limited interest.Bids from most larger

for June delivery while bids for exporters and smaller mills could be seen around $15.25-$15.50 per cwt (about
$336-$342 per ton) for the same delivery period; however, no trades were reported.

In the meantime, today the USDA reported that cumulative net export sales for the week ending on May
29th totaled 36,200 tons, which was considerably higher than last week and 17% higher than the prior 4-week

to unknown destinations, 4,800 tons to Haiti, 1,100 tons to Saudi Arabia, and 1,000 tons to Canada while
decreases of 1,500 tons were reported for El Salvador. Nets sales of 7,000 tons for 2014/2015 were reported for

Punjab India Farmers Can Transplant Non-basmati Rice From June 10
Jun 05, 2014

After much delay, the government of Punjab, a rice-rich state in northern India, has finally directed the
agriculture department to allow farmers to sow non-basmati variety of paddy from June 10. Punjab is among the
top rice producing states of India. The state governments in India are responsible for providing water for the
farms if there are no monsoons and provide for electricity for the farm pumps.

The states decisions on such matters do have a telling on rice production, its time of harvest and other such
factors. The state government had earlier decided to allow transplant of paddy from June 15, but could not issue
a notification as it was bound by the Model Code of Conduct which was in existence till May 20 as the country
went to polls. But after the farmers of state conveyed to the government the problems the rice crop would face
because of late sowing, the government agreed to the sowing of non-basmati seed from Tuesday.
Rice transplanting involves planting the seed in one place and transplanting the seedlings after they have grown

Holy Month, Unholy Mess in Saudi Arabia with Rise in Rice Price
Jun 05, 2014
Even before the holy month of Ramadan has begun (June 28 July 27 this year), the price of rice saw a 4.5
percent spike per kg in the last two weeks in Saudi Arabia. The upcoming festive season - when people use
more rice to make delicacies before and after the daily fast - coupled with a decrease in rice from rice exporting
countries are the reasons, said local traders. In September 2013, India accounted for 63 percent of basmati rice
imports to Saudi Arabia.

India has currently reduced its imports to the country owing to demand for rice locally in the sub-continent.
Indias market share in Saudi Arabia declined to around 69.2% in 2013, compared to 70.3% in 2012.The coastal
Middle-east country has also witnessed a shortage of basmati rice and the price has shot up by 40 percent and
expected to rise further in the next few weeks. A 10 kg bag of kernel basmati that cost SR55 ($14.6631) now
costs SR80 ($21.3).Shortage of kernel basmati from Pakistan and India has kick-started the price hike fight,
local sources maintain. Locals claim that traders are looking to make a lucrative profit by spiking the prices of
all varieties of rice including those from Thailand, Vietnam and Egypt.

future value. Front month selling pressure continues to drive differed months lower as the new crop/old crop
spread continues to narrow.

The recent follow-through bearishness is being driven by technical trading as the July future now represents a
deep discount to cash rice values. The question that is now being posed is when will the commercials step in
and stop the bleeding with aggressive buying in an attempt to secure cheap rice to fulfill late season demand?
The other grains closed sharply lower today as they felt the effect of macroeconomic shifts under way in
Europe; soybeans closed about 1.5% lower at $14.6050 per bushel; wheat about 1.4% lower at $6.0675 per
bushel, and corn finished the day about 1.6% lower at $4.4900 per bushel.

U.S. stocks gained on Thursday, with both the Dow and the S&P 500 advancing further into uncharted territory,
after the European Central Bank moved to combat disinflation and investors looked to Friday's employment
report. After weakening against the dollar, the euro held at 1.36 dollars per euro, while the 10-year U.S.
Treasury yield used in figuring mortgage rates and other consumer loans down 2 basis points at 2.58%. Rising
to a record 16,844.71, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was lately up 94.91 points, or 0.6%, at 16,832.44. The

points, or 0.9%, to 4,290.72.

On Wednesday, stocks rose, lifting the S&P 500 into uncharted territory, after a measure of the U.S. services
sector climbed more than expected in May, helping counter another report that had private-sector job creation
failing to live up to expectations. Gold is trading about 0.8% higher, crude oil is seen trading about 0.2% lower,
and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about 0.4% lower at about 1:00pm Chicago time.Wednesday, there were

Climate Change Caused $38 Million Loss to Chinas Rice Sector in 10 Years
Jun 05, 2014

In sharp contrast to nearly all previous studies, Chinese researchers from Peking University, Beijing, and
Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, Chengdu, have found that temperature and solar radiation
have significant impact during both the vegetative and ripening phases of the rice plant. The final results
indicate that climate change caused losses worth $38 million in Chinas rice sector in the last 10 years.Past
research studying the impact of climate change on rice yields have mostly focused on tropical and sub-tropical
regions to conclude that higher daily minimum temperature reduced yield, whereas elevated daily maximum
temperature raised it.

