The most interesting part in this novel is where Dr. Jekyll becomes Mr.

Utterson and Mr. Richard nfield are walking in the court in front of the
laboratory at the back of Dr. Jekyll!s house. "hat they have seen certainly
shocks them and thus answers many unanswered #uestions.
The most interesting incident in this novel in my opinion is the night
when $a %arlotta lost her voice and the chandelier came crashing down. &
think this part is the most interesting because it is the part that builds up to
the clima'. (rom the beginning) the story has been in suspense. Then) the
dynamic changes and the *pera +host shows his true colour. He cuts the

Dr. Henry Jekyll) a respected and distinguished doctor had an evil side
to his character. He had both the good and evil. He was morally upright) a
good and generous man. He e'perimented on potions and turned himself
into Mr. Hyde who was opposite in character of Dr. Henry Jekyll. Mr.
Hyde was ruthless and cruel and showed his personality in the incident
when he ran over a girl on the street. He did not stop to help. He also
killed -ir Danvers %arew in cold blood. He disappeared after this
incident.
"e should learn from this story that all person) people) human have a
conscience. "e know what is right and what is wrong. Dr. Henry Jekyll

Hyde) felt that being cruel was all right. "e should learn that being evil
would one day cause us to lose control of one!s sense of right and wrong.
&n the end) Dr. Henry Jekyll) unable to control the evil Hyde) took his own
life.
The moral lesson in this novel is) never ever 3udge a book by its cover.
2eauty is skin deep and thus if you want to trust someone) do not do it by

heart. -o you cannot 3udge someone from the outer appearance. rik is

out of revenge. He punishes others when they offend him. (or e'ample)
he kills Joseph 2u#uet 3ust because Joseph talks about his ugly

This novel highlights many themes) but one of the themes that & find
most interesting is the theme of friendship. The theme of friendship in this
novel is made obvious by two characters) Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr.
Utterson.
Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Utterson come from the same background.
They are both educated and they both come from the upper, class society.

Dr. Henry Jekyll.
This novel highlights many themes) but one of the themes that & find
most interesting is the theme of friendship. The theme of friendship in this
novel is made obvious by two characters) The .ersian and Raoul de

The friendship between these two characters) however does not show

However) since the .ersian sees that Raoul is in dire need to save
%hristine) he kindly helps him and even lets himself be in danger 3ust so
that Raoul can rescue %hristine. Their friendship is short but very

& like Mr. Utterson the most in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Mr. Utterson
ahs high principles. He refuses to draft Dr. Henry Jekyll!s strange will)
but he remains a good) loyal friend to Jekyll. This is admirable. Mr.
Utterson does not condemn his friend when he suspects that Henry Jekyll
is hiding something terrible. &nstead) he wants to help. He safeguards
Henry Jekyll!s good name. he is also honourable and trustworthy. He does
not open Dr. $anyon!s letter although he is e'tremely curious about the
contents. & also like Mr. Utterson because he is brave and sensible.
6lthough he is soft, hearted) he can be aggressive when necessary. He
gives the order to break into Dr. Henry Jekyll!s study. Unlike Dr. $anyon)
Utterson has the strength of mind to deal with the truth about Dr. Henry
Jekyll and Mr. dward Hyde.
The character & like the most in The .hantom of the *pera is Raoul. He
is brave and daring. He is willing to go against his elder brother for the
sake of love. & like this spirit of boldness and adventure. & also like his
passion for what he believes in. he loves %hristine and therefore he is

horrified when he witnesses how Mr. Hyde tramples over a little girl one
night) and immediately runs to help. Then he aggressively pursues
dward Hyde and demands that dward Hyde make amends for his
cruelty. Richard nfield stands up to dward Hyde even though dward
Hyde fills him with disgust and it is obvious that dward Hyde is
dangerous and violent. Richard nfield is concerned when he notices that
dward Hyde!s che#ue carries Henry Jekyll!s signature. However) when
he recounts the incident to his uncle) the lawyer) Mr. Utterson) he avoids
mentioning names because he understands that he does not know the
whole story. Richard nfield is being wise and discreet here.
&n The .hantom of the *pera) & admire the .ersian because he is
intelligent) wise and brave. He is committed to defeating the .hantom
because the .hantom has become evil. The .ersian is also determined to

himself) as well as the guilt of committing evil deeds such as murder. The
novel suggests that beneath the surface of respectability and goodness
within society) lies evil we cannot imagine. &n order to survive) this evil
finds ways to mask itself as goodness.
The main values highlighted in The .hantom of the *pera are trust and
respect for every individual. rik is so ugly that everyone shuns him.

