to a briefing note obtained by Postmedia News through access-toinformation legislation. While the program represented good value for money, elevated the profile of border officers and fostered a growing sense of pride in our work, there continued to be some risk in continuing to participate in the show after two seasons, Mr. Portelance wrote. He cited the backlash that followed the controversial filming in March 2013 of an immigration raid at a Vancouver construction site that ensnared several undocumented workers. Community organizations, human rights groups and other critics expressed concerns over privacy and whether individuals were provided an opportunity to give informed consent. Even though CBSA spent a relatively modest $200,000 per season in communications support, the program also required managers to devote time to screen episodes, Mr. Portelance wrote. Mr. Paterson said he understands that government agencies and their ministries have discussions and that views can change. Approximately 300 people, mainly Mr. Krishnans family members representing 4 generations, together with many friends and families gathered at the TISI Sangam Temple (Sri Venkateshwara Maha Vishnu Temple), in Delta, on Saturday evening 03 May 2014, for Hawan and Ramayan, in celebration of Raj Krishnans 80th Birthday. Following the Puja, Mr. Krishnan had his birthday cake ceremony, which was followed by a special dance performed by his great-grand daughter. The event was Emceed by Rajs son, Rakesh Krishnan who acknowledged many out of town guests for the auspicious occasion. Many guests and families came from Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta; as well as Seattle, Portland, Haywood and Sacramento, USA. Dr. Anil Mangal, the key note speaker, outlined many of Raj Krishnans achievements and contributions both in Fiji and in Canada. Mr. Krishnan is the youngest son of Mr & Mrs Sadhu Krishnan of Nadera, Nasinu in Fiji, where they also had a temple (Sadhu Krishnan Temple), which still exists today. Raj worked for approximately 19 years in Fiji, initially as a clerk for the Millers Ltd and later became a Fiji Police Officer. He was married at age 22 yrs and in May 1969 immigrated to Canada, with his family, at the prime age of 35 yrs. After his arrival in Canada, 45 years ago, Raj worked for 1 yr at the Canadian Postal Services, as a PostMan in Vancouver, BC; delivering Mail. He then joined the prestigious hotel in Vancouver, the Western Bayshore Hotel in 1970 and worked there for 27 yrs until his retirement in 1997. While Raj retired 17 yrs ago, at age 63 yrs, he has not been sitting idle, he has been extremely busy and active in community services. Mr. Krishnan has provided exemplary service to ReligiousCultural/ Charitable and Community Organizations, while keeping his family responsibilities. In 1970, only one year after his arrival in Canada, in an effort to bring our Religious and Cultural heritage from Fiji to Canada, he was instrumental as one of the leaders, in forming a number of religious organizations: the Prem Ramayan & Bhajan Mandali. As everyone knows the custom in Fiji, whenever there was Puja at any-ones home, there would be Ramayan in the evenings. Also, if someone passed away there would be Bhajan at their house. By forming these groups, Raj made these traditions also possible here in Canada. Faag Mandali did chautals at peoples home during Holi festival. He also started this tradition here by forming the Prem Faag Mandali which still continues.
Raj Kumaran Krishnan Raj is also a Founding Member of the Vishwa Hindu Prasid (VHP) Temple, in North Burnaby. He was on the Board of VHP from 1971-78, and was the first person from Fiji to be a VHP Board member. Following the foot-steps of his own father in Fiji, in 1978 (9 years after his arrival in Canada), Raj established the Maha Kali Mandir which stands on his personal property, in Vancouver, but is open to the public. It serves people from various other countries and not only the people from Fiji. This mandir is on Grandview Highway, on Natal St, near Boundary Road. There is regular Puja at Maha Kali Mandir 3 days a week (Tues, Fri & Sundays), and Raj is present at the Mandir during the day as well as the evenings. There is also Annual Puja at the Mandir since its inception, its usually in late July of each year; This year 2014, will be the Thirty Sixth Annual Puja. This Maha Kali Mandir in addition to a place for puja & religious celebrations, also provides great opportunities for people of all ages, to learn to sing Bhajans & Kirtans under the very kind and patient guidance of Raj Krishnan, who himself is also an accomplished singer - During his 78 Birthday Raj released a CD, containing all Religious Devotional Songs. Mr. Krishnan also supports other Religious Organizations in the FijiCanadian community, including TISI Sangam Educational & Cultural Society, Sanatan Dharam Education & Cultural Society (Shiv Mandir), where he is also a member. Dr Mangal noted that Rajs support and involvement in numerous religious organizations, entitles him the recognition as a man of God. In addition, he noted the example Raj was setting, by holding the religious celebration of his birthday. Instead of BBQ & Beer for this important Birthday, he chose to have Puja and Celebrations at the Sangam temple, giving all attendees