The team found that higher daily minimum temperature increased yield in China during the vegetative phase,
whereas higher daily maximum temperature reduced it during the vegetative and ripening phases. The
researchers used national-level data of irrigated single-season rice and daily weather data to find the first
practical evidence of the impact of climate change on rice yield in China. They found that the impact of solar
radiation was positive during the vegetative phase and negative during the ripening phase.

How will Thai Military Government Control Falling Rice Prices?
Jun 05, 2014
Thailand military government (National Council for Peace and Order - NCPO) is quickly sorting out all the
issues related to the abandoned rice pledging scheme and the next challenge before it is to help increase rice
prices, which have been plummeting since the end of the pledging scheme on February 28, 2014.Wholesale
prices of paddy with 25% moisture content in the domestic market currently stand at 5,400 - 6,000 baht (around
$165- $183) per ton, much below the price of 11,000 - 12,000 baht (around $336 - $367) per ton paid under the
rice-pledging scheme. Trade sources say current prices are not enough to cover production costs of around
7,000 baht (around $214) per ton.Excessive rice sales by the government is one of the reasons that largely
contributed to fall in prices.

Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) suggested that rice exports should be stopped until the end of
this year in order to stop fall in rice prices. The TDRI Academic Head said all the rice stocks should be audited
to find out missing and rotten stocks.Supplies from 2014-15 main crop (to be harvested in October) are likely to
touch around 28 million tons, basis paddy, and could put heavy downward pressure market prices, said the
General Manager (GM) of the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC).

The BAAC GM suggested that stopping rice sales would not be a solution as it would amount to deterioration in
stocks even if it increases prices temporarily. He stated that about 8,000 - 8,500 baht (around $245 - $256) per
ton for 25% moisture paddy; about 9,000 - 10,000 baht (around $275 - $306) per ton for paddy with lower than
25% moisture; about 10,000 baht (around $306) per ton for Thai Hom Mali fragrant rice with high moisture and
about 12,000 baht (around $367) per ton for Thai Hom Mali fragrant rice with low moisture would be ideal in
present conditions.

Meanwhile, the Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA) is hopeful of exporting around 9 million tons of rice
in 2014 and again regaining its world's top exporter crown as Thai rice export prices have become competitive
after the government intervention scheme has ended. The TREA has urged the NCPO to set up an independent
'Rice Board', comprising representatives of farmers, millers, exporters and government agencies, to work
towards sustainable growth of the rice sector in the country.

FAO Estimates 2014 Global Milled Rice Production at 503 Million Tons, Up 1.2%
from Last Year
Jun 05, 2014

Daily Rice E-Newsletter by Rice Plus Magazine www.ricepluss.com
News and R&D Section mujajhid.riceplus@gmail.com Cell # 92 321 369 2874

The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has estimated 2014 global milled rice production at about
503 million tons, up about 1.2% from an estimated 496.9 million tons produced in 2013. The FAO expects
milled rice production to increase in China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar and Oceania countries. It expects a
decline in production in Thailand due to fall in prices, in Sri Lanka due to drought, and in Australia.

The UN agency estimates 2014 world milled rice utilization at 502 million tons, up about 2.4% from about
490.2 million tons in 2013. It expects 417 million tons to be consumed as food with the world per capita
consumption increasing to 57.7 kilograms per year.

The FAO estimates 2015 global milled rice trade at 39 million tons, slightly lower than an estimated 39.3
million tons in 2014. It expects China rice imports to decline due to tightening of border controls and import
license allocations. The FAO also expects exports from India and Pakistan to decline while those of Thailand to
increase during 2015.

The UN agency estimates 2015 global milled rice ending stocks at 182.2 million tons, slightly more than
estimated 180.8 million tons in 2014. It expects Brazil, Cambodia, China, the Philippines, the United States and
Vietnam to increase their stocks, while Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Myanmar, Peru and Tanzania to cut down
their inventories.

IRRI Discusses Lapses in Indonesian Rice Strategy

Jun 05, 2014

The Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) says there are lapses in the rice strategy of
Indonesia, according to local sources.Indonesia is the world's third largest rice producer but it needs to import
rice every year due to increasing consumption and inefficient production techniques, say analysts. In this
context the IRRI said that Indonesia needs to focus on increasing production in line with growing consumption
needs and become self-sufficient in rice production.

