Moorestown Day approaches.

KYLE CARNEY/The Sun
Jared Gold of Moorestown rips a double in the fourth inning of the South Jersey Group 3 semifinal game against Highland on May 27.
The Quakers plated three in the bottom half of the fourth, which proved critical in their 4-2 victory. On Friday, May 30, the Quakers
were upset 2-0 by No. 11 seed Mainland Regional High School in the South Jersey Group III championship. Scott Zimmer pitched nine
innings for Moorestown, allowing two unearned runs while striking out 21 Mainland batters.

Gymnast
dominates
at state
competition
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
For most aspiring gymnasts,
the goal is the Olympics. It is a
sport where athletes begin almost
as soon as they can walk and the
training is vigorous, which is
why most gymnasts stick with it
for life.
Isabel Chu is not most gym-
nasts, though.
In her latest competition, Is-
abel dominated the competition
at the New Jersey State Champi-
onships at the Wildwood Conven-
tion Center. The competition
brought more than 600 athletes
from around the state to compete
for the title. The gymnasts were
divided into groups based on
their age and skill level. Isabel
competed in the Level 7, 11-year
old bracket.
I didnt think I was going to
win, Isabel said. There were a
lot of really good gymnasts in the
competition, and I didnt know if
I could do it.
Isabel did win and she did it
without a shadow of a doubt. The
competition included four events,
please see GYMNAST, page 15

I
ts no secret that health insurance
is expensive. Thanks to Oba-
macare, health insurance is more
obtainable for Americans, but for most
of us, the cost of health insurance
especially through employer-spon-
sored plans continues to rise.
Theres nothing that we, or our em-
ployers, can do about it, unfortunately.
Now that we are required to have
health insurance, we cant just say,
screw it, Ill take a chance and have
no insurance. We are required to pay
up...and up and up and up.
So what can we do? What is in our
control? The obvious answer: Our
health.
The healthier we are, the less likely
we will need to use our health insur-
ance. And the less we need to use our
health insurance, the more likely the
cost of our health insurance will go
down in the future.
Take a look at your health insur-
ance plan, and at others that those
around you have. Most likely, there are
incentives for living a healthy lifestyle.
Join a gym, go three times a week, and
you get a discount on said gym mem-
bership. Why? Because the healthier
we are, the less it costs to insure us.
Getting healthier starts at home,
with the food we eat. And the food that
is available for us to eat is getting bet-
ter all around us.
A great place to start for healthier
options is a local farmers market.
Theyre popping up everywhere, if
you havent noticed.
According to JerseyFresh.com,
there are 11 registered farmers mar-
kets in Camden County and six in
Burlington County that run every
weekend.
Thats in addition to the countless
farm stands and farmers market spe-
cial events that take place from spring
through fall.
Never been to a farmers market? Its
worth the trip. Not only can you buy
fresh, local produce that is often
cheaper than the supermarkets, you
can also get great ideas and lessons on
how to use the products you buy.
In addition to learning more about a
healthy lifestyle, and purchasing
goods that can help you do so, visiting
a local farmers market is also a nice
change-of-pace for the summer.
So get up, go out and support local
farmers and stores by visiting your
local farmers market. It will be well
worth the trip, now and in the future.
Want cheaper health insurance?
Get healthy and start at a local farmers market

Were award winners!
I like to think that we do some pretty
good work here at The Sun. Sure, I may be
a little biased, seeing as how Ive worked
here for more than nine years, and have
played a part in how we look today as a
company.
I cant help but be proud of the work we
produce every week, covering all of our
towns on an in-depth basis.
Im also particularly proud of how far
weve come over these past nine years, and
how weve continued to transition in the
ever-changing world of the news media.
But last week, I was delivered news that
made me perhaps the proudest Ive been
since I first joined this company in March
2005.
Officially, we can consider ourselves an
award-winning news company. Officially,
two of our news department employees
can call themselves award-winning jour-
nalists.
Our very own Katie Morgan, the associ-
ate editor for The Princeton Sun, and Mary
Serkalow, the managing editor for all The
Suns, were named winners of the 2014 New
Jersey Society of Professional Journalists
Excellence in Journalism awards for
work done in 2013.
Katie won second place in the weekly
newspaper category for the Wilson Barto
Rookie of the Year, and Mary won third
place in the weekly newspaper category for
Page One Design.
They, along with our company, will be
recognized at a banquet at the end of the
month.
Please join me in congratulating both
Katie and Mary, and the rest of our news
department, for the recognition. It was our
hard work and dedication to our readers
that helped us win these awards.
Heres to more awards, and even better
news coverage, in the future!

