1. SCOPE This Guide defines requirements for the design, fabrication, and performance of field-erected, induced draft cooling towers. Package cooling towers for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning and small cooling water systems will be covered by a separate specification. 2. REFERENCES The following publications form a part of this Guide. The references cited with dates in this Guide were used in its development. For all references which have been superseded, revised, and/or corrected, the user of this Guide is obligated to determine if the latest versions of the cited references have any impact on the content of this Guide or its use. 3. GENERAL 3.1 Cooling towers shall be designed and supplied in accordance with the requirements of this Guide, EGE 00-C-4, the requirements specified on EGE 13-D-20, and shall be a CTI Code Tower. The design shall comply to applicable local, state, or other regulatory requirements, such as those of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). 3.2 The tower shall consist of a minimum of two cells, unless otherwise specified in the project specifications. 3.3 The supplier shall assist Mobil in determining the optimum tower orientation with respect to the prevailing summer wind direction, tower geometry, and design. 3.4 3.5 The sound level from a cooling tower (fan plus water noise) shall comply with EGE 00-B-5, Group V. All electrical equipment shall be in accordance with the area classification specified on EGE 13-D-20.

3.6 Where cooling towers are subjected to icing; fans, motors, and gears for crossflow towers shall be designed to rotate in either direction. Gears shall be designed for lubrication in either direction. 3.7 Galvanized material specified for cooling tower service shall be hot dipped with a minimum of 0.76 kg of zinc per square meter (21/2 oz per square foot) in accordance with ASTM 123. Damage to the galvanized coating shall be repaired in the field by the supplier with Valspar 13-F-12 (M2-7 Inorganic Zinc Rich) or equivalent material, subject to Mobil approval. 3.8 Nonstructural members, such as fill, casings, and louvers, shall not be utilized to furnish part of the structural strength of the tower. 4. DESIGN 4.1 Fill

4.1.1 Fill shall be assembled and arranged in sections to permit easy handling and removal from the tower. The fill shall be properly supported, and crossflow splash bars shall be fastened to prevent warping or buckling under all expected operating or icing conditions.

4.1.2 The fill in counterflow towers shall be designed to withstand a minimum live load of 244 kg/m 2 (50 lb/ft ) at 21C (70F).

4.1.3 Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene are used as fill materials. Treated lumber is used as fill support. 4.1.4 PVC splash-type fill shall have a minimum thickness of 1.2 mm (50 mil), and film-type fill shall have an average thickness of 0.3 mm (12 mil). 4.1.5 exist. 4.2 Film-type fill shall not be used where potential hydrocarbon leaks, into the cooling water system,

Casing

4.2.1 Tower casings shall be of single-wall construction utilizing fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) with ultraviolet inhibitors. Casing joints shall be lapped and sealed to prevent loss of water. 4.2.2 4.2.3 Casing panels shall be constructed of FRP in accordance with CTI Std 131. The casing FRP material shall have a flame spread rating of 25 or less.

4.2.4 Corrugated panels shall be designed with corrugations on 100 mm (4 in.) centers and minimum 2 2 weight of 2.44 kg/m (8 oz/ft ). Flat panels shall have a minimum thickness of 6 mm (1/4 in.). 4.2.5 The casing panels shall be nailed to the columns and braces with Type 316 stainless steel serrated nails which include neoprene and Type 316 stainless steel washers. 4.3 4.3.1 Louvers Louvers shall be constructed and supported as follows:

(a) Corrugated FRP louvers shall be 4.8 kg/m (16 oz/ft ) minimum weight supported on 1.22 m (4 ft) centers, maximum. FRP louvers shall be constructed in accordance with CTI Std 131 and shall have a flame spread rating of 25 or less. (b) Treated lumber louvers shall be 19 mm (3/4 in.) minimum thickness supported on a one meter (3 ft) center, maximum. (c) Louver assemblies shall be designed to prevent warping or sagging and shall rest on supports. Hanging louver designs are not acceptable. 4.3.2 Towers that may be subject to icing conditions shall have retainer bars on the louvers to prevent damage to the fill from sliding ice. 4.4 Partitions

4.4.1 Watertight partitions shall be provided between cells of the cooling tower to permit taking any one cell out of service without affecting operation of the other cells. 4.4.2 Longitudinal partitions or wind walls shall be provided to minimize loss of water during high winds. Partition wall locations shall not affect fan operation.

