3.18- CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEM

PAGE 1/2
CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEM
1 GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
1.1 GENERAL
The purpose of this installation is to hinder rust formation and corrosive attack upon
the underwater hull.
The system has little influence upon marine growth on the hull.
The protection system consists of a rectifier that supplies current to a number of
anodes, which are placed on the hull, but electrically insulated from it. The current
flows through the sea water to the hull which is connected to the other rectifier
terminal.

2 DESCRIPTION
Refer to figure 1.
The cathodic protection system consists of:
1 aft automatically controlled rectifier 400 A (PCECR02),
1 fwd automatically controlled rectifier 200 A (PCECR01),
2 remote control panels (PCEJH01) (PCEJH02),
6 permanent anodes (PA1) (PA2) (PA3) (PA4) (PA5) (PA6),
4 reference electrodes (RE1) (RE2) (RE3) (RE4).
2.1 AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLED RECTIFIER
The purpose of the rectifier is to continuously monitor the level of cathodic protection
on the submerged metal surface and to adjust the amount of current supplied to the
anode to maintain the protection at a pre-set optimum level.
The front panel has an ON/OFF switch meter or anode voltage, current and reference
electrode readings.
The rectifier is controlled by the average of port and starboard signal or let the
rectifier be controlled by the electrode giving the highest value.
2.2 REMOTE CONTROL MONITOR
For remote monitoring of anode current voltage and reference potentials, the values
are transmitted as 4-20 mA analogue signal or via a transmitter. In the latter case the
rectifier can also be controlled from the remote panel.
2.3 PERMANENT ANODE
2.3.1 DISC ANODE
The equipment consists of an anode, an anode base plate with cofferdam and a
dielectric shield (an epoxy coating).
2.4 REFERENCE ELECTRODE
Electrode
Electrode with contact and fastening bolt moulded in rubber. The rubber
holder includes a packing ring and conical sealing.
Base plate
The base is machined with a recess to fit the reference electrode flush to the
shell plating.
In the centre of the base plate a conical hole is carefully machined for the
conical rubber sealing of the reference electrode.
3 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
3.1 OPERATIONS
The potential that is measured between the built-in-zinc reference electrodes and the
hull controls the current supply to the anodes. The maximum secondary voltage of the
transformer / rectifier is usually 24-50 V. The voltage is controlled by the reference
electrode signal to obtain current output.
3.1.1 CATHODIC PROTECTION CONTROL IN PRACTICE
Measuring hull potential carries out the anode current control, and deviations between
the hull potential and the adjustable set point gives rise to regulation.
The total current output gives cathodic protection as monitored by the reference
electrode.
3.1.2 RECTIFIER OPERATION
The ON/OFF switch at the front is for the secondary (anode) circuit only. As long as
the auxiliary power is connected to the rectifier, checks and readings can be done at
the control panel.
The ON/OFF switch connects the transformer and rectifier unit to the mains. When
the green indicator lamp is ON, the power is connected. Whenever the control panel
is switched OFF and ON the process logic controller will start with the values stored
in the memory.
Control terminal display:
The control terminal and display is operator interface to the control system
functions. Altering the default values for set point, setting alarm and
controlling parameters can be done from this terminal; Manual operation of the
rectifier can also be done using an internal reference.
The control terminal is set up in the ship-function mode.
