Research Paper

Jiarra Anderson
I chose the civil engineering field. My junior year I learned Civil engineers design
things. These might be roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, or water
supply and sewage systems. They must consider many factors in their designs, from
the costs to making sure the structure will stay intact during bad weather. This is one
of the oldest types of engineering. Many civil engineers manage people and projects.
A civil engineer may oversee a construction site or be a city engineer. Others may
work in design, construction, research, and teaching. There are many specialties
within civil engineering, such as structural, construction, environment, and
transportation.
I am still very interested in civil engineering. The projects we had Really made
me really fall in love with this type engineering. One project that support my interest
was when did the bridge project. It was fun; it was hands on, but with a challenge to
it. Another project was when we did the lunchrooms on Google sketch up. That was
fun because it was computer base and I like using the computer.
This field of engineering is a good fit for me because I need a lot of creative
thinking and I am a creative thinker. I want to go to college and major in civil
engineering. I love working as a team and in engineering you really have to do that.
One college I choose is university of Cincinnati the requirements for ACT scores
is a 21 or better. The last act test I took I had a 15. So that means that I'm going have
to study and retake the test. The SAT scores have to be 1500 or higher. I don't think
the sat test is really mandatory to be accepted in university of Cincinnati. Your GPA
has to be a 'B' average or higher. I have a b average in my GPA. For the credit
requirements UC says The UC Center for Credit Evaluation evaluates how your
credits translate to credit at the University of Cincinnati. They only evaluate your
overall transfer credit. After you are admitted, the UC college which offers the
program will determine how accepted transfer credits are applied toward degree
requirements
The next college I picked was Ohio State University. The ACT score has to be a
26. Right now I have a 15 score which means I have to retake the test but study this
time. The sat score has to be 25/75th percentile. Your GPA has to be a 3.00 or higher
and if you have a 4.00 you will get first consideration. I have a 3.7, which means I'm
only 3 away to having a 4.0. The credit requirements are to have 24 credits
The last school I picked was university of Toledo. The ACT requirement is 22. I'm
not that far away from 22. The sat is not required at this school. Which makes it
easier for me cause that means I'm not going to have to take the test. You GPA has
to be 2.7 or higher. I have past that GPA. There are no credit requirements.
A little background I learned about civil engineering. With simple tools and
mathematics he created a monument that stands to this day. His greatest
contribution to engineering was his discovery of the art of building with shaped
stones. Those who followed him carried engineering to remarkable heights using skill
and imagination. Vitruvius' De architecture was published 1AD in Rome and survived
to give us a look at engineering education in ancient times.
Military engineering the first engineers were military engineers, combining
military and civil skills. During periods of conflict the engineers made and used
instruments of war such as catapults, battering rams, towers, and ramps to aid in
attacking their enemies' forts & encampments and also to defend their own. During
the periods of peace, they were involved in many military and civil activities such as
building fortifications for defense against further attacks, roads, bridges, aqueducts,
canals and cathedrals. The construction and hydraulics techniques used by the
medieval engineers in China, Japan, India and other regions of the Far East were far
more sophisticated than those of the medieval European engineers.
Machu Picchu, Peru is considered a civil engineering marvel. It was built high in
the Andes Mountains assisted by some of history's most ingenious water resources
engineers. The people of Machu Picchu built a mountain top city complete with
running-water, drainage systems, food production and stone structures so advanced
that they have endured for over 500 years.