4.4.3 Partition wall material shall be constructed of corrugated FRP with 2.44 kg/m (8 oz/ft ) minimum weight. Partition wall panels shall be constructed in accordance with CTI Std 131 and shall have a flame spread rating of 25 or less. 4.5 Structural Framing

4.5.1 Anchored columns located on the tower periphery shall extend to piers and shall be anchored to the piers by Type 316 stainless steel or coated cast iron baseplates with anchor bolts provided by others. 4.5.2 All columns shall be shop fabricated and of sufficient length to permit extension below the curb. Interior columns shall be extended and field fitted to the basin floor. Any column that is field cut shall be treated with a suitable wood preservative. 4.5.3 The main framing members shall be fitted and through bolted at each connection. Nails are not permitted for connecting framing members. Load transfer shall be accomplished by shear connectors. All structural connections, splices, and joint connectors shall be in accordance with CTI Std 119. 4.5.4 All castings shall be coated with epoxy.

4.5.5 As an alternative to wood, the supplier may propose other materials subject to Mobil review and approval. 4.6 Drift Eliminators

Unless otherwise specified on EGE 13-D-20, the drift eliminator system shall be designed to limit the loss of water to a maximum of 0.005 percent of the water circulation rate. The supplier shall guarantee the drift in accordance with the latest CTI test method. Other requirements of drift eliminators are that they be: (a) (b) (c) Constructed of PVC for a flame spread rating of less than 25. Designed to remain rigid at all operating temperatures and to resist deterioration. Designed and constructed to permit easy handling for cleaning and/or replacement.

Drift eliminators shall be installed tightly to all walls and around columns/beams to prevent air bypass. 4.7 Water Distribution System

4.7.1 The distribution system shall be designed to provide an even distribution of water over all portions of the tower cell and shall allow for individual cell shutdown. 4.7.2 The distribution header in a counterflow tower shall be provided with a cleanout connection, consisting normally of a removable plug located at the end of the header on the bottom. 4.7.3 The hotwater distribution basin in a crossflow tower shall be designed to be self-draining and nonclogging. It shall be easily accessible for cleaning and maintenance. Basin covers shall be provided for all hot water distribution basins. 4.7.4 The distribution system for a crossflow tower shall include balancing valves on each cell. The valves shall be designed for positive shutoff. 4.7.5 All piping headers, laterals, and crossovers shall be galvanized steel, high-impact polyvinyl chloride, or fiberglass reinforced plastic.

4.7.6 The distribution piping shall be protected with a standpipe or other pressure relief system to protect against excessive pressure. 4.7.7 The supplier shall terminate all inlets to the distribution piping with flanges. Carbon steel flanges through NPS 24 (NPS = nominal pipe size, inches) shall have an ASME B16.5 rating. Flanges over NPS 24 shall have and ASME B16.47 rating (series B is preferred). 4.8 Fan Assemblies

4.8.1 The fan assembly shall consist of fan, gear speed reducer, drive shaft, motor, couplings, guards, and supports. 4.8.2 Fans shall be of the high-efficiency, low-speed propeller design. Blades shall be individually fastened to the hub in a manner permitting manual adjustment of the blade pitch. Prior to shipment, fan blades shall be statically balanced. 4.8.3 The natural dynamic resonant frequency shall not be any multiple of a harmonic of the operating fan speed. Fans shall not be operated within 10 percent of a critical speed. The tip speed of fan blades shall not exceed 60 m/s (12,000 fpm). 4.8.4 Fans larger than 3.7 m (12 ft) in diameter shall have a minimum of six blades.