A true patriot, a Canadian, who cares for his country of Canada, but has not forgotten his country of birth, Fiji. He has contributed considerably during many major crises in Fiji. Raj has been very successful and he keeps on giving. He is a philanthropher who has provided exemplary and enthusiastic service to many religious, social and charitable organizations, both in the Fiji-Canadian and other Canadian communities. He is an accomplished Singer of Bhajans & Kirtans and has produced his own CD. He has impacted and touched many lives, as exemplified by a very large gathering at the temple. Raj is a very proud family man and has managed to achieve a balance in life, just like any true leader and the FijiCanadian community is indeed blessed to have such a great leader. Wasu Naidu, speaking on behalf of all the Board of Directors of Maather Sangam, Parent body Sangam Society and all their members, recognized Pundith Raj Kumaran Krishnans contributions to several societies, and noted that Raj has been involved in Sanstha ke kaam since 18 years of age from Fiji and here in Vancouver.. now at 80 years of age and still going strong. He noted Raj is a member of Sangam Society since its formation in 1982. Both Raj and Daya Wati Krishnan became Life Members of Sangam Society in 1989, 25 years ago. Raj served on the Sangam Board of Directors as a Trustee 1992-1994. Mr. Naidu gratefully acknowledged that Pt. Raj Krishnan has always been a very strong supporter of the Sangam Society since day one and a generous donor for the temples progress and improvements. Upon receiving Sangam Society sponsorship, Raj Krishnan has been a Licensed Religious Minister since 1987 (for 27 yrs now), he was the first person from Fiji to receive Canadian Marriage Officer licence. During this period, he has performed over 300 marriage registrations. Raj Krishnan, in acknowledging all present, chocked with emotions as he thanked all who worked hard and did all the necessary preparations, to make this special birthday celebrations a success for him. He was overwhelmed by the large gathering and also noted that 90% were members of his family, representing 4 generations. The octogenarians words of wisdom and advice to all present was spend your spare time in community and public service, instead of sitting home or in front of TV all the time. We all wish Raj Krishnan, a very Happy 80th Birthday and many more to come. May the good Lord Bless him always.

Dr Justin explores the issues behind why parents smack kids, how kids feel about being smacked and what we can do to find more long-term discipline solutions. In my parenting classes and coaching sessions I am regularly confronted with people who become incredulous when I suggest that we need to stop hitting our kids if we want to discipline them effectively. Perhaps I shouldnt be so surprised research tells us that upwards of 70 percent of parents think that smacking kids is OK. I generally ask parents why they would want to hit their kids. Most parents correct me, and tell me that they don't want to hit their kids. But immediately and invariably, they add: But it's how you discipline them. Let's get the definitions clear I suggest that discipline is teaching our children good ways to act. This is in direct contrast with physical discipline, which is an act carried out with the intention of causing physical pain or injury to another person1. So while the purpose of discipline is to teach, the purpose of physical discipline is to hurt someone. By hurting that person, we anticipate that he or she will be taught a lesson or disciplined. While many parents may claim that a smack is just a gentle tap to nudge their kids in the right direction, research tells us that the children do not perceive the taps as gentle. Instead, they consistently define it as a hard hit or a very hard hit. This may be because it hurts. Or because neurological evidence emphasizes that physical pain creates brain activity in the same brain regions as emotional pain. So the smack not only hurts physically, but it really does hurt emotionally. Besides, if it were really gentle, it would lose its effectiveness. After all, the purpose of a physical punishment is to hurt!
