Benz in 1886. To some extent, 1672 might seem surprisingly recent for the first car ever
The electric light, one of the everyday conveniences that most affects our lives, was not invented in the
traditional sense in 1879 by Thomas Alva Edison, although he could be said to have created the first
commercially practical incandescent light. He was neither the first nor the only person trying to invent an
incandescent light bulb. In fact, some historians claim there were over 20 inventors of incandescent
lamps prior to Edisons version.
The first airplane was invented by the Wright brothers in 1898 . On December 17, 1903 at Kitty
Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright Flyer became the first powered, heavier than air machine to
achieve controlled, sustained flight with a pilot aboard.
Alexander Graham Bell was the man who invented the first telephone. He began his
experiments in 1866. On March 7, 1876, the patent was issued for the telephone.

Charles Babbage is credited with the first design of a fully programmable computer in 1837.
However, he lacked the funds and ability to stop tweaking the device. The basis for almost all
modern computers was designed by an American team between the 1930s and 40s.

VAN MAHOTSAV
Van Mahotsav is an annual pan-Indian tree planting festival, occupying a week in the month of
July. During this event millions of trees are planted.

It was initiated in 1950 by K. M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food to
create an enthusiasm in the mind of the populace for the conservation of forests and planting of
trees.

The main objectives of the planting of trees during Van Mahotsav are to:

Provide fuel and thus release cow dung for use as manure. Increase production of fruits
and add to the potential food resources of the country. Help creation of shelter-belts around
agricultural fields to increase their productivity. Provide fodder leaves for cattle to relieve
intensity of grazing over reserved forests. Provide shade and ornamental trees for the
landscape.
The Chipko Movement was a movement in India that protested the destruction of forests. It began in
the 1970s, however the original Chipko Movement began over 250 years ago. The leader of the
original Chipko Movement was a lady named Amrita Devi. The Chipko movement or Chipko
Andolan is a movement that practiced the Gandhian methods of satyagraha and non-
violent resistance, through the act of hugging trees to protect them

LARGEST - The world's largest living Christmas tree is an oak in Hilton Park in
Wilmington, North Carolina, estimated to be over 300 years old. It was first decorated in

OLDEST - The oldest known living tree in the world is a conifer that was found in Sweden in 2008.
Researchers discovered that the tree's root system has been growing for a lengthy of 9,950 years.
The long-living tree was found at an altitude of over 762 metres above sea level.
CIRCUMFRENCE - To tell the age of a living tree, measure the circumference about 4-5 ft above the
ground. Find the diameter. Multiply this number by the growth rate of the tree. The range for
common trees is 2.0 (aspen) to 7.0 (dogwood.) The result is the age.