4.8.5 When fan hub and propeller are of dissimilar metals, they shall be insulated from each other to prevent electrolytic corrosion. 4.8.6 Drive shafts shall be composite, tubular, single piece design. Drive shaft assemblies including disks, bolts, and nuts, shall be dynamically balanced at full load speed to ensure smooth operation. All materials shall be corrosion-resistant and not sensitive to chloride stress cracking. 4.8.7 A manually reset, externally energized, vibration cutout switch shall be provided for each fan drive to automatically interrupt the supply of energy to the driver. It shall be mounted on the mechanical equipment assembly outside the fan stack. The switch shall be the double pole/double throw type, explosionproof. 4.8.8 Gear speed reducers shall be provided in accordance with CTI Std 111 and the following requirements: (a) The gears shall be the spiral bevel reduction type designed for the maximum fan pitch angle at the design fan speed. The minimum service factor shall be 2.5 of the motor nameplate rating. All bearings exposed to axial loads shall be thrust bearings. (b) Gear box vents and oil fill pipe, complete with level indicator, shall be located outside the fan stack. All components of the system, including oil filler lines, shall be connected to the gear box by wire reinforced neoprene oil-type flexible tubing. The tubing shall be properly secured to avoid sagging or vibration. 4.8.9 Motors shall be in accordance with EGE 33-B-9 and with the following requirements:

(a) Motors shall be mounted horizontally outside the fan stack at a location easily accessible for maintenance. (b) Motor power shall meet fan requirements at design pitch angle and speed, at minimum ambient air temperature.

(c) Two-speed or reversible motors shall be provided when specified on EGE 13-D-20. Adjustable speed motors shall be bid as an option if specified on EGE 13-D-20. 4.8.10 Couplings shall be Type 304 stainless steel including bolts and bolt inserts; rated for a minimum service factor of 2.5 of the motor maximum startup torque and designed for heavy-duty shock load conditions. Couplings bored larger than the manufacturers nominal rating are subject to Mobil approval. 4.8.11 Coupling guards shall be supplied between the motor and fan stack. Two piece coupling guards shall be provided. Guards shall comply with OSHA standards (referenced under Code of Federal Regulations; see Sec. 1910.219) and local regulatory requirements at the installation site. They shall be fabricated from spark-resistant materials and shall be of 1.6 mm (1/16 in.) minimum thickness. Bolts or screws, where used, shall be 9.5 mm (3/8 in.) nominal diameter minimum. Guards shall be fabricated from solid metal sheet or plate. Guards fabricated from expanded metal, perforated plate, or woven wire are not acceptable. 4.8.12 The fan, gear, and driver shall be supported on a unitized steel support base. The base should be bolted to the tower structural columns. The support shall be of a rigid design, hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, and designed to ensure permanent alignment of the motor, drive shaft, and reduction gear. Mounting plates for the motor and gear shall be provided with jack screws to aid in alignment. 4.8.13 (11/4 in.). 4.8.14 (a) (b) 4.8.15 Fan tip clearance shall range between a minimum of 19 mm (3/4 in.) and a maximum of 32 mm Fan windmilling prevention shall be accomplished by the following means: Crossflow towers shall include an electromechanical brake on the motor. Counterflow towers shall include a backstop on the gear reducer. Fan stacks shall conform with the following:

(a) Fan stacks shall be constructed of fiberglass reinforced plastic and bolted to the tower framework. Velocity recovery stacks shall be provided and shall have a minimum height of 4.3 m (14 ft). (b) Each fan stack shall have two equidistant observation ports. Covers for the observation ports shall be easily removable and shall be fastened to the fan stack with stainless steel bolts and wing nuts. The openings shall be a minimum of 150 mm (6 in.) in diameter to enable sound pressure level measuring devices to be inserted. (c) Fan stacks shall have removable segments of sufficient size to allow removal of all mechanical equipment components. 4.8.16 Fan decks and water distribution decks shall be designed for a live load of 2.87 kPa (60 psf). They shall be reinforced for any concentrated or distributed dead loads such as fans, drivers, and maintenance equipment used to service and handle them. The fan deck shall be fabricated from pressure-treated redwood lumber (tongue and groove) with a minimum thickness of 38 mm (11/2 in). 4.9 Tower Access

