Section B: Statistics [60 marks]

7 A new mobile communication service provider intends to carry out a survey of its
potential customers to find out the amount of their current monthly mobile phone bills.
This allows the provider to come up with affordable subscription plans for its various
groups of customers.

(i) Describe how to obtain an appropriate sample of 200 people to take part in this
survey. [3]

(ii) Describe one advantage of the method suggested in (i). [1]

8 A series of mathematics textbooks consists of 6 books. The number of alphabetical and
numerical misprints in each book, are assumed to have independent Poisson distributions
with mean 1 and 2 respectively.

(i) Find the probability that the series of mathematics textbooks contain a total of 12
misprints. [3]

(ii) Find the probability that a randomly chosen book containing exactly 5 misprints
has at least 4 alphabets misprints. [3]

9 (i) A group of 11 people is to make a journey to a restaurant. As none of them drives
and they are running late, they intend to take taxis. The taxis called are from
different companies and each taxi can only sit a maximum of 4 passengers. Find
the number of ways in which the 11 people may be allocated to the least number
of taxis. (You may assume that the arrangement of people within each taxi is not
relevant.) [2]

(ii) At the restaurant, these 11 people are to be seated at two adjacent tables with seats
arranged as shown below.

Find the number of possible arrangements if there is no restriction. [4]

10 It is estimated that from 12 a.m. to 2 a.m., the proportion of drivers on the road who have
consumed alcohol is p. During that period of the night, the probability that a driver would
meet with an accident if he has consumed alcohol is 0.05, whereas the probability for him to
meet with an accident if he does not consume any alcohol is 0.002.

(i) Draw a tree diagram to illustrate the above scenario, showing the relevant
probabilities on each branch. [2]

(ii) A driver is selected at random during that period of the night. Write down in terms
of p, the probability that he meets with an accident. [1]

(iii) Assuming that p =0.1 and 2500 cars travelled on the road from 12 a.m. to 2 a.m.
of a certain night. Estimate the number of accidents that will occur during this
time. [1]

(iv) A traffic policeman on duty at 1 a.m. saw a car crashing into a lamp-post. Find the
exact value of the largest p such that probability that the driver of this car has
consumed alcohol is at most 0.3. [3]

11 In this question, you should state clearly all distributions that you use, together with the
values of the appropriate parameters.

La Wen Boutique makes costumes for performing arts groups in secondary schools. The
length of a pair of boys pants in centimetres made by the boutique is modelled as having
normal distribution with mean cm and standard deviation cm. Given that 50% of the
boys pants are each longer than 85 cm and 20% of the boys pants are each shorter than
80 cm, calculate the values of and . [4]

The length of a pair of girls pants in cm made by La Wen Boutique follows a distribution
N
( )

82,5 . Find the probability that the total length of 2 pairs of girls pants is at most
170 cm. [2]

Suppose that each pair of pants costs $0.35 per cm in length, find the probability that a
pair of girls pants cost more than a pair of boys pants. [2]

12 In the Commando Unit of Singapore Armed Forces, 99.5% of the 25-year old NS men
pass the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) while 75.0% of the 35-year old NS
men pass the IPPT.

(i) Find the probability that, of 25 randomly chosen 25-year old NS men in the
Commando Unit, at least 24 pass the IPPT. [2]

(ii) Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that, of 500 randomly chosen
35-year old NS men in the Commando Unit, not more than 380 of them pass the
IPPT. [4]

There are n 35-year old NS men commandos taking their last IPPT (in the service cycle).
60 of them are expected to pass the test. State the value of n. Find the mode of the
number of 35-year old NS men in this group of n commandos who will pass the IPPT. [3]

13 The table shows the monthly sales and advertising expenditure with regards to a brand of
washing powder.

Monthly sales
$y (in thousands)
6.70 12.20 20.00 23.60 26.80 15.80

(i) Given that the estimated regression line of y on x is y =1.786 +4.271x, show that
the value of k is 5.00, rounded off to 2 decimal places. [3]

(ii) Calculate the product moment correlation coefficients between x and y, and
explain in relation with a scatter plot whether your answer suggests that a linear
model is appropriate. [3]

(iii) Find the least square regression lines of x on y. [1]

(iv) The retailer wants a monthly sale of 14 thousand dollars for the brand of washing
powder. Use an appropriate regression line to find the best estimate of the
advertising expenditure. Explain your choice of the regression line used. [3]