The IRRI Director-General told a media briefing that Indonesia needs to adopt a national, but regionally
differentiated strategy to achieve self-sufficiency in rice production. He said Indonesian government needs to
address specific constraints in different regions to increase rice production. He says while some regions have
poor drainage, iron toxicity and high acidity, some other regions have dry climate and water shortage. The IRRI
DG suggested that Indonesia should adopt an integrated approach in selecting appropriate rice varieties,
improving irrigation facilities and framing policies in tune with farmers' needs. He added that the government
should guide farmers to take right decisions involving new rice varieties, tools, seeds, and machinery, based on
their field conditions.

Since rice bears significant weight in Indonesia's food inflation index, analysts view that it should be dealt
strategically. Currently, Indonesia's annual growth in rice production is in the range of 2-3%. But analysts say
growth in Indonesia's rice production should be at least 5% more than the growth in consumption every year to
avoid imports. The government has also been striving to reduce annual rice consumption through various
campaigns such as "one day without rice", and promotion of other high-carbohydrate foods such as sago, corn
and wheat.USDA estimates Indonesia to produce 37.7 million tons of rice in MY 2013-14 (January 2014 -
December 2014), up about 2% from an estimated 36.55 million tons produced last year. It estimates Indonesia
to import 1.5 million tons of rice in 2014, more than double over 650,000 tons imported in 2013. USDA
estimates the country's consumption needs at 38.65 million tons in MY 2013-14.

Myanmar Needs Modernized Mills to Increase High Quality Rice Exports, Says
MRMA
Jun 05, 2014
The Myanmar Rice Millers Association (MRMA) has stressed the need for setting up modernized rice milling
units in the country to be able to increase exports of high quality 5% brokens, according to local sources. The
MRMA noted that Myanmars high quality 5% broken rice (locally known as Tann Myint) has huge demand
from Europe and Japan but local millers lack facilities to meet the demans. They say sophisticated milling units
with rice polishers and colour sorter machines, which can produce high-grade 5% broken rice, are needed to

abreast with the market needs. Currently, there are less than ten high-tech and modernized rice mills that can
produce 100 to 400 tons in the country, according to the MRMA.

Owing to the high cost of producing 5% broken rice, most of the millers have stopped its production. The
MRMA has been demanding government assistance in setting up hi-tech milling units but the government has
been indifferent to the rice millers' demands. The Association says even the 25% broken rice (locally known as
Ae Ma Hta), which is largely exported to Africa, and many other varieties of rice produced in Myanmar do not
get higher prices in foreign markets as they are not polished during the milling process. Also, falling rice prices
and surging electricity charges have forced many small- and medium-sized millers to shut down their
operations, says a former MRMA Chairman.

MRMA data shows that there are about 2,000 regular mills with an average milling capacity between 15 and
100 tons. The Myanmar Agribusiness Public Corporation (MAPC) is constructing new parboiling rice mills with
a combined capacity of 200,000 tons and 300,000 tons of parboiled rice annually. The General Secretary of
MRMA expressed hope that the government takes some initiative to construct a few Tann Myint (5% broken)
mills also in the country. Myanmar government is keen on regaining its once top rice exporter status and
accordingly plans to increase its rice exports to about 3 million tons over the next five years, up almost three
times the current exports of around one million tons. It is also working on a new trade policy and would help
rice exporters gain access to new markets.

However, inadequate funding and government subsidies are discouraging farmers from producing high-quality
rice suitable for international sales, say local sources.USDA estimates Myanmar to export 1.3 million tons of
rice in 2014 (January - December), up 12% from an estimated 1.16 million tons in 2013. The agency estimates
the country to produce 12 million tons of rice in the MY 2013-14, up about 2% from an estimated 11.7 million
tons in the MY 2012-13.

Indian government's rice procurement in the
ongoing 2013-14 Kharif Marketing Season (KMS),
October 2013 - September 2014, has reached
around 28.64 million tons as of June 2, 2014,
according to the country's Ministry of Consumer
Affairs, Food and Distribution. Top contributors to
the Central pool so far are the northern states of
Punjab with 8.1 million tons, Andhra Pradesh with
6.181 million tons and Chhattisgarh with 4.285
million tons. Local sources say rice procurement
by the government agencies Food Corporation of
India (FCI) and State agencies in the current KMS
may fall short of the targeted 34.3 million tons
(31.1 million tons of rice from the Kharif crop and
3.2 million tons from the rabi crop) due to sluggish
paddy arrivals, especially from the states of Andhra
Pradesh and Orissa, where paddy production was badly affected by cyclones and excess rainfall. In the KMS
2012-13, the government agencies procured about 34 million tons of rice against the targeted 34.5 million tons.

According to the third advance estimates by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics under the Ministry of
Agriculture, rice production in the current marketing year 2013-14 (October 2013 - September 2014) is
projected at around 106.29 million tons, up about 1% from around 105.24 million tons in the previous year.