4.9.1 The tower shall be equipped with at least one full stairway at one end and a stairway or ladder with safety cage at the other end. The stairway and ladder shall be designed to reach within 150 mm (6 in.) of grade level. Stairway, ladders, guardrails, and walkways shall conform to OSHA requirements (referenced

under Code of Federal Regulations; see Sec. 1910.24 and 1910.27). Where applicable, a covered stairway may be considered as protection against icing. 4.9.2 Ladders, stairways, and walkways shall be arranged with sufficient space to give safe access to both the interior and the top of the tower. 4.9.3 One endwall of the tower shall be equipped with a treated lumber stairway rising from the level of the cold water basin curb to the fan deck. Stairs shall be 45 degrees, 0.9 m (3 ft) wide with 200 mm (8 in.) rise and run. Landings shall occur at 1.8 m (6 ft) elevations. Guardrails, kneerails, and toeboards shall be 50 mm 100 mm (2 in. 4 in.). Guardrails shall be through-bolted to the stairway posts. A hot-dip galvanized vertical steel ladder with safety cage per OSHA recommendations shall be provided at the other end of the tower. Ladder shall rise from the level of the cold water basin curb to the fan deck. 4.9.4 The fan deck of the crossflow tower and the perimeter of the hot water distribution basins shall be surrounded by a treated lumber 50 mm 100 mm (2 in. 4 in.) guardrail, kneerail, and toeboard conforming to OSHA standards. 4.9.5 Each cell of the crossflow tower shall be equipped with vertical ladders extending downward from the fan deck level to a walkway above the waterline in the hot water distribution basins. Ladders shall be constructed of treated 50 mm 100 mm (2 in. 4 in.) eased-edge lumber. Walkways shall extend out to the splash box cover and flow-control valve. 4.9.6 All access doors in a crossflow tower that pass through the endwall of the tower at the cold water basin curb level shall be of watertight construction and mounted in substantial frames that are securely bolted to the tower framing. A 610 mm (24 in.) wide treated wood walkway shall extend the full length of the crossflow tower at the curb level. Hinged doors shall also be provided in each partition between cells. If the floor of the cold water basin is 1.2 m (4 ft) or more below the walkway, the walkway shall have 50 mm 100 mm (2 in. 4 in.) guardrails, kneerails, and toeboards. 4.9.7 Each cell of a counterflow tower shall have a 760 mm (30 in.) square lift off access hatch in the fan deck floor and a ladder leading down to a 0.9 m 1.83 m (3 ft 6 ft) landing at the drift elimination level. Each landing shall have a lift off hatch for entry to the top of the fill and distribution level. 5. MATERIAL 5.1 Lumber Quality

5.1.1 Cooling tower lumber shall be supplied in accordance to CTI Std 103 and/or Std 114. The preferred lumber is redwood or Douglas fir. Indigenous lumber, proven in cooling tower service for a minimum of ten years, may be offered with complete specifications for Mobil review and written approval. 5.1.2 Redwood shall be inspected, approved, and certified by the California Redwood Association. This service shall be performed by an equivalent agency for the inspection/selection of other types of lumber. 5.1.3 The size, grade, specification, and design of all supports, beams, columns, bracing, and connections shall be based on stress values given in CTI Std 103, or the equivalent, for the lumber selected. 5.1.4 Dense No. 1 Douglas fir or redwood lumber of select structural grade, or better, shall be used for framing members such as columns, diagonals, girths, fan beams, floor joists, panel studs, louver posts, fan decks, interior partitions, distribution basin floors, stairways, and platforms.

