Assignment/Activity Title 4

th
Quarter Interdisciplinary YearFreshman
SkillResearch Portfolio CategoryCritical Reasoning

For my 4
th
Quarter Interdisciplinary Project, I researched and wrote about the Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee, SNCC. SNCC advocated civil rights in the 1960s. During the late 60s, towards the end of its tenure as an
organization, SNCC adopted the Black Power philosophy of accepting violence as a means of defending civil rights. For
my project, I researched the groups history and wrote a 3-page essay about it and how they turned to Black Power. After
submitting my essay, I read a summary of my work aloud to my CAP peers in the form of a newscast. My particular role
in this newscast also had me act as news anchor.

The entire Interdisciplinary production was based around Woodstock. To match the theme, each participant was
required to dress up as a hippie, like the actual crowd at Woodstock. I, personally, was not required to do much other than
read lines from a script at the Woodstock recreation, but it was, in general, a lively environment that had the feel of its
real-life inspiration. The assignment relates to the category of critical reasoning in that I analyze a controversial topic from
a previous decade and I also examine the beliefs of others as well as my own on the issue.

The essay I wrote was a good indicator of my growth as a CAP student. Each student was required to write a 2-3
page essay that included citations from both primary and secondary sources. Searching for primary sources was somewhat
difficult because not many electric copies of them could be found on the internet. The majority of the primary sources
used in my essay were interviews with former members of SNCC. This essay made me go very in-depth with my research
and it was shown in my essay. Before becoming a CAP student, I wrote essays that were not very credible because I did
not take the time to do in-depth research and incorporate proper in-text citations.

Being in CAP has allowed my writing ability to improve dramatically; whereas before, in middle school, I would
simply rely on the arguments I brought up and paraphrase evidence rather than properly quote and cite it. CAP has taught
me that this makes for illegitimate arguments where no point can be proven as correct due to a lack of proper evidence.
This essay reflected my growth, as I raised good arguments backed by solid evidence and using the proper in-text
