Unit: Cell Structure and Function

Science 10
Day 2: Cell Structure and Function
Unit Description
See Day 1
Lesson Overview
Title: Cell Structure Analogies. Day 3 5
Author: Karen Jones
Subject: Science 10
Grade Level: 8 10
Reference:
BC Science 10 Section 1.2 Cells
Lesson Description
Students in pairs will use the Internet or their textbook
to investigate the organelles of plants or animal cells.
They will choose a project in which to document their
research from a choice of:
Five Project Options
1). Cell Analogies Book (in pairs or individually)
2). 3D Cell Model (in pairs or individually)
3). The Organelle Rap (groups 2-4)
4). Visiting the Cell Travel Brochure (individually)
5). Cell Song Video (groups of 2-4)

Achievement Indicators
Students who have fully met the prescribed learning
outcome are able to:
Summarize cell theory (e.g., recognize that all
living things are composed of cells, and all cells
come from pre-existing cells)
Accurately list similarities and differences between
cell types (plant and animal)
Describe the structure and function of cell
organelles (e.g., cell membrane, nucleus,
cytoplasm, mitochondrion, cell wall, chloroplast,
vacuole, ribosome)
Methods
1. Online or Paper-based Quiz:
Present quiz on overhead and have students answer
on paper, 1 question at a time
OR
Have students go to Socrative.com Student:
o Enter Room# 266853
o Take quiz
o Submit

2. Introduction to the Cell Theory:

Accomodations For Diversity
Provide an electronic version of BC Science 10 installed on Rebeccas laptop that can be accessed with Mac
OS X VoiceOver feature.
Provide a Word template for note taking (cell structure) installed on Rebeccas laptop.
Provide a quiz in electronic format compatible with VoiceOver on iPad that can be read aloud and
completed online to eliminate need to write, Socrative.com
Train Rebecca how to use Voice Dream Reader on iPad and on VoiceOver on Mac laptop to read text in
browser.