5.2.1 All structural lumber materials shall be inspected and graded prior to fabrication and preservation treatment. The materials shall be inspected by the Redwood Inspection Service or the equivalent. The inspection report shall be submitted for review prior to shipment. 5.2.2 All members constructed of lumber shall be treated for biological attack with a wood preservative. The type and method of lumber treatment shall be in accordance with CTI WMS 112 and shall be specified on EGE 13-D-20 by the supplier. Copies of treating reports shall be supplied to verify compliance with CTI WMS 112. 5.2.3 5.3 5.3.1

Copper base alloys shall not be used in an ammonia environment for the following conditions: In aqueous phase ammonia content in excess of 100 ppm. In vapor phase partial pressure in excess of 0.345 kPa abs (0.05 psia).

5.3.3 All materials in contact with the circulating water shall have a minimum design temperature of 60C (140F). 6. PERFORMANCE TESTING 6.1 Preparation for Testing

Mobil shall make all preparations for an on-site performance test, and shall give the supplier at least 30 days notice of the date on which the acceptance test is to be conducted. 6.2 Procedures for Performance Test

The cooling tower shall be tested for thermal performance within the guarantee period. The acceptance test, as well as the analysis and evaluation of the test data, shall be performed by one or more representatives of the Cooling Tower Institute in accordance with CTI Test Code ATC 105 (Parts I and II), and witnessed by the manufacturer and Mobil. A drift loss test shall be conducted by CTI when specified on EGE 13-D-20. 7. EQUIPMENT DATA 7.1 Proposal Information

The following data shall be included in the proposal: (a) Completion of EGE 13-D-20.

(b) Tower performance curves, showing cold water temperatures versus wet-bulb temperatures for cooling ranges of 8.3C (15F), 11.1C (20F), 13.9C (25F), 16.7C (30F), 19.4C (35F) at the design range at 90, 100, and 110 percent of the design water circulation rate. (c) (d) Tower characteristic curve showing KaV/L versus L/G for the design conditions. Guaranteed pressure loss versus flow curve for spray nozzles when proposed.

(e) Fan performance and power requirement curves. The design data point at required actual m /s (acfm), blade pitch, and horsepower shall be clearly identified. (f) Drawings showing dimensions of the tower. The drawings shall include basin details, stairways, ladders, access ways, and location of water connections. (g) Technical specifications for all valves.

(h) Description of the fill material, shape, method of installation, fire-resistant qualities, and compatibility with other materials. The ability of the fill material to withstand temperature shock, as well as attack by hydrocarbons and other contaminants, shall also be described.

(I) Description of the casing material, method of construction, strength-to-weight ratio, type of jointing, and sealing of joints. (j) Description of the louver material, method of construction and support, winterization (when required), and means of self-draining. (k) (l) Materials and details of construction of partitions, structural framing, and drift eliminators. Materials and description of the water distribution system, including the cleaning facilities.

(m) Technical description of spray nozzles. Design of nozzles and attachment (collar, ring, etc.) shall be clearly defined in the proposal. The supplier shall state where this design has been used successfully in similar installations. (n) (o) (p) (q) 7.2 Technical description of fan assemblies. Vibration switch specifications. Technical specifications for lumber and wood preservation treatment. Completed Vendor Equipment Sound Level Report Forms from EGE 00-B-5, Appendix B.

Documentation

After receipt of the purchase order, the following documentation and certified drawings shall be furnished by the supplier on an agreed-upon time schedule: (a) Overall dimensions and elevations of all assemblies and subassemblies, including all clearances.

(b) Location (elevation and orientation) of every connection to the equipment: nozzles, brackets, clips, supports, and lifting lugs. (c) Loading diagram and stress analysis, including all structural calculations for wind loads, seismic loads, and live and dead loads, with structural connector analysis.
