OBSERVE A LESSON (WITH PERMISSION FROM THE TEACHER CONCERNED)
INVOLVING THE TEACHING OF ANY MATHEMATICS TOPICS AT LEVEL 1
During my school base experience at Sekolah Kebangsaan Baggol Chicha, i have chosen to observe a class in order to fulfil my assignment task. I have entered the class with Mr Abdullah Lowe, my mentor at the school. He teaches 1 Cemerlang. 1 Cemerlang is the second class in Level 1 at the school. Mr Abdullah is very supporting person and i feel comfortable to work with him. Before i do the task, i used to discuss with him about my observation. After we discuss, he agrees to take me with him into his class on Wednesday, 19 August 2009 at 11.15 to 11.45am. The observation is to identify what topics of Level 1 mathematics and what is the teaching method that was used in the lesson. Actually, during my school base experience, the school was busy in handling an exam for Year 6 because the UPSR examination is around the corner but thanks to Mr Abdullah for giving me a chance to complete my task. Mr Abdullah himself also a Assistant Teacher for the Mathematics Department of the school.
IDENTIFY WHERE THE TOPICS FIT INTO THE LEARNING AREAS IN THE MATHEMATICS KBSR CURRICULUM. Mr Abdullah was teaching Shape and Space during my observation. The learning areas that i found base on the Year 1 Mathematics Curriculum Specifications are: Learning objectives Suggested teaching and learning activities Learning outcomes Points to note Vocabulary The learning areas also include Three-Dimensional Shapes (3D Shapes) and Two Dimensional Shapes (2D Shapes). In learning objectives, the student will taught to understand and use the vocabulary, describe and classify common 3-D and 2-D shapes. While for the suggested teaching and learning activities, student will identify solid shapes in real life such as around the school and in the classroom. Students will build model using one type of solid shape and in combination with other solid shapes using readily available solid shapes, match boxes, cans, play dough and plasticine. Learning outcomes can make the student will be able to name solid shapes, describe features, sort and make models of solid shapes. For the points to note, informal classification and students will be able to articulate the reason for classification and encourage them to form creative design. Vocabulary that consist in this topic are shape, solid, side and more.
IDENTIFY WHAT TEACHING APPROACHES / TECHNIQUES / METHODS DO YOU THINK THE TEACHER IS USING. The teaching approaches that Mr Abdullah used in his class are teacher-centered, pupil centered, class teaching and exercise. Mr Abdullah started the lesson by giving some introduction about the topic he will teach. This is to make the student understand and stay focus on the lesson. He gives some example about 2D and 3D shapes. This shows that he used teacher centered method. Beside, after giving the introduction, he began to start his lesson. He used Mathematics Curriculum Specification for Level 1 in his lesson. While he was teaching, the students give full attention to his words. This method is class teaching. Another teaching approaches that he used is pupil centered. He always asks the student when he was teaching. This is to make sure that his student understand what he teaches and not just listen to it. After a long lesson, Mr Abdullah used the last 10 minutes of the lesson time to give some exercises to the student. He wrote a few questions on the whiteboard and the student copy it and solve it. So, the lesson did not just an empty lesson because Mr Abdullah always gives his student some questions to make sure they understand.
DESCRIBE HOW YOU WOULD TEACH THE LESSON DIFFERENTLY IF YOU WERE THE TEACHER. Based on my observation, i think Mr Abdullah had used a good teaching method. If i were the teacher i will add a few methods to make my lesson complete and more interesting. I will use a diagram or a picture and a solids model to make the student more understanding. This is because the student at Level 1 cant imagine the solid shapes truly. May be some of them can do it. I also will teach the student by using group teaching method. I found that group teaching can be more effective because the student seem to be more fun while learning with their friends. While for the weak student, i will use individual teaching. In class, when giving the some question to solve, i can go the weak student and give them more effective explanation. So, they can understand the lesson. My observation in Mr Abdullahs class, have show me many things that i not realize before. As example, i always think that teaching approaches is not important in lesson, but after observed him, i start to learn how important it was.
DESCRIBE THE KEY MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS THAT NEED TO BE TAUGHT BEFORE THIS LESSON (I.E. PREREGUISITE KNOWLEDGE). The key mathematical concepts include previous skills, previous knowledge, and previous experience. Every student is not the same. Not all of them have the skills, knowledge, and experience. The student at Level 1 need to give more attention to make sure they get understand about the lesson. In previous skills, the student must know about 3M. 3M is reading, writing and counting skills. This is the basic skill for every student. When the student knows about this skill they will learn more easily. Beside, previous knowledge also important to the student. As a teacher, we have to give introduction to them about the topic we want to teach. So, when we start the lesson, they can understand and give a full focus to the lesson. The last concept is previous experience. The teacher must relate the topic in their daily life. For example, the topic shape and space can teach the student to identify the solid shape in real life. They can related the things around them and make and example of solid and try to pronounce them. So, they will easily understand the topic not just in the class but everywhere they go.
TASK : During your one week stint in school, you are required to :
a) Observe a lesson (with permission from the teacher concerned) involving the teaching of any mathematic topics at Level 1. b) Identify where the topic fit into the learning areas in the mathematics KBSR curriculum. c) Identify what teaching approaches/technique/methods do you think the teacher is using? d) Describe how would you teach the lesson differently if you were the teacher? e) Describe the key mathematical concepts that need to be taught before this lesson (i.e prerequisite knowledge). f) Write a report on your observation based on the guidelines enclosed with task, as well as the learning you acquired from this experience.

APPRECIATION
First of all, i would like to thank to Miss Teoh Sooi Kim and Dr Lee Wai Heng for giving me a chance to complete this task. For this task, i have to do an observation during my School Base Experience. I have no experience in doing the observation before so this is my first time. I try my best in order to complete the task. This task is not easy to do because the school that Ive chosen was in a preparation for the UPSR examination. So, many of the teachers used to give full commitment to the Year 6 student. I also want to say thank you to all my friends and classmates for their cooperation during completing my task. Finally, this task had gave me a new experience and i feel so lucky to be a teacher.
