MSc in Business Informatics

This programme is jointly conceived and delivered
by The Business School and The School of Informatics.
The new MSc in Business informatics will provide
students with a critical and practical appreciation
of how new information technologies (IT) can be used
in organisation to exploit information resources in order
to create business value, and with the technical skills
to develop and implement the information solutions
required to deliver this value in organisations.
In recent years, new information technologies have
become important enablers of new kinds of products
and services, and new forms of business models.
Businesses are nding radical new ways to work together,
interact with their customers, and organise their complex
supply chains and production networks. At the core
of this transformation lies the ability of organisation
to manage increasing amounts of data. The programme
targets this growing market for data analytics.
It aims to ll in the gap between the knowledge
of the technical IT data analytics tools and techniques
that are provided by existing data analytics computing
programmes, and the understanding of the business
role of IT and information resources in organisation.
Graduates would be qualied for a range of business
and IT roles such as information advisor, knowledge

The aim of the MSc in Banking and Risk is to give
you the knowledge, understanding and key skills
that will enable you to be an effective manager
in nancial institutions, especially banks, in any
country in the world. Recent events demonstrate
that the successful management of banks is
of crucial importance to every economy.
Banking is an industry rather than an academic
discipline and the study of the management of banks
is multidisciplinary. The approach of this programme
is to consider the structural, nancial and risk and asset
management functions of banks.
The programme also covers the different types of risks
banks face and how to measure them. Students who

in business looking at roles such as Risk Management

MSc in Financial Management

Financial Management is one of the key disciplines
necessary for the successful management of business
corporations and other organisations. Studying
the theories underlying Financial Management
practices allows you to understand and explain
the nancial behaviours of organisations.
The MSc in Financial Management is a comprehensive
study of key areas in accounting and corporate nance.
It is designed for graduates interested in a career in the
nance function of a company, in business analysis
or in management consultancy practice. The MSc takes
a broad internal management perspective rather than
a narrow external or nancial market based perspective.
Graduates of the MSc in Financial Management can
work in two main areas of an organisation. Within
accounting, nancial management sits in management
accounting the internal facing function which services
the information needs of the organisations management.
Another option is a role in the corporate nance function
which is concerned with managing the nances of the
organisation, in cash management, asset allocation,
capital structuring and nancial risk management.

This MSc is a comprehensive and intensive
investigation into key areas in accounting and
nance. Designed for those with a quantitative
background, it is both academically rigorous
and closely in line with professional practice. It is
especially useful for those graduates with work
experience in accounting looking to gain essential
practical skills in nance and, vice versa.
There are regular guest speakers who present on
real, current practice and the School maintains good
relationships with a number of accounting and nance

Few business schools offer an MSc with such a strong
investment component. This programme will give
a global perspective on investment markets and
asset classes, provide practical knowledge on the
processes and mechanics underlying investment,
and build on your existing numerical skills so that
you are able to understand and practice investment-
related mathematics. It will introduce you to
relevant academic research, especially empirical
evidence on investment-related questions.

The University of Edinburgh Business School offers
a comprehensive MSc in Marketing and Business Analysis
offering a more quantitative application of marketing
than the MSc in Marketing. This course considers the
applications of management science in marketing and
provides students with the theoretical foundations of
marketing along with an added appreciation of the skills

The MSc will appeal to graduates with a rst
degree in business, economics, environmental
science or a related discipline in the social or
physical sciences. Typically students will have work

Graduates from the MSc in Carbon Finance will
typically pursue a career in carbon trading, carbon
consulting, SRI investment or asset management,
carbon entrepreneurship, climate change policy,
or carbon accounting. The programme can also be
good preparation for further research at PhD level.

By its very nature, a research degree is an individual pursuit. As such research students will be
expected to design and develop their own research strategies, pursue original lines of thought and
present novel research ndings. In this way, every PhD candidate will create a singular piece of
research that will make a signicant contribution to their own personal and career development.
The PhD can be studied Part-time over a six year period.
MSc in Human Resource Management

The aim of the MSc in Human Resource
Management (HRM) is to give you the knowledge,
understanding and key skills that are required by
todays HR professionals and to enable you to
effectively contribute to dynamic organisations.
Managing people an organisations most valuable
and often most costly resource has for a long time been
a key business challenge. Changing economic, nancial,
demographic, and political landscapes mean that the
constitution of effective human resource management
and how it may best be practiced is constantly evolving.
Recent developments indicate clearly that the portfolio
of HRM responsibilities within organisations is growing
with the need for employee engagement with broader
policies such as corporate social responsibility or
work-life balance.
The programme has been designed to provide
a combination of courses that will enable the
professional development of future HR managers.