Major improvements
and upgrades slotted
for county parks
Burlington County Freeholder
Director Bruce Garganio an-
nounced that the Board of Cho-
sen Freeholders has approved an
ambitious 2014 recreation, parks
and open space plan that includes
major improvements to three
county parks, preservation of a
potential two dozen more farms
and another round of $5 million
in grants to towns to build and
upgrade local parks, trails and
ball fields.
In addition to improvements
to the trails, parking, picnicking
and other facilities at Willingboro
Lakes, the Anderson Farm in Del-
ran and Crystal Lake Park in
Mansfield, the county will also re-
main an active partner with local
and state government and a
friends group, in the operation of
Rancocas Nature Center, said di-
rector Garganio.
These, and other projects de-
tailed in the 2014 plan, will be fi-
nanced by the countys trust fund
for recreation, open space, farm-
land and historic preservation.
The good news, said Mary
Pat Robbie, director of Resource
Conservation, is that the trust
fund began the year with a bal-
ance of $41.7 million and that the
dedicated tax rate can continue
another year at the rate of 1.5
cents per $100 of equalized valua-
tion.
Last year the freeholders re-
solved that the county would not
collect taxes and stockpile rev-
enue that we didnt need, said
Garganio. I think it fair to say
we are in the same position this
year. We can continue to hold the
line on taxes and still move for-
ward with park and recreation
initiatives without asking taxpay-
ers for more.
The resolution to hold the dedi-
cated open space rate at 1.5 cents
per $100 of equalized valuation,

Improvements also planned
for Historic Smithville Park
as opposed to the maximum rate
of 4 cents, was approved and is
expected to raise $6.5 million.
The reality is that the trust
fund has more than held its own,
at the current rate, Garganio
said. We are financially posi-
tioned to continue with all of our
land preservation, parks and
recreation plans, not to mention
historic preservation projects,
without hitting taxpayers for
more.
Our award-winning recre-
ational grant program to the
towns will continue for the fifth
year in a row, Garganio added.
In her presentation, Robbie
also included planned improve-
ments to the building that will
house the Underground Railroad
Museum at Historic Smithville
Park, as well as much-needed im-
provements to the Burlington
County Lyceum of History and
Natural Sciences in Mount Holly
and the popular Community
Agriculture Center in
Moorestown.
On balance, 2013 was a stellar
year for the countys parks, said
Robbie. With over 1 million visi-
tors logged and a number of
worthwhile projects underway.

Executive Director Theresa
Tobey and Board President David
Herron announced the winners of
two $1,000 CONTACT scholar-
ships: Sara Ostrowski of Cin-
naminson, a TeenLine volunteer,

including the balance beam, un-
even bars, vault and the floor. Is-
abel scored a 9.750 in the vault, a
9.725 in the uneven bars, a 9.775 in
the balance beam and a 9.725 in
the floor. Her combined score of
38.975 set a new state record for
Level 7. Her score also tied the all
around score at any New Jersey
State Championship Meet for all
levels.
It really feels great, Isabel
said. Im always nervous until I
start, and then I just do it.
Isabel competes for Will-Moor
Gymnastics and has been doing
gymnastics since age 4, when her
mother Christina signed her up.
As a kid, Isabel was always
playing gymnastics. When other
little girls were playing doctor or
school or house, Isabel was doing
gymnastics, Christina said. So,
we decided to sign her up and
here we are now.
Isabel has dedicated herself to
gymnastics and the results show.
Her score at the New Jersey State
Championships has set a prece-
dent for other gymnasts in the
state and at Will-Moor Gymnas-
tics. Her all around score is the
highest by any Will-Moor gym-
nast of any level to date.
With accolades such as these
and records being set, it would
seem like the sky is the limit. Is-
abel, however, has different plans.
I will continue to do gymnas-
tics for a few more years, proba-
bly until high school, Isabel said.
I dont want to go to the
Olympics, though. There is just
too much training involved.
Isabels mom shares this senti-
ment and will not force her to do
anything she doesnt want to do.
We will just take it year by
year, she said. We dont push
her to do it, and when she decides
she doesnt want to do it anymore,
that will be it.
Even when or if Isabel decides
to hang it up, her records will al-
ways be there.

154 East Main Street, Moorestown
Friends of mine had been looking for a home in Moorestown for nearly a year w/ very specific criteria. A home
walking distance fromdowntown they could customize to make their own. I knew there was a possibility the owner
might want to sell this home, so I made contact to let them know I had a potential buyer. When we through we
could see the home could suit their needs. They had the vision to see what this home had the potential to be & fell
in love with it. We began negotiations while Canton Custom Homes began pricing renovations. Everything was
worked out, and now we get to save a beautiful home on Moorestowns Main St by restoring this gemto its original
glory w/ all the modern bells & whistles.

