~ 1800s History Project ~

Focus Question: Who were the significant people that shaped Australian
colonies?
Due Date: Friday the 23
rd
of May
Im researching: ___________________________________________________.
You are to focus on the role that a significant individual or group played in shaping a colony; for
example explorers, farmers, entrepreneurs, artists, writers, humanitarians, religious leaders,
political leaders, and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. You will need to investigate
the contribution or significance of an individual or group to the shaping of a colony in the
1800s.
Questions for establishing historical significance:
- Did the person bring about an important change?
- Did it affect a large number of people?
- How deeply did it affect people's lives?
- Is the person remembered by people in the past or people today?
- Was the person important for people in the past and/or our understanding of the
past or present?
Your Task: to present a historical report on a significant person to Australia from the
1800s. You need to include
1. Introduction (facts, a general overview of information, location in Australia, birth and
death dates, interesting information)
2. Family history (brothers, sisters, parents, Australian, migrant, convict, career)
3. Early life (schooling, where they lived, hobbies, work)
4. What they are well known for (why are they historically significant? See list above)
5. Impact on modern Australia (how has their actions, decisions, options etc influenced
Australians today?)
6. Personal opinion (one to two paragraphs)
You will need to present your information on a double sided A3 piece of card that
includes your information that is neatly presented, illustrations/photos and a map.
This project will be displayed in our classroom but you will need to present your findings
to a small group of your peers.
We have already spent time researching this in class, and they will be given some time
in class to work on this, but most will need to be completed at home.
It is not a race to see who can finish first. Please put effort into your project and hand it
in knowing it is an example of your best work.
NOTE TO PARENTS
Please only help the students with the following;
o Further explanation of instructions.
o Finding appropriate reference in books or on the internet.
o Translation of difficult terms into simple language(orally only)
o Explanation of terms.
You are not expected to do any of the project. Your child should be able to do it alone. If
you feel tempted to help with an illustration, or tell your child what to write, ask yourself
Will this help my child to learn?
Good Luck!
