dismissalofanindictmentandallchargesagainstRalphPecorale,alawyerinNewYorkand
notedU.S.Pokerplayer.Inan82countindictmentin2010,Mr.Pecoralehadbeenaccusedof
unlawfulconductrelatedtoanallegedmortgagefraudschemeinBrooklyn,NewYork.
ThedismissaloftheindictmentandallchargesagainstMr.PecoralewasadirectresultofMr.
Altchiler'sworkonthecase.Indeed,Mr.AltchilerwasabletoworkwithAssistantDistrict
AttorneyRichardFarrellandto"openhiseyes"toevidencethatshowedMr.Pecorale's
innocence.Inapressrelease,Mr.Altchilersaid:
"Ihaveneverhadamoment'sdoubtofRalph'sinnocence,andamgratefultheBrooklynDA
dismissedthecaseonitsownmotion.It'snoteasyconvincingthegovernmentitiswrongina
caseofthismagnitude,butIfinally,literallyafteryearsoftrying,wasabletoconvincethe
governmentwewererightandthatdespitean82countindictment,and18countsagainst
Ralph,thecasehadtobedismissed.RichFarrell,whohasahighlevelofexpertiseincases
likethis,andtrulywantedtoknowthetruth,waswillingtolistentome,andreviewhundreds
ofpagesofdocumentswehadprovidedtohispredecessorsonthecase,andtheflawed
evidenceandtheoryoftheindictment,thatdrovethiscasetotheeveoftrial.Ratherthan
simplyletajurydecidethecase,Mr.Farrelltookactiontoensuretherewouldbenotrial.All
toooftenprosecutorsareunwillingtotakesuchaction,andwethankMr.FarrellandDistrict
AttorneyThompsonfortheirwillingnesstobepersuaded,andhaltthemomentumofthecase
towardtrialandthecaseitself.Theysayyoucan'tunindictadefendant,butyoucan.Youjust
