FEEDBACK: CHEF ON WHEELS

During the month of April, in a span of one week (14
th
-23
rd
April 2014), the Student Council received more
than 200 complaints with regard to the mess related issues. There is widespread discontent among all
students primarily because of the following issues:
1. Sudden restriction on the quantity of Cold milk during high tea
2. Late implementation of Mess Menu
3. The Mess rates displayed at the notice boards included an extra amount of Rs 6 without any kind of
prior information.
4. General Mess Specific Complaints
(a) Alternatives to egg for vegetarians were conveyed during the Mess Committee meeting on 10
th

April. There has been no implementation in this regard.
(b) Spoilt milk served at the Food Court on 6
th

MANIPAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
STUDENT COUNCIL
FEEDBACK: CHEF ON WHEELS

FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS

Please forward it to as many MITians as you can.
As Chef on Wheels has been unable to comply with the recommendations of mess committee, we're going to
boycott mess food to cut down the monopoly of Chef on Wheels which is due to lack of competition in
campus for 4 days. Please take a leave from whatever mess you're in during 24th-27th April (Thursday to
Sunday-both days inclusive). There are plenty of places to eat in and around the campus.
We seek your support and cooperation to make this movement successful. Together, we did bring a change.
We can do it this time too.

increasing the price by 5 bucks and then limiting the cold milk(only reason for my hi tea) again to 1 glass...
this is a very bad move by authorities

Cold Milk and Bournvita was the one good thing Foodcourt had for Hi- Tea.
Don't take it away from us.

I think the student council should be renamed as CHEF ON WHEELS COUNCIL
1. 157 ml of milk per person is not too much for any mess . Its not even 1 glass. I don't know how student
council couldn't apprehend that.
2. The price of milk quoted by chef on wheels is simply ridiculous. Its diluted too much. For wholesale rates
of 250 l milk i think either people are robbing chef on wheels or chef on wheels is robbing us.
3 The same thing goes for bournvita too.
4 I don't see anyone wasting there precious cold milk for which they have to wait in long queues.
5 In breakfast people don't have time to drink hot milk and in evening its already too hot who will drink such
scaldingly hot milk.
6 You are also talking about cooling charges for milk but I'd like to point out the milk is never boiled and its
bought cold and served cold. Also since chef on wheels quotes the MRP of milk so they cant talk about
cooling charges. If i go to a shop refrigerated and non refrigerated milk are sold at same price.
7.In annapoorna mess we are given only "1 GLASS" that also on showing the coupon .I don't understand
how non members are able to use the facility then.
8 "Chef on Wheels has recommended immediate withdrawal of the facility" I recommend immediate
withdrawal of chef on wheels from MIT

Chef On Wheels serves food that tastes bad on purpose. They don't want us to eat that food. They want us
to eat on top so that they get extra money, which is all they care about.
Did we make a big fuss when they increased the rates from Rs.80 2 years back to Rs.140 right now? So why
would they make a big deal out of the milk consumption?
And I'm pretty sure, there must've been a decrease in the consumption of tea and coffee, which Chef On
Wheels will never talk about. They're saving money there.

Chef on Wheels is testing the patience of the students.Once, majority of them lose their calm, they would be
kicked out of this college. They must be given a lesson. With their eventual control over college messes in the
last two years, they have completely turned a blind eye towards the quality as well as the quantity of the
food. It's time for them to mend their ways, else there would be an uproar to mend them.

Point is chef on wheels has been swindling students ever since it started. pathetic food so that people buy
from top, diluted milk, reducing number of dishes drastically, diluting ketchup, unexplained dues, students
being charge regardless of whether they swipe or not. The one time that students scam chef on wheels and
they create a hullabaloo. Simply unacceptable.

It was mentioned "unlimited" and now you say 200 ml.. It should have been cleared out that time itself. No
"REVAMPING" of veg menu took place except the frequency of paneer being increased. Atleast justify this
or the increase in price or please set it right as it was before. I am happy with that.. I am a member from
aditya mess... old price was 128.. now it is 139 as told by my mess committe member.. This ain't happening
good.

1) milk is definitely diluted.
2) Bournvita should be standardized. I've seen people take 1:1 ratio of bournvita and milk... and thats simply
ridiculous. A mess staff can be made to put in a spoon of bourvita in each glass. It'll greatly bring out
bournvita consumption.

the milk used is most probably nandini which is Rs.30/ litre in north karnataka districts but the point being
that it is heavily diluted when served so why the price hike and why are services being recalled ? Also, the
idea of keeping a person at the milk station to serve bournvita will serve the purpose of bringing down
consumption..

The reason of low consumption of hot milk, tea and coffee is that its scalding hot. One can easily burn his
hand with that milk. In the morning people don't have enough time for it to cool. And in the evening its so
hot, hardly anyone would want to have anything thats hot. Cold milk was extremely refreshing. But sadly
Chef on Wheels cant take the hit on their profits. And secondly There are close to 1400 members in
Annapoorna. That means a per member consumption of around 157 ml(if total milk consumed was 220L).
Then why is this such a big deal as compared to a quantity of 110ml. And please Student Council of MIT
Open Group. and Annapoorna Mess (Manipal University) everyone wants a common thing,EVERY
SINGLE MEMBER. Please look into it.