Why do we hit our kids? There are loads of reasons the kids cop it physically. I often hear the following responses: - Because they deserve it. - To teach them a lesson it's the only way to get through to them sometimes. - I give them a few warnings, but if they won't listen, that's the consequence. - It keeps them in line. They would go crazy if they werent scared of me. Some more thoughtful parents sometimes acknowledge that they hit their kids out of frustration, due to stress, or exhaustion. In other words, it's not so much because of the kids, but because they as parents struggle to cope sometimes. There are less obvious reasons for smacking. Research shows that parents who are fighting with one another (or using controlling techniques or being critical or insulting one another) have children who are at twice the risk of being hit. Does smacking kids actually work? The response to this question is: work to do what? Let's be frank. If you give your kid a whack, it's pretty certain to change her behaviour. We certainly get a short-term fix. But beyond that, smacking kids also works to do a few other things really well. A recent study indicated that children who are spanked are at a greater likelihood of developing aggressive behaviors themselves. And the research article found that smacking kids is positively related to what psychologists refer to as externalizing behaviour that is, behaviour related to acting out, being aggressive or oppositional, or even being hyperactive. The same study showed spanking was associated with increased levels of anxiety, depressive characteristics, and withdrawal. Research has shown that spanking has a negative relationship with cognitive development. Hitting kids can make them dumb that is bad for learning! And
smacking our kids affects the security of their attachment relationship with us as parents. Spanking affects their relationships and behaviors with peers as well (increased risk of bullying). In sum (and in addition to the research above) smacking kids works to do the following things: Stop the behaviour in the short term. Model and promote the use of violence to solve problems. Increase stress, anxiety, depression, and withdrawal. Harm social relationships and relationships/attachment with parents. Promotes externalizing behaviors like aggression, delinquency and hyperactivity. Encourage children to become more secretive so they don't get caught. Ignore the reasons as to why kids are behaving the way they are. So yes, smacking kids works to do a lot of things. And while it may stop unwanted behaviour in the shortterm, it seems to come at a great cost
the cost of relationships, cognitive development, aggression modeling, anxiety, depression and so much more. The ugly truth I think that the ugly truth is that parents spank for one of two reasons: It's simply the easiest option, requiring limited perspective, consideration, effort, or time. They honestly don't know what else to do. If it's the first option, then some perspective may be helpful. A quick fix now almost assures us that the longterm consequences will require far more of us later. With parenting, what is fast now becomes slow later, and what is slow now becomes fast later. If it's the second option, let me assure you, there are far better alternatives than smacking your kids. Ill describe just a handful of effective teaching strategies that will help us discipline our kids for the long-term, with positive discipline strategies designed to make life easier for you and happier for your kids. Now its time to focus on solutions things you might be better off doing instead of smacking the kids.

The humble aspirin that you pop to ameliorate headache or a precaution against heart attack can also take on the dangerous colorectal cancer in people with a specific gene, a significant study shows. "Individuals whose colons have high levels of a specific gene product - 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) RNA dramatically reduce their chances of developing colorectal cancer by taking aspirin," said the researchers. Aspirin, however, provides no benefit to individuals whose colons show low levels of 15-PGDH, the researchers
added. "If you looked at the folks from the study who had high 15-PGDH levels and took aspirin, they cut their risk of colon cancer by half," said Sanford Markowitz, a professor at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in the US. "If you looked at the folks from the study that were low for 15-PGDH, they did not benefit at all from taking aspirin," Markowitz added. The extraordinary finding comes from a multi-institutional team that analysed data and other material from two longterm studies involving nearly 128,000 participants.
Have you developed a habit to check emails after office hours on your cell phone? You are heading towards 'stress bomb' that can explode anytime. According to a latest Gallup poll, using cell phones and tablet to read and send work emails outside office hours can dramatically improve your stress levels. Also, nearly 62 percent of workers said they have employers who expect them to check emails frequently outside of working hours. Gallup interviewed 4,475 working
Researchers have discovered why phosphate rich foods can increase blood pressure and promote vascular calcifications. When the level of FGF23 is raised, as through a high phosphate diet, calcium and sodium accumulate, putting strain on the cardiovascular system. Phosphate rich foods include processed cheese, Parmesan, cola, baking powder and most processed foods. Phosphates are widely used in the food industry as preservatives and pH stabilizers. When large quantities of phosphates are consumed, production of the FGF23 hormone is stimulated, which has a negative effect on the cardiovascular system. Reinhold Erben, the head of the Unit of Physiology, Pathophysiology and Biophysics at the Vetmeduni Vienna, warns that "our phosphate consumption is relevant for our state of health." The researchers showed that FGF23 has a so called sodium conserving effect,
adults, aged 18 and older, in the US. The survey found that time spent working remotely outside of working hours has similar problems. Nearly 47 percent of those who work remotely at least seven hours per week reported a lot of stress the previous day compared with 37 percent experiencing stress who reported no remote work time. Workers who leverage mobile technology more often outside of work are much more likely to be stressed on any given day. "Such behaviours can both positively and negatively influence employees' well-being in the long run," the researchers added.

