TR-900 Series

TR-900 Series

SEMI-PERMANENT RELEASE NEW OR RECONDITIONED MOULD PREP GUIDE

POLYESTER MOULDED PARTS
STEP 1 Remove all contaminates and previously used releases from mould surface with the TR-905 SOLVENT CLEANER. Saturate cloth with the 905 Solvent and wipe onto sections or areas of the mould. Allow sufficient time while area is still wet to follow and wipe dry with a clean cotton cloth. Turn and change cloth frequently to absorb and pick-up contaminates. REPEAT if necessary until MOULD SURFACE is thoroughly cleaned and wiped dry. On NEW or RECONDITIONED MOULDS that have been buffed with a polishing or buffing compound, first water wash to remove the buffing compound residue and wipe completely dry. Then clean thoroughly with the 905 SOLVENT CLEANER as mentioned above. Refer to product data sheet. STEP 2 Apply 1-2 coats of TR-910 sealer (2 coats for uniform coverage or if porosity may be present). Allow 15-20 minutes cure between coats and 30 minutes after final coat, preferably longer if schedule permits. See product data sheet for application. STEP 3 Apply 2 coats of TR-900 Release (4 coats if TR-910 Sealer is omitted). Allow 5-10 minutes cure between applications and after final coat. Wet or dampen a clean lint-free cotton cloth with the release and apply an even wet coat on a small area of the mould surface (approx. 2 x 2). Avoid heavy application on cloth that is heavily soaked or dripping wet. While surface is still wet, gently wipe dry with a separate clean, dry cotton cloth. Turn or change cloth as needed to one end of the mould and over-lap slightly each small previously applied area until mould is complete. Apply the 2nd or subsequent coats in the same manner. See product data sheet for additional information. Recommend trial of the TR-920 or TR-930 as replacement for the TR-900 where MOULD GEOMETRY requires some horizontal pull when demoulding and added slip action is required. STEP 4 Apply the TR-900 Series Release again after the first 2 pulls or releases. Then proceed with your multiple Releases and apply only as needed setting up a schedule you have achieved or determined when re-application is required. Any minor scratches or abrasion marks will have to be treated again at first notice. Apply another coat of Release on affected area. Any patched or repair areas should be taken through all steps and sufficient over lap of area to provide uniform release & coverage. Allow TR-910 Sealer longer cure (1-2 hours at room temperature) on patched or repaired areas. NOTE Always use a lint-free all cotton cloth (preferably white) when applying the solvent cleaner 905, sealer 910 & 900 series release. No synthetic cloth blends and use separate rags for the cleaner, sealer & release. Avoid any contamination of rags and/or release container. The container must be kept closed when not in use. Material is moisture sensitive and will exhibit premature reaction if container is left open excessively. Avoid contamination when refilling previously used containers or transferring to other containers.

If the plug has 600grit wet & dry scratches or finer, you may start with 3M Marine High Gloss Cutting Compound using a3M 5700 White Compounding buff pad. 2. This should then be followed with the 3M Finesse-it Liquid Finishing Compound, using the 3M 5705 Yellow Polishing buff pad. At this stage the Polyester surface should have a high gloss finish. a) If the plug has been finished with Urethane Paint, it should be allowed to cure for a minimum of seven days before any further work is performed on the paint surface. (May be post cured to save time. Check with the paint manufacturer for specific details). If the finish achieved from spraying is not good enough to mould from, use a fine grade paper to remove any fine orange peel. This should be followed by buffing with 3M Marine High Gloss Cutting Compound, and then finished with 3M Finesse-it Liquid Finishing Compound.

3. Once the desired finish has been achieved, the plug surface should then be washed thoroughly with clean soapy water to remove all polish and dust residue. 4. Wipe the mould over with TR-905 Mould Prep Cleaner. This will remove any traces of solvents from the surface. 5. Apply two coats of TR-910 Semi-permanent sealer. Allow at least 15-20 minutes between each application. (As with all release systems, the longer between coats the better they cure) 6. Following the application of the TR-910 sealer, apply three coats of TR-900 Semi-Permanent Release, allowing a minimum of 5-10 minutes between each coat. (As with all release systems, the longer between coats the better they cure). 7. Follow this up with one coat of TR-102 regular paste wax, or TR-108 Basic Non Silicone Paste Wax. (With intricate or complex shaped plugs, a PVA release agent may be used as insurance against hang-ups. If the customer chooses to use PVA, then TR-108 Basic Paste Wax should be used, as it does not contain silicones.) 8. It is recommended that all such finishes are left for at least 24 hours before proceeding. (except if using PVA. The PVA should be applied and allowed to dry, just prior to gelcoating to ensure no dust is allowed to settle in the PVA film) 9. The Tooling Gelcoat may now be applied.