Talking about the quality of food, I'm sorry to say that the snacks we get during high tea are way
unhealthier to eat than any other street food. They banned Cola where High Tea snacks like those served by
CoW should be banned. Everything seems so adultrated. When they put in all the necessary ingredients in
particular dish, they cook it badly.

The reason of consumption of milk being so low when we didn't get chilled milk is, 'nobody wanted to
eat/drink the kind of food they served at High Tea'. They should have speculated the increase in milk
consumption. If CoW can't meet the need of students even after being here in Manipal for years, I don't
know where the world is heading to.

I know people will say that the mess facility we're getting is better than what most of the colleges are
getting. But considering the price we're paying for the food, it's just average. About the costs, the
ones Student Council of MIT Open Group. mentioned in the post are the Maximum Retail Prices. The
amount of Bournvita that people at all messes of the University consume in a month should be equal to the
the Bournvita that an ordinary wholesaler supplies in the same period of time. Can't we order a truck full of
Bournvita at once considering the fact in mind that one of the manufacturing facilities of Cadbury is in
Bangalore?

They charge me for mess with hostel fee even if I don't want to eat the food they serve. I'm sure that my
parents won't mind a minor change in the cost of food that I eat at FC, but they would mind me eating
substandard food they serve in here.
OMG! when I passed out in 2010 mess charges were Rs 52-60

"hike in price due to increased high tea facilities" Aren't those slightly fancy terms to describe 30-40ml of
Milk and a spoonful of malt?

Long back I took the only solution I could find to this pathetic money leeching company... To leave hostel
mess altogether.

My suggestion - enough of all this useless compromising, it's high time to revolt. Everybody fill up all the
available mess complaint forms, then ask for more, and more. And if that doesn't work, then abandon food
court for a day. It would be interesting to see what they do with all their "undiluted Rs32/litre" milk and the
other tasteless (+costly) food...

They talk about hygiene, I got a big dead fly in my paneer at the inauguration meal of FC in 2009. I had a
bad feeling about the place then itself...

I was loving the chilled milk which was served and now i am feeling so bad about its revocation..

And what happened to pizza slice and soup? I dont see it at all...

I dont know, but when i was in 1st year, the cost of annapoorna was 20,000 lesser than the current cost and
still we received excellent food along with fruit juices, shakes, oreo, etc.. So, i highly doubt them saying
now that it is not economical for them..

If the old annapoorna admin is able to do it with 20,000 Rs. less, why is the chef on wheels not able to do
the same?

Now, since the milk is limited again.Price should be reverted back to the old one

i request as many people to write to the chief warden regarding their complaints regarding chef on
wheels...
the chief warden has stated that for any complaint he needs plenty of emails so he can use as proof &
overwhelming support against either ion internet or chief on wheels food services

Forget about the milkshakes, they are refusing to serve the chilled milk too. Next will be curd being off the
menu cuz it's a milk product and chilled.
In four years, the price has increased to four times that it was back in 2009, it seems..

Their intent is clear: maximize profit. The idea of limiting chilled milk when they're giving unlimited
scalding-hot milk is utterly retarded otherwise. The less we eat, the more happy they are.

And has anyone questioned them that now how much are they saving due to less consumption of tea and
coffee... Both these counters remain almost empty so I am sure they are saving there... brooke bond ka ek
kilo ka packet bhi 120/- ka aata hai... kuchh to bach rha hoga.. and coffee is pretty expensive i guess..
PLEASE CLARIFY

Now that only 1 glass of cold milk is being served, can we know the details of consumption as were
conveyed by Chef on Wheels when it was unlimited because now that it is limited why not extend the same
to breakfast as well, 1 glass in hi-tea and 1 in breakfast.

Sunday morning scene
9:25 am - Poha (Yellow Rice) is over. They dont refill after that
9:20 am - the mad crowd-snatching of Masala Dosas start
9:25 am - the AC is turned off. So is the case at 9:25 pm
Without notice, CoW stopped serving Puris every Saturday morning. They serve Puris on alternate
Saturdays with barren Parathas on the other Saturdays.
Also, is it that difficult to estimate the amount of Dosas that need to be prepared for Sunday mornings?
Credit to them that they had done it and things were proper 2 weeks ago, but things are back to worse

Masala Dosa, or a CoW version of Aloo stuffed inside Sada Dosa is served in FC on Sunday mornings.
Also, people might say going early is a solution. It isn't.
Poha is served only after 8:30am on Sunday mornings. If you go before 8:30, the in-charge will make you
wait until the clock strikes 8:30 on his watch. So you have to stand like a cow in front of a closed container
of food you pay to eat.
In effect, there are separate meal options for people who get up early and late on Sundays. What tom-foolery
is this?!

the moment they said they were going provide only 1 glass of chilled milk... you should have tried to
7

reduce cost by atleast 2 rs. Given the proper arguments, it would have been easy enough.
the simplest argument would be : providing unlimited chilled milk takes into consideration >= 1 glass for
which the charge (along with bournvita) is 4.95
since the upper limit is now fixed, the corresponding cost of service should therefore reduce.
I've been paying 5 rs extra everyday for no absolute reason now.

Also, The milk has become more diluted than ever.