meaning it controls the reabsorption of filtered sodium in the kidneys. Mice lacking FGF23 excrete higher amounts of sodium in their urine, resulting in low blood pressure. Animals with high FGF23 levels show high levels of sodium in their blood, and in turn, high blood pressure. A raised level of FGF23 puts increased strain on the heart. Reinhold Erben explains that, "In patients with chronic renal disease, both the phosphate levels and the levels of FGF23 are chronically high. This often leads to cardiovascular disease. A second study, published by Erben's group in mid-January in EMBO, showed that FGF23 also controls calcium levels. As with sodium, the calcium is filtered in the kidneys and reabsorbed back into the body. If this reabsorption does not take place, the body loses calcium. Too much FGF23 leads to increased take up of calcium by the kidneys, and results in vascular calcification.

When vanity and fitness are placed on an even keel, a gym membership becomes a mandate. With self-conscious teens flocking fitness centers, nutrition and diet fads are fast catching on, such as gulping down protein shakes to build muscles. But, is it safe for your teen to resort to such supplements? We dialed our experts to get their point of view on the effects of popular nutritional supplements on teens. What are protein powders? Protein powders or shakes are basically dietary supplements that can be useful as an easy and complete source of protein. Protein powders are available in various forms such as, whey, soy and casein protein. The whey protein form is more commonly used. Protein powders are mixed with milk or water and consumed usually by people who exercise or train for sports activities and take physical training. These are taken to fulfill the bodys increasing protein demands. Pro-teens? Dr. Manjeeta Nath Das, Consultant Internal Medicine Rockland Hospital, New Delhi, says, Kids have started going to the gym at an early age. Many kids get a gym membership as soon as they start junior college. More often than not, protein shakes and supplements are prescribed by gym instructors to achieve better results from the workouts. But these should not be taken without consulting a doctor. Protein requirement varies from person to person and is calculated according to the body weight. Protein intake should be 1 gram per kilo gram of body weight, per day. This is the standard protein intake that most people get through their diet. But if the teenager exercises and takes part in strenuous physical activity, then the body may require more protein, she clarifies. Most kids exercise to bulk up and increase their muscle body mass for which protein is important. Dietary protein supplements when taken in limitation and with a doctors consultation in minimum quantities will do the deed without adverse
effects. Nutritionist Ms. Miral Sheth, Kohinoor Hospital, Mumbai says, Generally protein shakes are not good for teenagers. If the teenager is involved in intense exercise like rigorous cricket training or any other outdoor game, they should try to increase the intake of proteins through fish and eggs (first class protein). A good diet is the answer to their increasing protein needs, she concludes. Doctors recommend protein supplements for teenagers in these cases: 1. People who are vegan avoid a lot of foods in their diet such as milk, meat, fish, chicken etc. these are all high protein foods and avoiding them could lead to a deficit in the body. Thus, protein supplements can then be used to fulfill nutritional needs. 2. If your teen works out in the gym and wants to bulk up his body, he will need to take these supplements to fuel his workouts and fulfill his bodys growing protein needs. As a teenagers body is still growing, it will use more protein and the need will increase with physical activity. 3. Everybody gets their normal protein requirement through protein-rich food, but these additional supplements are needed only when the teenager starts a new physical routine. 4. Any change from the normal fitness routine to a more severe and stricter routine clocking a lot of hours would require extra protein intake for better results. 5. Any injury-ridden body which is still involved in physical activity will need more protein to recover and heal faster. Effect on Teens: Ms. Sheth says, There are plenty of side effects of additional protein supplement intake such as chances of weight gain in teenagers as they lack fibre and tend to increase the bodys level of calories and fats. Dr. Manjeeta adds, Protein also gets converted into calories, increasing the body weight and can even lead to obesity. It could also result in cardiovascular problems and complete renal failure, which is fatal.
Are you a fitness freak looking for a partner who can give you company? Take your dog along. Cameron Diaz, Nicole Richie, Amanda Seyfried and Nikki Reed are just a few of the stars who were spotted out and about with their pooches, and now it's time you too did the same. A new study from Drontal shows that 40 percent of females have said the reason they purchased a dog was for exercise and 80 percent of females claim that they do more exercise since having a dog. Rob Jones, personal training instructor from StrideFit, said: "Keeping fit with your dog can be a fun thing to do that will help increase the special bond between you and your pet." Jones added: "However, you need to ensure you're not biting off more than you can chew by making sure you plan your training properly and increase time, distance or intensity gradually. Remember to check for signs that your dog is getting tired too, you know when you've done enough, but do you know when your dog has?" Top tips for working out with your pet: - Choose wisely: Choose something

that you love and you'll be more inclined to keep exercising with your pooch long-term. This could be scenic hikes, agility training, rugged trail runs, cycling or even sea swims. The list is varied and endless, ensure however, the exercise is also appropriate for your dog. - Choose the right time. Best for you and your dog not to run during the hottest time of the day. Dogs deal with heat loss mainly by panting and tend not to be able to keep cool as easily as their owners. If your dog has a thick coat, try to avoid exercising in the hot midday sun. Also take a bottle of water and a collapsible dish with you to keep the pet hydrated. - Get fit and have fun. Mix it up, turn away from the usual long distance running and incorporate your dog in the exercise. Try turning your dog's favourite games into a workout with the simple 'fetch' workout, for example after warming up throw a ball whilst waiting for your dog to return, start squatting, lunging or perform some press-ups. Or even try football with your collie or tug-of-war with your terrier.
