PRODUCT DATASHEET
The performance and reliability of Sybases award-winning database server is available through Web
services to extend e-Business capabilities with complete reliability, performance, and availability.
Todays enterprise is driven by many different software systems, both within and outside the organiza-
tion. The cost of integrating these systems to support the demands of real-time, cross-functional, or
cross-company business processes has soared. Web services are self-contained, modular applications
that can be described, published, located, and invoked over a network, generally, the Internet. As such,
Web services deliver cost-effective, practical solutions for point-to-point integration with external
software systems, regardless of operating system or platform.
By leveraging Web services, Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) provides a standardized, vendor-
neutral method of exchanging information with heterogeneous and geographically distributed
software systems. Sybase ASE supports all of the open Internet standards, such as XML, WSDL, and
SOAP, required by the Web services infrastructure. Sybase ASE enables Web services applications to
access data stored in ASE as an XML structured document, providing enterprises with an efficient,
cost-effective data management platform for e-Business applications.

KEY BENEFITS
Interoperability Reduces
Cost of Integration
ASE Web services drives
down the cost of developing
new business applications
with integration through
interoperability. Using ASE
Web services to connect
disparate systems is far
less expensive than build-
ing or configuring custom
adaptors and translation
software to achieve direct
integration.
Easily Implemented
ASE Web services are
standards-based and easily
implemented, enabling
developers to address
short-term integration
issues quickly, with little
risk. This provides an
opportunity to prove ROI
or integration in tactical
increments, helping to
refine the value of
longer-term visions for
enterprise-wide integration.
ASE WEB SERVI CES PRODUCER
The ASE Web Services Producer provides the ability for applications to access ASE using Web
services from any language, on any platform, without driver installation. ASE Web Services
Producer exposes ASE information to authenticated Web services consumers. The producer
receives and executes stored procedure or SQL requests, returning requested data and its
supporting metadata. For example, an order entry application that needs to update other applica-
tions with up-to-date information can use the Web Services Producer to make the new entries
available through a Web service to many other applications.
Standards-based interoperability allows ASE Web Services Producer to easily share information
with partners. Delivering ASE content in XML-formatted payloads improves internal efcien-
cies and reduces overall integration costs.
Clients send SQL or stored procedure commands as SOAP requests to the producer; results are
returned as SOAP responses. The SOAP handler also generates WSDL les describing avail-
able Web services to clients. The producer methods conform to the SQLXML standard.

ASE WEB SERVI CES CONSUMER
The ASE Web Services Consumer provides the ability for ASE to consume a Web service at the
request of an application. The Web service to be consumed is modeled within ASE and is invoked
through SQL requests or stored procedures. The consumer then passes requests to the target
Web service, updates ASE with the returned data and provides the results to the application. For
example, a CRM database can directly request and receive updated customer and purchase
records available as Web services from other systems.
ASE Web Services Consumer supports SOAP and uses WSDL and HTTP for interoperability
with standards-based Web services. This interoperability allows the ASE Web Services Consumer
to easily extract information from available Web services. For example, ASE could be scheduled
to check for stock prices at market close, or to update a table for telephone area code using public
information at dened intervals, making it much simpler to leverage the availability of Web serv-
ices information across many applications.
An additional benet is that existing SQL-based tools can now access external data sources that
are available through these Web services to ASE.
WEB SERVI CES SUPPORTED FEATURES
Sybase ASE provides the open standards required to support a Web services environment,
including native XML support, WSDL, and SOAP.

congure SSL properties, and to monitor SOAP messages.
CONCLUSION
Sybase Web services is an
affordable, scalable, and
highly effective solution to
the challenges of integrat-
ing multiple systems and
applications across the
enterprise and beyond. By
combining Sybase ASEs
well known strengths in
reliability, performance,
and availability with Web
services, Sybase provides