&n my opinion) the character in The .hantom of the *pera who is
determined is rik) the *pera +host. He is very determined on getting
what he wants) even if it means killing those who are in his way. (or

Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are contrasting characters in the novel
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. They are very different in terms of appearance
as well as personalities. Dr. Henry Jekyll is a pleasant looking and kind
gentleman) but Mr. dward Hyde is an unnaturally ugly and cruel man.
Dr. Henry Jekyll likes to do good by alleviating suffering for the sick and
weak. *n the other hand) Mr. dward Hyde likes to terrori;e the weak.
He knocks down a little girl and then instead of helping her up) he
tramples over her. $ater) he mercilessly clubs an old man to death. Dr.
Henry Jekyll himself sums up their contrasting characters when he states
that he has more than a father!s interest in dward Hyde whereas dward
Hyde has more than a son!s unconcern for Henry Jekyll.
&n The .hantom of the *pera) rik and %hristine are willing to
sacrifice for love. rik releases %hristine to marry Raoul) and %hristine
agrees to be rik!s wife in order to save Raoul from a torturous death.
There is also similarity in terms of interest as they both share a liking for
the opera. However) they have contrasting characteristics. rik has a
twisted personality due to being re3ected by society and his own mother.
He takes delight in threatening people) putting fear in them and watching
them suffer. %hristine on the other hand) is kind and compassionate. -he
is even able to show pity towards rik. Her love for Raoul is pure and true
whereas rik!s love for her is obsessive and controlling.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a story about the struggle between good and
evil in oneself. 6s the story unfolds) we see the conflict between these
two opposing natures in Dr. Henry Jekyll. He is a kind) pleasant) and

ugly. 6t first) Dr. Henry Jekyll en3oys being Mr. dward Hyde but after a
while he begins to transform into Mr. dward Hyde without taking the

Henry Jekyll!s evil side overpowers his good side and Henry Jekyll dies
as dward Hyde.
The .hantom of the *pera deals with the theme of love. The story
revolves around a love triangle between rik <the phantom=) Raoul and
%hristine Daae. Raoul is from a rich family and %hristine is a poor opera
singer. They fall in love with each other) but rik does not allow them to

Dr. Jekyll!s final disappearance in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is his own
doing. Jekyll likes being popular and respected.) but he finds society!s
moral code rather tiresome. He decides to make up his own rules) but his
rules finally destroy him. Jekyll chooses to meddle with science and
choose to e'periment on himself. He tries to separate his @evil! and @good!
sides. He wants to be both the virtuous Dr. Jekyll and the worldly Mr.
Hyde) through whom he can en3oy forbidden pleasures and without
involving the good Dr. Jekyll. 2ecause he dabbles in matters that he has
incomplete knowledge of) Dr. Jekyll is never really in control of things
e'cept for the choices he makes. Mr. Hyde eventually takes over his entire
personality) and Jekyll is destroyed forever.
rik greatly influences this story of The .hantom of the *pera. &t is
true that people!s reaction to his deformity caused him to become evil) but
that is outside the events of this story. Here) rik has caused everyone to
fear him. He manipulates people and events. He ensures %hristine will
sing by threatening $a %arlotta and then causing a terrible accident in the
opera house which even kills someone. rik torments and threatens
%hristine) so that she is always nervous and afraid. rik kidnaps %hristine)
forcing Raoul and the .ersian to hunt him. %hristine influences the ending
with her genuine sympathy for rik. Her compassion leads rik to release
his captives. 2ut it is rik who finally ends his misery by taking his own
life.

&n Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) the main message is that we should take
responsibility for our morality. "e are accountable to one another for our
actions because we are all human beings. The writer suggests that the
human personality is made up of a comple' blend of impulses to do good
as well as evil) and it is impossible to separate them in order to avoid
responsibility for our actions and behaviour. "e need to accept our
strengths and control our weaknesses. -cience cannot replace morality
because science deals with the physical) whereas man is more than a
physical being. -cience does not have all the answers to the comple'ities
of the human personality.
The main message in The .hantom of the *pera is that appearances
often hide people!s real nature. "e often wear masks to hide our true
selves. "e are afraid people would despise us if they saw us as we really
are. &n rik it is the other way around. rik!s physical ugliness masks his
sensitive) loving nature) his genius and creativity. .eople are too horrified
by his deformity to look into his heart. -o rik ends up wearing a real
mask and becoming a phantom) not a real man. 6pparently) appearance
dominates reality. The writer shows how unfair and dangerous this is in
rik!s case. .eople are cruel to him because he is ugly. Unfortunately)
rik decides to fight back with cruelty too.