Researchers including an Indian origin scientist have suggested that by increasing your daily coffee consumption you can reduce your type 2 diabetes risk. The study led by Shilpa Bhupathiraju, lead author and research fellow in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health found that people who increased the amount of coffee they drank each day by more than one cup over a four-year period had a 11 per cent lower risk for type 2 diabetes than those who made no changes to their coffee consumption. In addition, the study found that those who decreased their coffee consumption by more than a cup per
day increased their type 2 diabetes risk by 17 per cent. The researchers analyzed data on caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, and caffeinated tea consumption from 48,464 women in the Brigham and Women's Hospital-based Nurses' Health Study (1986-2006), 47,510 women in Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2007), and 27,759 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2006). Participants' diets were evaluated every four years with a questionnaire, and those who self-reported type 2 diabetes filled out additional questionnaires. A total of 7,269 cases of type 2 diabetes were documented.

For over a decade, Desjardins Financial Security surveys have shown that money is a key stressor for most Canadians. They know it's a problem but they're reluctant or unable to break their bad financial habits. Top financial planning experts have called this phenomenon the ostrich syndrome. The fact is financial ignorance is not bliss. Why do you think people avoid financial planning? Many Canadians believe that our social safety nets, namely the Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security, will be able to support them during retirement. But these safety nets will become depleted as the number of retirees continues to increase over the next 20 years. We all hear this warning and we're told that it's our responsibility to save for retirement. The problem is that most people are unable to picture what retirement looks like. If you can't picture it, how can you prepare for it? So, you just don't and avoid it all together. How do you overcome the fear? First of all, take ownership for your past financial behaviours and your future financial goals. Be honest with yourself and know that anything is possible with a plan. Next, write down your short- and long-term personal and financial priorities. Your financial goals will support your personal goals, so the two should be aligned. One of the main reasons why we are so stressed out by money is because our personal and financial goals are un-balanced. Once we have our plan, what's next? Now you have to have the talk. It's important to make time for regular financial discussions with your partner
and some key family members. It's also a good idea to work with a financial advisor who can facilitate the conversation and provide professional and unbiased objectivity. They'll also have access to other professionals who can step in with solutions, like tax and estate planning. Next, set up regular financial meetings say once a month or once a quarter to review your financial priorities and goals to ensure that you remain focussed. What would you say to someone who is convinced that it's too late to fix their financial situation? Honestly, its never too late to make financial adjustments even if they appear out of control. You can dream big and make it happen. It just means that you have to get organized, ask for help and start making informed choices. You'll find that the sooner you can get your finances in order, the sooner you'll be able to achieve your dreams. Veteran lyricist Gulzar received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honour in cinema given annually by the Government of India for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema, here Saturday. The 79-year-old was overwhelmed and thanked a string of "gurus" and musical geniuses of the past and current generation for contributing to his success story. Clad in his trademark white kurta pyjama, Gulzar turned towards the audience to take a bow before he approached the stage to receive the Swarna Kamal, Rs.1 million and a shawl, conferred upon him by President Pranab Mukherjee at the Vigyan Bhavan here. The multi-faceted yet humble talent, who started his career in 1956, is the 45th winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which is constituted in the name of Dadasaheb Phalke - the director of India's first full-length feature film "Raja Harishchandra", made in 1913. Gulzar took to the mike, requesting "a moment to get his breath" as he was overwhelmed with the love and appreciation of his work as a lyricist, director, screen-writer, producer and poet. "There are few moments in life when for a writer, whose work is to play with words, doesn't know what words to choose to express gratitude and thank people. I want to say that no person will reach this stage without the support of several people. "I was lucky that when I started, I met many people from whom I learnt - my guru Bimal Roy, who picked me from nowhere and took me along with him... there was Salil Chowdhary, Sachin Dev Burman, Hemant Kumar...I was
lucky to get such gurus," Gulzar said in his acceptance speech. Born in 1934 in Punjab in preindependence India, Gulzar got his first break as a lyricist in Bimal Roy's "Bandini". He has penned a multitude of songs in his glorious career and also contributed to several films as script, story and dialogue writer. His directorials include "Mere Apne", "Koshish", "Aandhi", "Kinara", "Khushboo", "Angoor", "Libaas", "Meera", "Lekin" and "Maachis". Gulzar, whose real name is Sampooran Singh Kalra, also thanked R.D. Burman, Laxmikant, Kalyanji, Madan Mohan, Illayaraja and Pandit Ravi Shankar, for shaping his career in many ways. From the new generation he mentioned A.R. Rahman, crediting him with "taking Indian film music to the global map". He thanked filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, whom he calls his son, and names like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Shantanu Moitra for infusing films with quality music in these times. Among the film directors, he mentioned Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Shaad Ali and his own daughter Meghna. Meghna sat in the audience at Vigyan Bhavan, shedding tears of pride for her father, until he finished his speech and returned to the seat to give her a comforting hug. The 79-year-old was conferred the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan in 2004. He has won a number of National Film Awards and 20 Filmfare Awards. At the 81st Oscars in 2009, he won the Academy Award for best original song for "Jai ho" with A.R. Rahman.
