KVAR Energy Controllers (KVAR ECs) - KVAR ECs are Power Factor (PF) optimization devices designed for electric utility customers to reduce their energy consumption (kWh), lower KVA demand, optimize PF for inductive loads, reduce electric losses and decrease carbon footprint. You and/or your company should consider these KVAR ECs as a most effective energy efcient measure and a wise investment that will preserve our natural resources and foster a sustainable environment. KVAR Cold is an active refrigerant agent that reconditions, restores and maintains efciency in air conditioners, chillers and refrigeration systems, resulting in the reduction of kWh consumption. It is a HVAC/ Refrigeration Restoration and Energy Efciency product that improves the heat transfer in condenser and evaporator coils in air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration systems. KVAR Cold improves compressor operation, reduces vibrations and lowers the sound level (decibels), resulting in an extended life of the compressor and improved performance of the unit. Specically, KVAR Cold is an intermetallic compound composed of natural elements that form a permanent bond to metal surfaces. The KVAR Cold compound is engineered and designed specically for HVAC/Refrigeration applications and goes through a highly sophisticated suspension process to suspend in an appropriate refrigerant oil base. Technology and Expected Savings KVAR EC - The KVAR Corp. is licensed to use the patent on the sizing apparatus and procedures that allow KVAR certied electricians to optimize PF on-site, by tuning the electrical system in real time, from the inductive equipment back through the electric utility meter. The post-sizing specied KVAR ECs are the only certied Power Factor Optimization Devices that can provide real time on-site 100% power factor correction to the unity level, i.e. 1.0 PF. The three proprietary KVAR sizing units used to simplify the process of determining the amount of capacitance that is needed to optimize inductive loads are used for commercial and industrial loads. KVAR ECs reduce kWh consumption by 6% to 10% for residential loads, 6% to 17% for commercial and 6% to 25% for industrial. Executive Summary KVAR Energy Savings, Inc. KVAR Cold is designed as a concentrated metal conditioner and surface modier for air conditioning, refrigeration, chiller and heat pump applications. Where competitive products produce only a surface lm or coating, KVAR Colds proprietary technology utilizes a molecular bonding technology to form an electrochemical bond with the systems metal surfaces. KVAR Cold is introduced into a system by the exact same procedures normally employed to add refrigerant leak detection dye to a refrigerant system. As KVAR Cold integrates through the system, the intermetallic compound is released from the refrigerant oil transport agent at 165 Fahrenheit. KVAR Cold displaces existing oil fouling on the interior metal surfaces and forms a molecular bond to create a protective layer over the metal. Company The KVAR Energy Savings, Inc. (KVAR Corp.), a Daytona Beach, Florida corporation, began manufacturing and distributing these KVAR ECs in 1992. Through sales channels spanning multiple business sectors, KVAR ECs are making a real difference in reducing energy costs in national and international markets. The KVAR ECs are UL, CSA and CE listed, as well as RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substances Directives) certied. KVAR Corp. recently began distributing KVAR Cold after realizing the combined benets of KVAR Cold and KVAR ECs. Recommendation We strongly recommend that the you and/or your company consider the use of KVAR ECs and KVAR Cold as cost effective methods of optimizing PF and reducing energy costs. Benefi ts of KVAR EC The installation of a KVAR Energy Controller (KVAR EC) will provide a combination of benets resulting in a reduction of energy consumption. Typically such reduction equates to a minimum of 6% of existing usage. Numerous testimonials are available to validate these facts. Electric Power has two components: 1. Active Power produces work, measured in kW (1000 Watts) 2. Reactive Power needed to generate the magnetic elds required for operation of inductive electri- cal equipment, but performs no useful work, measured in KVAR (1000 Volt-Amperes Reactive) Total Power is measured in KVA (1000 Volt-Amperes) The ratio of Active Power to Total Power is called Power Factor. The KVAR EC optimizes the Power Factor close to 1.0 (unity) with a custom capacitor bank at or near the inductive electrical equipment. These ca- pacitor banks supply the reactive power needed by the inductive electrical equipment, thereby replacing the reactive power previously supplied by the utility companies. This has a number of benets including: 1. Reduced Power Losses in Distribution Systems Because the reactive current required by the induc- tive equipment is now being provided by the KVAR EC, the current owing throughout the distribution system is signicantly reduced. Losses in the electrical distribution system are proportional to the square of the current owing through the system (I!R) and are therefore even more signicantly reduced. The popular misconception is that these savings are minimal, but this is not the reality. 