Reducing organic and inorganic waste One of the ways that CERES reduces organic waste is through the use of wormie bins. The have a special type of bin that they use which is designed to reduce organic food waste. The worms eat the waste and nutrient rich soil is produced that they use to grow produce. Another way that CERES reduces/reuses organic waste is through biogas. Biogas is achieved through anaerobic digestion and produces methane and fertiliser that can be used in home and to grow plants. Essentially, they turn scraps into valuable resources for living. CERES reduces inorganic waste through alternatively reusing the waste whether it is for fixing things around CERES Park or reusing glass jars in the caf.
Reducing consumption of fossil fuels One of the ways that CERES reduces fossil fuels through the implementation of Biogas through organic waste, which then transforms into methane which is an energy source.
Reducing the use of town water CERES is the recipient the towns water supply through rainwater, stormwater, recycled water, wastewater, groundwater, potable water and waterways. CERES aims to reduce water through understanding that water is a natural resource, having plants that require minimal water consumption, educate and audit water consumption.
Improving biodiversity CERES supports the native plants and animals by inhibiting them within the park. This is exercised within the nursery.
How do the CERES buildings demonstrate: Reducing, reusing recycling waste in the buildings CERES do not use bags, however they have brown paper bags if purchasing vegetables or fruit. They have recycled cane baskets to put your fruit and vegetables in whilst you are browsing. Within the caf, they use recycled glass containers as water jugs and sugar pots. They have the knives and forks stored in pots. The CERES van ray was made out of local products where possible; the materials used are wood and hemp. It was also made out of recycled products such as recycled hardwood timber.
Reducing energy use The vanraay buildings reduce energy use through a thought out process during construction. The buildings have carefully planned windows that allow the light to come through in conjunction with the movement of the sun. The solar design within the vanraay promotes the heat to be sealed in winter and the ventilation promotes less energy used instead of air conditioner.
Reducing the need to rely on town water The vanraay buildings collect water, re-use and use water resourcefully. They have fittings and fixtures that reduce water wastage. There are water management systems in place that helps reduce water consumption.