Asshu Trikha's directorial venture "Koyelaanchal" has been cleared with an A-certificate by the censor board and veteran actor Vinod Khanna, who plays a key role in the film on the coal mafia, Tuesday, said that he doesn't believe in censorship. Expressing his views on the certification issue, he said: "I don't believe in censorship until and unless there is something against the nation, then it should be valid. In such extreme cases censorship should come into the picture." One of the biggest stars of the 1980s and 1990s, Vinod praised the current scenario saying "filmmaking has progressed" over the years, but added that still there is a dearth of "good scripts". The film also starring Suniel Shetty is coming out May 9. The 67-year-old, who has been part of about 150 movies and avoids
public platforms, said he attended the "Koyelaanchal" event because the film is good and it should be promoted well. "I think promoting films is a trend and its part of your contract. I got a little late as I was in the midst of elections. I feel this is a great film, which needs to be pushed. It's a kind of film which has no A-listers in it," he said at the film's event. Talking about the theme of the movie, he said: "Not many people are aware that the coal mafia is the oldest mafia of this country and it's been here for 200 years. People didn't talk about it as it was a private sector, but when it got nationalized things came out. Coal scam is the biggest issue in front of our country." Sky is the limit for actors, he feels. "This is one field where you can explore as much as you want to. Acting is nothing but a whole experience of coming up," he said.

Relationships
Parents generally just want to feel special and respected
We can choose our friends but we are pretty much stuck with the family we have or the family we marry into. Even for some who dont feel the tie as strongly as others, our families make up our DNA and are the strongest influence in our lives. Even if you feel you dont need them anymore, or that you are better off without them. You just simply cant cut that tie and still feel whole. Blood is thick! They in many ways are a part of who you are. The harder you try to distance yourself from them, the more obvious your familial and blood traits will begin to appear for you. As much as wed like to blame others for the state of our family relationships or lack thereof, I believe that it is up to us girls to keep the bond strong. A family can develop only with a loving woman as its center. It is a blessing to come from a culture where we have tons of relatives who will ignore hospital visiting times and tons of people who will drop whatever they are doing, to show support in times of need. All this involvement and closeness has its challenges, can get annoying and does create a desperate need for autonomy and space sometimes. As women, we are made to be the nurturing ones, with caring maternal instincts. It is feminine energy that is creative and expressive and hence more equipped to help bridge and be the catalyst for keeping family alive. Here are a few thoughts to help you improve and if necessary repair these relationships. Transitioning to adulthood Parents generally just want to feel special and respected. Their input and suggestions used to be unquestionable at one time and it can be hard for them to accept that we are adults with our own priorities and families even now, but taking the time to show love, give time and be respectful is imperative in maintaining a loving relationship with them. Often as a daughter-in-law, you can have a huge influence on how your husband relates with his parents, so be kind. Part of being an adult is taking responsibility for our own lives and giving up the entitled way of being we may have had with our parents where we assume that our parents need to put us first. Remember that they too are human and have their own needs and priorities. Take responsibility for your own life and let them know that you are there for them when they need you in whatever way. When they offer to help, try not to dismiss it. All they need is to feel needed. Take the time to teach them how to use technology and smart phones, to help them stay connected. Communicate with Respect A reaction is automatic and not thought through consequentially, whereas a response is chosen. Between an action and its reaction there is a space, and in that space is the opportunity to choose. Responding is using that space to make the choice to do or say something that will have a positive effect on your relationship with the family member in question. Accept the truth; communicate it in the right intensity in a calm manner with the person involved. If you feel that a distance has grown, you may be able to bridge the gap by sharing how you feel. Focus instead on the positive."Leave the past behind and control yourself from repeating past incidents. Try not to be bossy and respect other peoples way of doing things and not imposing your way as the only way" is one of the most valuable pieces of advice my mother gave me. Accept, Forgive & Embrace When was the last time you connected with each member of your family? In this day and age, it is quite sad that we are in minute-to-minute contact with people we hardly know through our smart phones and social networking, but weeks will pass and we go without getting in touch with our parents or siblings. Have an attitude of forgiveness and letting go. Think of the fights you had with your siblings or cousins when you were kids, even the ones where blood was drawn and bones were broken. They were always forgotten minutes after, so adopt the same policy-it is the only one that will work. Often the key to your own learning, acceptance, forgiveness and freedom lies in resolving the presenting issues with the other person, who quite honestly is just a blessing, a mirror and an opportunity for personal growth.