The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego Mr. Hyde makes me

Enowing this) & can identify my strengths and failings) and learn how to

me that & am responsible for my actions) both good and bad. &nstead of

unfair to 3udge people by their appearance. Their appearances may not

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde makes me think about an important issue
concerning every human being A the struggle between good and bad
within us. This is what & like most about this novel. &t makes me think.
This is a serious problem) and we must figure out to deal the with it.
Jekyll!s solution is to pretend it does not e'ist. He separates the good and
bad within his personality) and allows each to do as it wants. He wants to
be virtuous as well as to indulge in forbidden pleasures. This is
hypocritical. &t does not solve our problem. 6 real solution would be to
learn to deal with the truth) and control the evil within us even as we
e'ercise our goodness.
&n the .hantom of the *pera) what & like most is the psychological
aspect of the story. The novel gives an insight into human psychology. &
like trying to figure out why rik is the way he is A how re3ection finally
turns him into a monsterF why he is so possessive of %hristineF and so
3ealous) so violent and so cruel. &t is interesting to see how emotions) if we
let them get out of hand) can control our mind and behaviour. This novel
teaches me a lot about humanity. &t shows that we are emotional as well as
intellectual beings. verything is connected) and we must learn how to
keep the different parts of our personality in balance with one another.

The chracters in Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde are portrayed #uite
realistically. Mr. Utterson) for all his goodness) is old) cut, and, dried and
rather set in his ways) not a typical hero. However) it is Mr. Utterson who
restores order in society after Dr. Jekyll!s horrifying e'periment threatens
to shatter their orderly life. Mr. Utterson is a believable hero. Dr. Jekyll is
also portrayed realistically. He is shown to have his good points) such as
generosity) kindness and intelligence) as well as a ma3or weakness 8 his
taste for forbidden pleasures. 2eing scientific, minded) curious and
confident in his ability) it is no surprise that Dr. Jekyll gives in to the
temptation to separate hbis moral weaknesses and place them in a physical
body that is a corrupted form of its original.
rik in the .hantom of the *pera is realistic in his response to the
circumstances in his life. .eople even his own mother) has always treated
him like a monster. 6lthough we do disagree with rik!s decision to
punish society by threatening and manipulating people) we can empathise
with him. "e can understand how constant re3ection and cruelty may have
hardened his heart. $erou'!s portrayal of rik provides a good insight into
the mind of someone who decides to take the law into his own hands
because he sees that society is un3ust and cruel. 6s for %hristine and
Raoul) although they respond to life as real people would) their portrayal
seems cliched. They seem to be typical characters out of a fairy tale.

/0. Chose one of the novels above. Based on the novel that you have chosen, write briefly on any set of contrasts or o11osites you have observed in
the novel you have studied. Your answer should not be less than 50 words.
*hen +hantom of the ,1era r. "ekyll and (r. )yde
The main contrast in the .hantom of the *pera is between appearance
and truth. The mask reflects this contrast. rik uses a real mask) whereas
the writer implies through the motif of the theatre and acting) that society
uses figurative masks to hide its true nature. &n rik himself) there is this
contrast. rik!s mask hides his ugliness) and his ugliness masks his
genius. 2ut as soon as we see the contrast) we are confused. "e wonder
who the real rik is. 2rilliant singer) or monsterG His ugliness seems to
reflect his wickedness) and the mask he wears as the 6ngel of Music
seems to hide this truth. $ater) we see rik as vulnerable and pitiful) and
even noble when he sacrifices his love for %hristine.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde highlights two main contrasts. The first is
between truth and appearance. Jekyll appears to be one thing) but as Hyde)
he is something totally different. Hyde masks the reality of Jekyll!s moral
failure to deal with his weaknesses. Hyde shows us Jekyll!s refusal to
accept responsibility for his moral weaknesses. Jekyll appears to be a
champion of society) but actually) he rebels against society!s laws) and
even tries to destroy order within society by refusing to be responsible for
his crimes. The second contrast in this novel is between good and evil.
The writer suggests that the human personality is made up of two strong
but opposing forces. These forces are always warring to have their own
way.