By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
Its never too late to get in-
volved. Mariah Alexander found
that out on her first day of col-
lege at Oregon State.
I joined the SAE Collegiate
Design Series team as soon as I
got to campus, Alexander said.
I literally knew no one at school,
and I thought it would be a great
way to meet new people.
The SAE Collegiate Design
challenges students to design and
fabricate a Formula SAE vehicle.
The teams work on the vehicle
over the course of the school
year, before venturing to Michi-
gan International Speedway in
Brooklyn, Mich., to compete.
Being at the competition was
surreal, Alexander said. Michi-
gan International Speedway is
the fastest track in NASCAR and
to actually be on that track was
amazing.
The competition featured 120
teams from colleges and universi-
ties all over the world. Teams
came from as far as Germany
and Brazil to compete, but in the
end, Alexander found herself on
the winning side, as Oregon State
took home the trophy.
I think that our team definite-
ly earned it, she said. We
worked hard to get where we are,
and want to be the best at what
were doing. I am proud to be a
part of the team.
As an electrical engineering
major, Alexander understands
this experience will have a pro-
found impact on her career.
Being a freshman gave her the
chance to immerse herself in the
working of the vehicle. The com-
petition counts toward the senior
project for students, so freshmen
generally do more learning than
working.
These may seem like small
tasks, but they are leading to big-
ger tasks for me, she said. Like
for next years car I will be mak-
ing, or maybe help making, but
hope to be making, the wiring
harness.
While it may have been a
learning experience, Alexander
is quick to admit that she enjoys
just being around cars. Her inspi-
ration to get involved in this par-
ticular team wasnt only about
making friends.
I have always been interested
in cars and thought that actually
learning what goes into making a
moving vehicle would be awe-
some, Alexander said. I grew
up loving vehicles. Both my par-
ents ride motorcycles, and we at-
tended car shows all of the time. I
didn't hear of these sorts of com-
petitions until my senior year of
high school, but of course it was-
n't too late.
Alexander is planning to con-
tinue with the team and plans to
compete in next years event as
well. And while the competition
was fun, Alexander sees the long-
term effect winning this competi-
tion can have.
This competition is definitely
helpful for college seniors in en-
gineering looking for a job. I plan
on being around to see if it can
happen for me when Im a sen-
ior, she said.

The Sun
You would think after 37 years
that Moorestown Day wouldnt
change all that much. But a record
number of vendors, beautiful
weather, more food choices and
even a camel went a long way in
making last years event the
biggest yet.
This years goal? To top that.
The 38th edition of
Moorestown Day, hosted by the
Moorestown Business Associa-
tion, will take place Saturday,
June 7 on Main Street from 9 a.m.
until 3 p.m.
Its a special once-a-year day
that brings everyone together to
celebrate our very special town,
Moorestown Day chairperson
Helen Davies-Miramontes said in
a statement.
The annual celebration is a
long-standing Moorestown tradi-
tion that features local merchants
with sidewalk sales, food from
neighborhood establishments and
entertainment from local theater
company performances.
We appreciate the generous
support of these organizations,
because these sponsorships are
vital to the success of all of our
MBA town-wide events, especially
Moorestown Day, said MBA pres-
ident Mark Morgan.
In addition to a food court, fam-
ilies can enjoy entertainment in
the kids zone that will give chil-
dren the opportunity to ride a
camel, pet other animals or jump
to their hearts content in one of a
few different bounce houses.
For Gina Zegel, a volunteer for
the event, Moorestown Day repre-
sents a tradition for her and her
family.
The attachment I have with
the event was going each year
with my children, seeing neigh-
bors, having lunch downtown.
Watching the run take off is very
exciting, Zegel said.
The run Zegel is referring to is
the Scott Coffee Moorestown Ro-
tary 8K, named for the founder of
the race who passed away in the
summer of 2006.
Coffee founded and chaired the
Moorestown Rotary Club run in
1984. What was originally a small
fundraiser with participation of
around 125 runners has become a
major fundraiser for the Rotary
with a field of nearly 1,000 run-
ners.
When Coffee passed away
shortly after the 2006 race, it not
only left a huge void, but also an
active, dedicated and generous
volunteer in the community was
tragically silenced. In his honor,
the Moorestown Rotary changed
the name of the race and founded
the Scott Coffee Education En-
dowment, which provides scholar-
ships for high school students.
The race is presented by the
club in cooperation with the
Township of Moorestown and the
Moorestown Community House.
The 8K starts and finishes at the
Community House on Main
Street. The traffic-free USATF cer-
tified course passes through the
historic, tree-lined streets of the
township. There are splits every
mile and two water stops.
Once again, to help residents
get to the festivities and avoid
looking for a parking space, Lin-
coln Technical Institute is provid-
ing free parking and a free shuttle
service throughout the day. Follow
the signs to park in its large lot at
308 W. Route 38 and look for the
LTI buses. The shuttle will drop
patrons off at High Street, one
block from Main Street and the
center of the action.