It shouldnt surprise you that a vast majority of nasty bouts of food borne illnesses are contracted after a brush with eggs. Thats why eating from that carton of eggs, even a few days past the best before date can be risky business, particularly if you consume them raw. 2. Deli Meat
I love alfalfa sprouts, but if I buy them for home, I know that using them quickly is vital to my health. More so than leafy greens, sprouts spoil and become rife with bacteria microbes quicklyespecially if you accidently leave them out overnight. 5. Oysters
Do you know where E. coli originates? In the case of animal proteins, like ground beef, the bacteria lingers in the intestines of cattle and can make human consumers very ill if the meat isnt processed or handled properly. Always be sure to consume ground beef prior to expiry and cook it completely to avoid food poisoning. 8. Fresh Berries
With hard cheeses, like cheddar, its often safe to cut off the outer edge of mold and consume a fresh piece. However, softer cheeses, like brie, are not to lucky to escape bacterial Listeria monocytogenes growth. 10. Chicken
We hear so many news stories about E. coli and Listeria in processed deli meats. These bacteria are prevalent in packaged meats of this kind and even the sliced variety you ask your butcher to slice off for you at the grocery store. As a general rule, deli meats are best consumed within the week they are purchased. 3. Mixed Greens
Many people wouldnt slurp an oyster as is. However, oysters gone bad are not only particularly foul smelling and slimythey can cause a seriously fatal bloodstream infection known as V. vulnificus bacteria if consumed past expiry. 6. Shrimp
It isnt hard to differentiate expired raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries from fresh, plump versions. Spoiled berries lose their shape and break down quickly, developing a slimy, watery surface thats prone to Cyclospora, a fecal food
Like oysters, raw or even frozen shellfish of any kind is prone to bacterial contamination right from the moment its removed from the ocean. So be especially concerned with fresh or frozen shrimp as far as storage, handling, and consuming before its due

Automotive
The Rogue's all-independent suspension and electric power steering gets some assistance in controlling the Rogue's ride. A new function, Active Ride Control, directs the CVT and engine responses to smooth the Rogue's body motions after it crosses a bump, Nissan says. Active Trace Control can also apply a brake or adjust torque to an inside wheel to aid cornering. The new Rogue steers with more heft, damps its ride better, and has a more substantial and composed feel than the Rogue Select in every way we can think of. Seventeen-inch wheels with all-season tires are standard; 18-inchers are an option on the top Rogue. Nissan Rogue comfort and seating With just marginal growth in wheelbase (up just 0.6 inches), the Rogue hasn't gained considerable interior room, which keeps it positioned at the smaller end of the compact-crossover class. It's 1.2 inches taller, though, and doors open more widely. As with the Altima, Nissan delivers better seating comfort with especially dense seat foam, and finds a bit more room for back-seat passengers, thanks to a sliding and reclining second-row seat. The front seats also borrow a page from the Leaf playbook, with heating controls that warm up in more sensitive contact areas. A power driver seat is available, but like the Ford Escape, there's no power offered for the front passenger seat--though it does fold down for more carrying capacity. Maybe the most unusual decision is to offer a third-row seat in the Rogue, though there's not a big increase in passenger space. Since the second row can be adjusted on a 9-inch-long track, the third-row seat has usable leg room--but only if you're in the awkward stage between booster seat and driving yourself. And even then, it's a temporary, short-distance solution at best. Nissan Rogue safety and features All Rogues come with standard curtain airbags and stability control, as well as a rearview camera and tire pressure