Mould Preparations
Once the mould has been removed from the plug, the decision needs to be made on which release system is to be used. Large moulds take a long time to laminate. This means that the mould will have gelcoat sitting on it for a day or so, before a tie layer is applied. For this reason, it is not recommended that the semi-permanent systems are used, due to the possibility of Pre-Release in warmer weather.

Hulls & Decks New Moulds (low production runs)

It is recommended that new moulds should be left to cure for at least two weeks before any finishing or preparation work is commenced on them. (Follow cure and hardness specifications, of Gelcoats manufacturer) If the mould finish is as required, follow release procedures below. If the mould requires additional work to achieve an improved finish, use the following procedures. 1. Buff the mould using 3M Mould and Tooling Compound. 2. If required, this may also be followed with 3M Finesse-It Finishing Compound, which will produce a uniform exceptionally high gloss finish, eliminating swirl marks. 3. Thoroughly wash the entire mould with clean water to remove any compound residue and wipe completely dry. 4. Clean the entire surface with TR-905 mould prep cleaner and dry off with a second cloth before the cleaner.

5. Apply two coats of TR-910 Semi Permanent Sealer. Allow 15-20 minutes cure between coats and 30 minutes after final coat. (preferably longer if schedule permits) 6. Apply 4-5 coats of TR paste wax. (if using TR-102 regular, or TR-104 Hi Temp, allow to dry (5-10 minutes) and polish with a soft cloth). Note: It is recommended allowing an hour or more between coats, to permit solvent evaporation and the carnauba base to set. Allow to stand for at least 24 hours. Then apply additional coat of paste wax and leave for a minimum of one hour prior to commencing initial layup. If temperatures are below 25C, longer cure time should be allowed. 7. With intricate or complex shaped moulds, a PVA release agent may be used on the first couple of parts as insurance against hang-ups. If the customer chooses to use PVA, then TR-108 Basic paste wax should be used, as it does not contain silicones. 8. Apply 1 coat of TR paste wax between each of the first 4-5 parts to condition the mould. (Then apply as needed. Frequency will vary depending on mould design and materials used) 9. Once the mould is broken in, you may change over to TR-210 Self-Stripping Liquid Wax. This product is applied by cloth, sponge or by spraying. The mould should appear wet when applied. Allow to dry, and polish off with a clean soft cloth. Using TR-210 will keep the mould free of wax build up and provide a high gloss finish. Note: Liquid waxes must be shaken regularly during application, due to separation between the solvents and waxes.

Non-Skid Areas
10. With all non-skid areas apply TR-214 Regular Liquid Mould Release. This produce is less volatile than the TR-210. It is slower drying and will penetrate the deep crevices within the patterns. Work into deep areas with a stiff bristled brush. Allow to dry and buff off with a clean soft cloth. (Repeat treatment to these areas with 3-4 coats). 11. Apply one additional coat of TR-214 Regular Liquid Mould Release between the first 4-5 parts. Note: Liquid waxes must be shaken regularly during application, due to separation between the solvents and waxes. 12. There after apply as necessary or when parts get tight.

New Moulds (high volume production runs)

It is recommended that new moulds should be left to cure for at least two weeks before any finishing or preparation work is commenced on them. If the mould finish is as required, follow release procedures below. If the mould requires additional work to achieve an improved finish, use the procedures mentioned previously. 1. Clean the entire surface with TR-905 mould prep cleaner and dry off with a second cloth before the cleaner dries. 2. Apply two coats of TR-910 Semi Permanent Sealer. Allow 15-20 minutes cure between coats and 30 minutes after final coat. (preferably longer if schedule permits) 3. Apply 2 coats of TR-900 Semi Permanent Release. Allow 5-10 minutes cure between coats. Note: It is recommended allowing at least 30 minutes before commencing initial layup. As with all release systems, the longer they are allowed to cure, the better they will perform. (With intricate or complex shaped moulds that require some horizontal pull or added slip when de-moulding, then TR-920 should be used in place of the TR-900.

Finished Parts
Depending on what state the finished parts are, will depend on what compounds should be used on the finish product. Presuming the products have a good finish from the mould, only a final clean and shine will be necessary. 1. the most universal product that will provide an excellent result is TR Gel Gloss. The larger trade pack is TR-500. The product will clean and shine the surface. 2. For a higher grade finish, use TR-510 Poly Sealant. This product will put a long lasting Polymer Coating over the entire surface. It will leave a high gloss and provide an excellent barrier against UV weathering.