2. Improved Voltage Regulation Due to Reduced Line Voltage Drop This directly results in more efcient performance of motors meaning less energy turned into heat in the windings of motors which means cooler running motors that last longer and require less maintenance. 3. Reduced Demand Charge It is common for utility companies to apply a charge to compensate for the capital investment they have made to serve a facilitys peak load. Improving power factor close to 1.0 will reduce this peak load and result in further cost savings. 4. Better Utilization of Electrical Machines By increasing the power factor, current is reduced which in turn reduces the total power requirement space on the electrical infrastructure that is generated, thereby reducing maximum demand charges and providing increased space on the infrastructure. Benets of KVAR EC KVAR Energy Savings, Inc. Benefi ts of KVAR Col d KVAR Cold prolongs the life of mechanical equipment because it contains an element that increases the lubricity of refrigerant oil thereby signicantly reducing mechanical coefcient of friction between the parts resulting in reduced wear, tear and maintenance, on the equipment. Independent lubricity testing reports that untreated refrigerant oil samples failed under pressures of 300 psi. Samples tested with KVAR Cold did not fail even at the tests maximum pressure of 4,500 psi. Unlike so many of the products available, KVAR Cold does not operate as an Oil Additive treatment and does blend into the existing refrigerant. KVAR Cold products are not intended to treat or modify the equipments primary lubricant. KVAR Cold products utilize the primary lubricant only as a carrier medium to distribute the KVAR Cold treatment throughout the equipment to treat the metal surfaces and return debris back to the ltration system. KVAR Cold products form a microscopic, protective lubricant layer that physically becomes part of the equipments metal surface providing continuous lubrication protection. This electrochemically bonded lubri- cant layer can provide protection even during a catastrophic loss of primary lubricant. KVAR Cold products have been tested to The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air- Condition Engineers (ASHRAE) test for Miscibility, Metal Compatibility and Flock test. KVAR Cold has also been tested to ANSI/ASHRAE 37-1988 and American Refrigeration Institute, ARI Standard 340/360-2000 without issues. KVAR Cold is produced in four types of refrigerant oils to be compatible with the base oil that is currently used in the refrigeration and air-condition systems. KVAR Cold is the only safe product, to our knowledge, for use in ammonia-charged gas refrigeration systems. Benets of KVAR Cold KVAR Energy Savings, Inc. Teami ng KVAR EC and KVAR Col d The synergistic benets of installing both the KVAR Energy Controller (KVAR EC) in conjunction with KVAR Cold provides multiplicative advantages resulting in an even greater reduction of energy consumption than either device installed on its own. Through the use of both of these proactive advanced engineering technologies, the result is even greater efciency in the performance of motors, less energy turned into heat and windage losses, and cooler running and longer-lasting motors that require less maintenance. The impact of KVAR Cold on equipment performance is increased heat transfer capability (thermal con- ductivity), reduction in the boiling point of the base refrigerant, an increase in the overall efciency of the heat exchange system, a reduction in compressor run time (by reaching its operating set point quicker), and re- duction of electrical energy kWh consumption. The patented and UL listed KVAR EC supplies reactive power to inductive electrical equipment, thereby reducing "kilo-Watt-per-hour" energy consumption between 6% to 25%, with a return on investment (ROI) period of typically between less than one year to 24 months. Combining these two technologies concurrently has conclusively been shown to lead to signicantly de- creased equipment operation and maintenance costs, considerably lowered energy bills, reduced equipment maintenance expenses, minimized equipment downtime, and the avoidance of expensive equipment re- placement costs due to decreased operating life.