The 2014 Nissan Rogue gets mainstreamed in all the right ways, though engine noise and the teensy third-row seat are minor letdowns. The Nissan Rogue is new for the 2014 model year, and it's also a carryover. Confused? Here's the short version: the new 2014 Rogue is the crossover you want to own, a spacious and safe ute that rides on a completely new architecture. The old model, carried over for 2014 as the Rogue Select? It's the one you'll rent or lease, if you must. You'll want to skip by the outdated version for a few reasons. The new Rogue is more handsome, more flexible, more comfortable, and handles better--and it delivers class-leading gas mileage. Nissan Rogue styling The Rogue embraces a new styling theme, one that dresses up its familiar proportions with more interesting surfaces. Remember the last Rogue's crazy grille treatments? They're gone, replaced by a more contemporary look that doesn't venture off the crossoverSUV homestead. The grille's more tidy, the headlamps are more interesting, and the side sculpting gives it a more meaty stance. Inside, the new Rogue has a more handsomely finished interior, better organized, and finished with higher-quality materials. Nissan Rogue performance and gas mileage The Rogue returns with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder and continuously variable transmission found in the first-generation crossover. Power output's still fixed at 170 horsepower, and acceleration is mediocre at best. It's not the CVT's fault entirely, but the transmission does put the Rogue in a noisy stretch of its powerband pretty often. A few pounds of extra firewall damping would be well-received. Where the Rogue excels is in gas mileage and in road manners. The EPA-rated 33 mpg highway looks great on paper, but the 28 mpg combined of either the front-drive or all-wheel-drive Rogue is even better in real life.
monitors. Nissan's Easy Fill tire alert is also included. And while the federal government hasn't yet crash-tested the new Rogue, it's earned Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) status from the insurancefunded IIHS. Safety options include a surround-view camera, blind-spot monitors, a lane-departure warning system, and a forward-collision alert system. The base Rogue S is priced from $22,490, not including destination charges, and comes with power windows, locks, and mirrors; an AM/ FM/CD player with a USB port; Bluetooth with audio streaming; and a rearview camera. The all-wheel-drive version of this model is priced from $23,840. The $24,230 Rogue SV ($25,580 with AWD) adds 17-inch wheels; a power driver seat; satellite radio; automatic climate control; pushbutton start; and NissanConnect, which enables use of smartphone apps like Pandora. For $28,070 ($29,420 with AWD), the Rogue SL gets Bose audio; navigation; a power tailgate; surround-view cameras; 18-inch wheels; heated front seats; and leather upholstery. Options include third-row seating; runflat tires; a panoramic sunroof; those advanced-safety features; and LED headlights The Rogue embraces a new styling
theme, one that dresses up its familiar proportions with more interesting surfaces and frankly, a more massmarket appeal. Nissan's done a positively Honda-like job in the past few years, evolving styling in gradual steps to remove the odder flourishes of the past. Remember the last Rogue's crazy grille treatments? They're broomed. There's a more straightforward grille bracketed by angled chrome bars and braced by LED running lamps. The side and fender sculpting's borrowed some lessons from the wild Juke--and clearly has seen the latest Santa Fe and CX-5, from the look of the chamfered taillamps. All the details push the Rogue's corners in more evocative directions than the plainer first-generation crossover. Inside, Nissan has delivered a more handsomely finished interior, one with higher-quality materials. It's not damning it with faint praise, to call it elegantly ordinary. It's laid out for quick perception, with round knobs for climate control and audio framing a center stack with an LCD monitor, and a cowl over the gauges balanced out by a slight dip over a pair of slim vents. It's not wildly conceived with all-touch interfaces or asymmetrical lines or a shower of single-function buttons--and we're kind of in love with it for that reason.

Antonio Tuivuna managed to slot in a goal, but it was not enough as the Fiji U20s football team succumbed to a 4-1 loss to their New Zealand counterparts at North Harbour Stadium. It was their second loss in three days following a 5-0 thumping to the same side in the opening friendly match-up on Sunday. New Zealand took an early lead 2-0 at half-time via Monty Patterson who scored twice from dead ball situations in the first spell. Despite being a man down, Fiji pulled one back via a free kick two minutes into the second half by Tuivuna before the Kiwis wrapped up the clash via late goals from Andrew Blake and Tomislav Trbhovic in the last 10 minutes of the match.
