PROPOSED AREA OF RESEARCH I have selected Non traditional machining processes as my broad area of research. Advanced Material Removal Processes represent one of the technologies, which emerged after the Second World War to cope up with the demands of sophisticated, more durable and cost competitive products. With the advent of new materials such as metal-matrix composites, super-alloys, ceramics, aluminates and high performance polymers etc. and the stringent requirements to machine complex geometrical shapes with high precision and accuracy, a strong need existed for the development of advanced material removal processes. The processes in this category differ from conventional processes in either utilization of energy in an innovative way or, in using forms of energy that were unused for the purpose of manufacturing. Many countries are currently investing in manufacturing related research and development. The top materials include semiconductors, and advanced materials. Today, semiconductor manufacturing is a mature industry generating $300 billion in revenue, with manufacturing facilities in over 20 countries. Todays information processing needs are powered by silicon-based integrated circuits (ICs).The processes that are being explored varies from micromachining to integrating different energy based nontraditional manufacturing in one. Delicate materials that were previously difficult to be machined, higher aspect ratios and unchanged physical, chemical and metallurgical properties are the result of advanced manufacturing processes.
